2005-06-12 Thread Dennis Descoteau
My son has all the luck. He had a 'book given to him. However it has two
problems. Some one 'sat' on it and the screen shattered. The previous
owner changed out the screen with a retrofit screen which he says was an
alternate screen. Evidently this fellow is somewhat of a Mac guy. But
the screen does not work. The 'book does work with an external monitor
tho. Is there anything that I should look for to get the screen working?
The other problem is that the battery doesn't work. Is there a way to
check the battery and/or the charging system? I don't have access to the
'book and therefore can't assist him with the troubleshooting.

It is a 667 mhz model. I had trouble finding the name but it is an Onyx.
TIA, Dennis

Re: The Saga of the Powerbook 3400c

2004-12-21 Thread Dennis Descoteau
On 21-Dec-04, at 10:15 PM, Nathan Hill wrote:
Hello everyone (and dad),
I am in the middle of a spiritual service program up here in DC,
working at the Capital Area Food Bank. Before I came up, I decided to
get a decent older Powerbook to write and do some web design and
graphic design. I picked up two Powerbook 3400c(s) on a fluke on eBay
(I thought the first seller wasn't going to send me the 'book, but I
ended up with both).
Unfortunately, the 'Book I took with me started acting crazy. It
wouldn't boot up, and if so, it would only do so randomly. I pulled
out the 128 MB chip of ram, and it seemed to work fine (although slow)
with virtual memory. But the 'Book just stopped working completely --
it was giving me the GLOD and Whine of Doom and what not. I got the
backup 'Book from my dad, bought new RAM, and put everything together
-- and again, it worked fine for a while, but started freaking out
again.
So here I am right now.
I took the backup Powerbook, switched the hard drive from the other
dead Powerbook, reinstalled the new RAM, and reset the PRAM. It sort
of works. However, the 3400 still freezes randomly. It now boots up on
demand, but if I let it just sit, the whole 'Book freezes. I don't
know what to do.
So:
1) It could be a system conflict, right? Does anyone know any specific
system extensions that cause problems? I know I have had issues with
the PCI Audio Extension and Powerbook G3s before. Anyone know any
other extensions that might conflict with a 3400c?
2) Could there still be a hardware conflict somewhere? I know from my
general tech support stuff -- a dead on freeze (no cursor movement
even) -- means an overheating or major hardware conflict of some kind.
Anyone have any ideas?
BTW, if you seek some info on fighting back against the GLOD, I
recommend the following link. Run through the same procedures for
3400s as for 2400s. I've had success doing so.
http://pbreadme.nexuswebs.net/pb2400.html
Let me know.
Thanks,
Nathan Hill
Nathan, I had the freezies when running 9.2.2 and had to switch to 9.1.
Haven't had time to try a re-install and troubleshooting.
Good luck, Dennis

Thanks, Dennis
The way you do it is to download the third-party utility called
OS9Helper at www.os9forever.com.

Bear in mind that it doesn't seem to work perfectly for everybody. It
didn't for me. I don't run OS 9.2.2 on my 3400c. What I do is run 9.1,
with the Finder, OT and TCP/IP components from 9.2.2 in place of their
9.1 versions. For whatever reason, that combination works for me and
is faster than stock 9.1.

I'm planning to try 9.2.2 again at some future date, having recently
replaced my 3400c's logic board due to sleeping sickness. I replaced
my board with a new, Apple Service 3400/180 board, and overclocked the
bus speed to 44 MHz so that I now have a 3400/198 that benches
reasonably close to a stock 3400/240.

Yes, it would. OS 9 runs well on a 3400/180, so a Wallstreet wouldn't
have much problem.

OS 8.6 would be the fastest, if you don't need the added features of
OS 9. You can run up to 10.2.8 on that machine, but don't even think
about it if you have the cacheless 233 MHz version. It would be
sluggish even on the Series 2 Wallstreet 233.

did was to notice that if I only booted to the desktop it would
shutdown from the 'special' menu. By not shutting down I mean that it
freezes at the desktop, the cursor moves but the dropdowns don't work.
If I force quit and re-boot to the desktop, I can shut down. Any
thoughts on this? Thanks, Dennis
Are you sure it is just not taking a very long time to shut down? That
is
what happens w/ my 3400c/180 w/ OS 9.1... sometimes as long as a
minute(!).

Re: 3400 won't shut down with 9.2.2

2004-11-12 Thread Dennis Descoteau
My built-in ethernet works good. I tried adding the OS9 Firewire and
modem extensions but they were already loaded so I went over top of
them just in case. Still no dice. 9.1 looks better all the time.
Thanks for the help, Dennis

Among other considerations, the PowerBook 3400c does not support Mac
OS 9.2.x, even though some folks manage to install such with patches.

Hi,
No expert here, but I did have a PB that did a similar thing with 9.1
I eventually went to the system folder/preferences and took the
system preference and the finder preference and put them in the trash
without emptying it, and then restarted. The machine ran fine and I
emptied the trash. Maybe this will help.
