Re: Craigslist

2005-06-18 Thread David Rodriguez

Doc,

I for one have done a lot of buying and selling on Craigslist. When I
once came into a deal on about 50 new laptop drives, I sold about half
of them on CL San Francisco, another quarter to CL LA Portland. The
rest went on the swap list. I've never been taken once on those or
many of the other sales. HOWEVER... I've come close a few times.

As far as selling goes, one of the biggest scams comes from those who
have a client who wants one or more of your items. They say they will
pay up front with Cashiers Check or even Money Order and will provide
payment at time of pickup. The written english is often broken. If
selling, stay away.

As for buying, most sellers are ok. There were a few buyers who had
normal apprehension about buying from me so I provided them with a few
referrals in say the Bay Area who had also just bought and received one
of the drives. This is one method to protect yourself. Ask if he has
any referrals. Also read down the column because if there are any
repetitive scammers, the other users will often point them out.

Make sure that you purchase, make sure to request some form of tracking
number. It protects both sides and nobody can say must have gotten
'lost' in the mail.

Finally, read the Paypal 'Buyers Protection' section. They give some
good insights and means to protect you. Of course the average seller
is as apprehensive about you as you are of them. Of course Face to
Face exchanges are best but understandably difficult in Western
Montana. Overall, CL is a great service.

Just a few thoughts.

Got my Lombard on CL, although a local buy.

Does anybody know the rules for sending a computer to another
country? Can
you do it? What are the laws keeping one from doing so? What can be
sent and

to what country?

If you send the computer by national post (USPS, Post Canada, etcetera)
and fill out the appropriate customs declaration completely, you will
have no problem.

A bit to add. If you use USPS, they have a thick book behind the
counter which lists customs regs for each and every country around the
world. It specifically lays out what can and cannot be sent to the
country in question. The easiest way is just to drop by there and with
your question. You don't want to send something and end up having it
opened by customs and never seen again.

I just searched the USPS web site and they have a page that has some
limited information. You still want to rely on the detailed regs at the
Post Office.

Re: Fussy DVD drive on Lombard

2005-06-14 Thread David Rodriguez

Ben,

I've got a Lombard as well and do have problems with certain dvd
copies, but not all. I think part of the problem is that DVD
technology has evolved and the old drive hasn't. So old drives have
trouble reading certain media. Are any of your disks DVD+? I suppose
this could cause issues too.

You might also gently blow air using canned air onto the eye. All it
takes is a microscopic dust bunny to cause problems. Make sure it
doesn't blow liquid oxygen onto the eye as some 'new' cans will. Your
drive may have a shared eye or use separate eyes for cd and dvd.

Dave

But several won't mount, just get stuck in an endless loop with the
drive going 'whr -CLICK, whiiir-CLICK' and never mounting it.

Or do you think this particular drive is on the way out, and a new
  one might fix the issue?

Lombard EIEE Target Disk Mode?

No, and you never will, since it's a rom issue, not the mere presence
of a FW port.

Bruce Johnson

Is that the Rom on the Lombard or with the Cardbus itself? If it's the
Lombard, it still wouldn't explain why with the Lombard running at
normal mode, it won't see my desktop in Target Disk Mode being the
desktop is emulating a drive. Dave

Lombard Questions

2005-05-29 Thread David Rodriguez

Morning all,

Been a long while since I've posted here. I just picked up a Lombard
the other day, of course it has problems but it's got enough good
things going to make it worth resurrecting. Good screen, dvd/rom w/
decoder, fair battery, a 256 mb chip. It's got a new 20 gig drive
installed w/ 9.2.2.

The bad side, the motherboard was dead and no power supply. I've
borrowed a friend's failing L2 Cache G3 400 mobo for the weekend and
power supply, which is allowing me to play around with getting it set
up. But I'll eventually need to find replacements for both. It has a
256 and 64 mb Ram but hope to find another 256 of the right type that
will give me 512.

Problem: Will not restart. I can shut down and then start up, but
cannot simply Restart. Trying to do so requires use of the reset
button. Would this be indicative of a low pram batter, a bad L2
Cache, or something else? With the inability to restart, I am having a
little trouble installing Jaguar too. I plan on moving up to Panther
and eventually using the firewire enclosure method to install Tiger,
but first things first.

I guess I'm also curious if anybody has been using a failing L2 cache
mobo long term? If so, how's that working out?

Other Question: Any guidance is appreciated in the search for the
appropriate type of low profile 256 Mb Ram Stick that will allow full
512 ram.

Thanks for any ideas,

Dave
Oregon
