There is some info on iTunes with Mac OS 8.6

 3. I would like to put iTunes on. The readily available v. 2.0.4 is not
compatible with OS 8.6. Someone mentioned v. 1.x. Where can I get it?

I usually just get a soft piece of paper towel and dab one end with a
little windex and wipe it off, works on my 1400, then it dries without
need to wipe again. As for getting into corners like what I'm
guessing you want to do, I'm not so sure there.

Re: 1400 Sleep Light on solid, but computer off -- Help!!

2006-01-22 Thread Noah Wood
Press the small button on the back in between the ADB and Serial ports
until it shuts off. This is usually a PRAM error. Then your PB
should turn on just fine

 Hi all:

I have lurked for a while and I am happy for all the information I have
gleaned from this list. Unfortunately I now have a problem.

I was using my 1400c/166 while I was on vacation last week. When I was
finished using it for the last time, I shut it down and placed it into my
carrying case (vertically). I just happened to be in the bag for something
else and I noticed that the sleep indicator light was on solid (not flashing).

I can't remember if this light is on solid when I am using the computer. The
screen is black. I first tried pressing the return key, nothing. Next I
attempted to turn on the computer by pressing on/off, nothing. Finally, I
attempted to restart the computer by pressing ctrlcommandon/off,
nothing. I plugged in the computer, thinking that there may not be enough
juice in the computer to turn on or restart. I repeated the above steps, and
 nothing.

This has never happened to me, but you are all so smart that I know someone
out there knows what the problem is. I suspect it is a simple problem and an
equally simple fix. I really need to get some files off this computer, so I
appreciate all your sage advice :-)

Thanks ahead of time to any replies,

1400 Mac OS 9

2006-01-16 Thread Noah Wood
Hello, and first off I would like to announce my re-subscription to
this mailing list. I left as my 1400 died but after about 4 months I
used it and it started to work. Now I have the urge to upgrade my
1400 to Mac OS 9. At the moment I have Mac OS 8.6 and it runs
smoothly and I like it, but I like some of the features of Mac OS 9.
So please give me your thoughts!

Insert a Floppy Disk into the 145 and format it by clicking and
holding on the special menu and going to erase Disk when the floppy is

you need some software, please then email Me off-list.

introduced in version 7.2 of the Powerbook control panel, which came
with the System 3 update of 7.1.

Now, I'd prefer to not upgrade the OS on my Powerbook, so does anyone
have this version of the Powerbook control panel (or maybe even a
slightly later verson) that they'd be willing to e-mail to me? I'm not
sure that it'll work on System 7.0.1, but I thought I'd give it a try.

 Thanks!

Re: how to prep 1400cs for sale

2005-09-24 Thread Noah Wood
First off use the SCSI connection to re-format the PB Hard Drive and
then re-install 9.1 Because 9.1 is such a new system, it should get
some good money on the net. Look around for a Pawnshop in your area
if you don't want eBay, but eBay is a great way to get some good
money, if you haven't used eBay before, the buyer pays shipping.

 to change the absolute minimum.

Currently running 9.0 - have the CD (it doesn't have a
CD drive - I use a SCSI connection to my PowerMac.) I
also have the original disks shipped with the PB. I
believe there are even a few folders on the HD holding
the intermediary OS files, that say things like OS8
System Folder. Is there a utility already available
which can clean this up? FYI I don't have a connection
from the macs to the internet.

 - I will post this for sale (and other items) on the
LEM-swap list; can anyone suggest other likely places
I could post, especially that might include the
Boston, MA, area? I would prefer to sell to someone
local (New England) and not to get onto ebay, but
please let me know if ebay really is a good idea
 anyway.

FYI I'm posting a similar request on the PCI PowerMacs
 list.

 Thanks.

Events like that are rarely inconsequential to the system.

Re: TCP/IP Unaccessable

2005-09-19 Thread Noah Wood
I will try to fix this, but I know it cannot be the logic board,
because the sound was from the PC card slot, without the car in the
slot the machine runs wonderfully! I just can't understand what
caused this.

On 9/19/05, Bruce Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Unplug your PB, take the battery out, then use something to gently
wedge open the pcmcia slot doors; then shine a penlight into the
opening. You should be able to see if the pins are bent over. If they
are I'd disassemble the Powerbook, then gently straighten them with a
pair of fine needle nose pliers or fine-tip hemostats.

It's not a job for the twitchy or non-dextrous, but it is doable.
Something like this http://tinyurl.com/7kbsk helps a great deal,
and adds that Rick Moranis-like total geek chic to your wardrobe ;-)

The bad news is that if THAT was why you got the crackling noise and
smoke smell from the PB, something on the logic board was doing the
 crackling and smelling.

Re: Replacing PB 190 internal batt and Power Manager

I would say look on eBay or Amazon, they may have the battery or even

it's the Power Manager all messed up. I already know how to go inside
my PB 190 and remove the internal battery. I'd like to know of any
cheap internal battery replacement sources since it seems Radio Shack
doesn't carry them. I'd also like to ask could removing and
reattaching the flakey power plug itself affect and scramble the
Power Manager? If so, just what is it about the power socket that's
causing the problem? The socket unit isn't properly seated on the
motherboard or what? I'm game to go inside and fix it if I had a good
 idea what to fix.

 Thanks!

Re: 1400 W/ FLASH DRIVE!

2005-09-06 Thread Noah Wood
Compact Flash would be great for another Hard Drive but at this
point a waste of money if you ask me. If you use the Memory stick as
a RAM Disk and get them system to at least 32MB of Real RAM It would
be fast enough. CF is a little faster, but much more expensive.

step before upgrading the cpu. The HDD! I know that i
can boot 7.6.1 off of a sony mem stick and use if for
virtual memory and internet cache but should i use
it for everyday use. I think( and if someone could
help with this part) that CF cards are faster than
sony mem sticks. If so then i could use one of the
2gig cards to hold everything for me.

Re: slow browser performance

After my tests Internet Explorer 5.5 runs the fastest, however with
your older Computer you will not be able to get any browser fast
enough, In my opinion you would upgrade to Mac OS 8.1 or 8.6

little dissapointed to see how slow the web browsers run. I know this is not
related to my connection speed as when I download a file it just flies!
I have tried appropriate versions of Netscape, Internet Explorer and Icab
but it still crawls! I obviously dont expect this Powerbook to run as fast
as a modern Computer but a little more speed would be nice.
 Has anyone got any suggestions?

Re: Keyboard layout

Why ask this question, you fixed the Keyboard problem, why ask the

you just use the Italian Installer?!!?

 US system.

It works and now from the Keyboard control panel I can choose from
 Italian and US.

Is there a more straightforward way (e.g. via an installer) to add
more keyboard layouts without using ResEdit?

wake up without more problems more often?

On 8/30/05, Doc Holliday [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
You are stepping on the system heap when you restart, which causes the
system to crash. This is common with PowerBooks. They use a lot of
real memory when they wake up. Both my 3400c's and my 1400c do this.
This was, also, pretty common with older Macs that had smaller amounts
of RAM. I am unaware of a specific fix for this in 1400's. Putting
more RAM in the machine would help, but the max RAM of the 1400 really
isn't high enough, in my experience, to entirely eliminate this.

I never shut off my 1400, ever. But, I never put it to sleep running
more than one small app and I am running an absolute basic system with
very few extensions, (8.6). That has, effectively, eliminated the
crashing on wake up with it. Not really practical if you use it for
anything. I do shut off my 3400c's, but when I do put them to sleep,
 they frequently crash...

I have a 15-inch Powerbook G4 1.25GHz running the latest version of Tiger
(10.4.2). I am looking at options for a Bluetooth headset. I found one
 option, a Plantronics M2500.

I tested this unit in store with one of the most current G5 iMacs. I paired
this headset with this computer and it worked flawlessly. I also tried it on
one of the current 15-inch Powerbooks and it too worked flawlessly.

I took the headset home and tried setting it up with my Powerbook. The
Powerbook saw the headset, but when I tried to continue with the setup
process a message popped up. It stated the following:

Failed to set up the headset. Headsets are not supported on your Bluetooth
 hardware.

I checked my Powerbook's Apple System Profiler and it shows that the
software version of Bluetooth is 1.60f2 and the firmware version is 1.526.
According to Apple's own information, this headset should work. The minimum
requirements for supporting Bluetooth headset devices are: software version
1.5 or later and firmware version 1.02.

I also tried setting up the M2500 headset with my old Power Mac G4 (which is
running OS 10.4.2) which has been retrofitted with a D-Link Bluetooth USB
adapter, DBT-120. The setup proceeded without a hitch. I was able to
configure and use this headset with Skype.

If I want to use this headset with my Powerbook, will I need to install a
D-Link Bluetooth USB adapter to do it? Or is there a firmware upgrade which
will make this unit work with my Powerbook?

 Roland :)

1400 PC-Card Slot Busted

2005-08-20 Thread Noah Wood
Hello fellow Power Bookers! I have a little problem, my 1400's top
PC-Card slot broke when I force-ejected a card from it. I opened up
the keyboard and took a look, and it seems on the edge close to the
Hard Drive there is a piece of the metal that keeps the card in place
jammed into one of the prongs and it is bent, this is fixable in the
short run? I tried to take a small screwdriver and bend it back but
that didn't help.

Re: 1400 question

2005-07-11 Thread Noah Wood
I get thia too on OS 8.6, the screen stayes grey with the pointer
there and the HD is spinning however I do not know what this means,
your best bet is to make sure not to have any programs running (except
the Finder and some programs that take up little memory) becasue to
wake up from sleep mode it takes a lot of memory.

My little Mac seems to have a slight quirk.
When ever it goes to sleep mode automatically it sometimes crashes
 1400cs running 8.1

The first time this happened I wasn't quite sure what to think.. No blue
screen of death, it almost looked like some application was running... but
after further review it did mention if you got here from a crash or

So I could just reset the power management to not go to sleep mode.

But what causes this? and how can I fix it?

Re: ROM chips

2005-06-27 Thread Noah Wood
Yes, 8.1 and 8.6 are great for the 1400, although it can run OS 9 it
is not recomended and startup is very slow. to get the effect of the
second mouse button in OS 8 press ctrl+click and a menu will come up,
and with the Mac there are mahy third-party apps you can install to
customize the menu. Working with mac comes easy after a while, trust
me I was a mac newbie two months ago now I can do it all!

Something I've noticed even without power; the keyboard is full-size and
 seems rather comfortable to use.

Don'tthink so without a secondary app. There is one but the name
escapes me. OSx works for one way communication from a Mac to windows
but not the other way around (not for me anyway). Anything older is
doubtful on a network, and probably will be corrected. The PB1400 should
work fine on the net with a wireless router though.

This is a test also, as one of my replies this weekend got bounced due to :

It is composed using the 'windows-1252' character set,

When a Mac does not have an OS installed on boot you will see a floppy
disk with a ? flashing on it instead of the happy mac icon.
Everyone else seemed to answer the ROM questions so I wont cover that.
One button is all you need as some said already, but on Mac OS 8 and
up you get introduced to Contextual menus which is much like the
Second mouse button on that other OS Most of the time these
functions can be reached by clicking menus or simple with the Command

the keys are great. I took two pictures. . .

If you are considering a Power Book for keyboard I would go with the

It is up to you.

On 5/7/05, Dan Palka [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

usually stick with the lower OS versions if possible. If you have OS
8.1 or below, Speed Doubler 8 is a great help with the 68k emulation.

I highly doubt anything you're doing with a 1400 requires OS 9 in any
way. So why install it? It just takes up more HD space, more RAM, and
 runs slow.

I agree, My brother has an old 3.1 laptop and you know a 190 is a lot
better, I mean think about it, Simple Text can talk to you (if
Text-To-Speech is installed) and Microsoft Word 2002 can't even do
that!

Hey, don't laugh at the 190 users. I still use my old 190 daily, and I
don't even have the colour screen. Really, in all honesty, you do need
at least a 603 or a G3 to do serious work, but the 68K macs are great
machines for text editing. My words of wisdom, John, if you can afford
something with a 603 or an early G3, get one. If not, stick with the
 190. After all, the worst mac beats the best Wintel box, right?

 CSC

P.S. Yes, Fluxstringer, I also use my 190 for serious work.

Now I'm going to have to open my 1400c and look inside.
I went on-line tonight for the first time with my 1400 via my wife's

Things take a long time to load, but that is probably just AOL and the

 Hi Noah,

Go to Mad Dog's site. They have some links.

I also went to the 1400 FAQ site and downloaded the PDF version for
 $3.00.
They have detailed photographs for 1400 disassembly.

Don't get your hopes up too high. Todays web pages are rather intensive to

Re: Better Performance on PB 1400

2005-05-03 Thread Noah Wood
I use it to type up some work (as ClarisWorks is installed and I even
like Simple Text) and play a few games. I got it on eBay a while ago
the cs so the screen isn't as good, but was priced good. I really am
aiming up to get a G3 or if I am lucky a G4. I always liked the
Pismo, but maybe I should ask around some more.

On 5/3/05, Rick McCutcheon [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
Well, as someone just said, don't get your expectations to high.
I'm a long-time PB1400 fan (still have 2 of them, one since 98 or so),
and I've never, even with a brand new battery, got 3 full hours of
actual run time (others may have). I have managed it with sleep
time, etc. And even if you did, within several months your new battery
would no longer be new. Two hours is very doable, and maybe with a
carefully managed set-up three might be possible for a few months
while the battery is still brand new (assuming you have the upgraded
 processor that eats less power)

I would be sorry to see your hopes dashed It's a fabulous computer
(well worth applause) that I still use occasionally, although for a
host of reasons I've recently had to move to a slightly newer Book for
most of my official work. And I don't mean this as a downer, just a
reality check so you don't end up going to a psych as a result of
computer related depression Battery life was the only criticism I
had of the 1400, but it and the technology of its time, were fabulous
 -- even with the limitations.

The keyboard, btw, remains to my mind the very best EVER made for a
laptop by Apple, bar none (let the flame wars begin :-).

It's just my experience -- others will have their own to add. I too
love the 1400 and have raved about it on many occasions (and suggested
long ago on this list that it was better than many that followed it,
only to be battered in flame wars... although not fully beaten).

 Fellow PowerBook-philes and Mr. Wood,

I think I came in near the end of this discussion, but have you, Mr.
Wood, tried the CompactFlash route to improve speed and battery life?

I am currently trying it out and it seems promising.

Do a search on google (or LowEndMac.com) for powerbook 1400 flash
memory and you should see an article on LowEndMac about using Flash
cards both as bootable harddrives and as virtual memory.

Given that a 1-gig Compact Flash card is only about $60 at
ZipZoomFly.com and I was able to get working CompactFlash reader cards
for about $10 on E-Bay, not a bad way to boost battery life and speed.

Just a thought. So far I am liking it.

 Sincerely,
 Pacer the Loon
