Re: Powerbook 1400 back up batteries.

2003-10-21 Thread Garry Hamblin
I would be most interested in any reply to this as I have exactly the
same problem. I had the PRAM battery replaced which did not fix it.
On Tuesday, October 21, 2003, at 06:05 PM, Kenneth Vann wrote:

Hello all. I have a question for the expierence powerbook repair
persons on
this list.

I have a Powerbook 1400 with the following problem: When in sleep mode,
with out ac adaptor pluged in, if I change the main battery, the
blinking
led light will go dim. When a fresh main battery is reinstalled, the
led
lignt returns to full brightness but the powerbook will not wake up
from
sleep.

Please note: the computer does not lose date, time or mouse settings.

The owners manual said I should be able to change main batteries when
in
sleep mode.

A service tech friend said that with 6 years of age on the backup
battery,
I should change it to start with. Sounds relible to me.

I want to replace the backup battery. A dealer looked it up and said I
need
one part number 922-2429 backup battery. Now as I get ready to
install, I
find there are two batteries. One under the left palm rest, identified
as
922-2429, one under the right palm rest, part number unknown.

The copy of the apple service pdf I have for the Powerbook 1400 shows
the
battery under the left palm rest, but not the one under the right palm
rest. If you have a Powerbook 1400, you can see the batteries if you
remove
the main battery and the floppy drive. They are attachet to the
underside
of the upper case.

I found a tech note on apple web site that list two part numbers for
Powerbook 1400 batteries. Tech note #11751. System battery 922-2420,
Backup
battery 922-2429.

In another tech note #16168, I find a battery listed by service part
number
922-3078, also known as M4507 & M4915 I think that this is the main
9.6v
Nimh battery.

So now I am totaly confused. I did a Goole search for 922-2420 and
come up
with a reference for a 9v Nimh battery at a third party battery
company.

Are the batteries under the palm rest both the same? Are they both
922-2429?

Thanks for all you help.

Good resource to know about but my local Apple dealer quoted me $32.00

Re: 1400- battery rebuild

2003-01-30 Thread Garry Hamblin
I had mine rebuilt by a local outfit called "Battery Boys" here in
Saskatoon. Cost me $125.00 CDN I think. The results were comparable to
buying a new one which was over $200.00. The 1400 battery is a Nicad I
believe so I was told it was just a matter of replacing the battery
cells. The replacement of the batteries includes some specialized spot
welding which precludes you taking a kitchen knife and prying open the
battery enclosure and doing it yourself. Evidently the Li-on
batteries which later PowerBooks use cannot be rebuilt. According to
them anyway.

Re: Best OS for a 5300cs

2003-01-19 Thread Garry Hamblin
I run 9.1 on my 1400/166 64M ram, and it is seriously slow. Like OS 8.1
on an LC475 slow. I appreciate the features though so I keep it as the
OS on this machine. I have tried 7.53 and 8.1 as well and the best
compromise between performance and stability seemed to be OS 8.1. Don't
have a copy of 8.5/8.6 to test, but it would be interesting to do so.
One of these days I will run across a deal on a Sonnet 466 and then all
will be right with the world.

PowerBook 1400 Farallon Ethermac Installer problems

2002-09-28 Thread Garry Hamblin

Hi, hope someone out there can help me with this. I have the Farallon
595 [not 595a] card with a PowerBook 1400 running OS 9.1 and can't get
the installer to work. When running the installer, I keep getting the
message 'Insert PC Card Installer 2.2 disk'. I am using a floppy disk
labelled as such with the OS installer as downloaded from Farallon's
site. I have tried running the installer from a CD, a floppy, and the
hard drive. Same message. When I insert the floppy disk with the drivers
on it, I get the message that the disk is labelled PC Card Installer 2.2
but is not the correct disk, and then.. Please insert a disk
labelled PC Card Installer 2.2. What am I doing wrong? Or how can I
install the pieces of the software manually? Hope someone out there has
run into this.
