Re: Powerbook 3400 Problem

Hello,
Have you tried re-seating the ram card? I have found them a bit fickle.

shut off.

I slid the battery back in, and then tried to power up again and
nothing happened. SO, I plugged it into the AC adapter, and boom,
it powered up instantly - without pressing anything. All is well,
except now, when it boots up it says that there was a memory test
error, then followed by a warning that there isn't enough memory to
install my extensions and is booting up without them. Worse of
all, when I now go to About the Computer I have suddenly dropped
from what used to be 144mb of physical RAM to the original 16mb!

Have I somehow fried the memory in this thing? Is there any hope?

Re: Good luck, and questions on NuPowr upgrade

2005-11-19 Thread Sims David

Hello,

When I installed a NuPowr upgrade, there was one file. You run the
install program with the old CPU installed, shut down, install the
new CPU and reboot. Very simple. Installing the CPU is as simple as
installing RAM.

The installer I used was the NUpowr 3 v1.0.0 installer. Unstuffed, it
is 336 KB. The Sit file was 224 KB. Do you have this one?

I love First (and Third) Saturdays!

For those of you not in the Dallas, TX area and unfamiliar with 1st
and 3rd Saturday, there is a computer and electronics flea market
every first and third Saturday of the month, in downtown Dallas.
Third Saturday is usually far and away the smaller of the two. I
had some things I needed to look for, so I headed down there this
morning.

One of the unexpected treasures I got was a PowerBook 1400C. Sold
as is, this was about the fifth 1400C I've gotten there. Average
price is about $10 - $20 or so for them. Every one I've bought has
been 'as-is', and every single one has worked. I got this one for
$10 when I saw it had a CD-ROM drive. I have one PB1400 that I
consider my 'main' machine, and one backup. I only have one CD-ROM
between the two of them, so the machine looked like a good gamble,
if just to salvage the CD-ROM.

And was it ever! When I plugged in the machine I got today, it
turns on, but won't boot because the hard drive apparently has no
OS. It brings up the disk/? icon.

My backup 1400 only has a 24 MB upgrade for a 40 MB total. When I
opened the new machine, I was delighted to see it has 2 24 MB
stacks, so I can cannibalize this to upgrade my backup 1400. But
there was BETTER news.

The processor is not stock. It's a NuPowr G3! So, lessee,
discounting the working machine itself, I got 48 MB in RAM
upgrades, a NuPowr G3, and a CD-ROM drive, for $10! I'm going to
consider this a good day!

Now that I'm done with the insufferable gloating, here comes the
plea for help. I've gone to Other World Computing and downloaded
the NuPowr files, but I have no clue of the process/procedure for
doing the upgrade (other than I do know how to physically swap out
the CPU's). I have the 3 downloaded files on the hard drive of the
'main' 1400, which will now get the NuPowr. Do I have to copy these
files to a floppy? They're SIT's, do I need to unstuff 'em first?
At what point do I replace the CPU? Do I install the SIT files
first, or the CPU, or does it really matter?

If anyone can provide a step-by-step, I'd be most appreciative.
I've heard the process is pretty simple, but that doesn't mean I
can intuit it out of nowhere, and I want to be sure not to break/
ruin anything.

Thanks for any help!

Richard (Winfidel)

BTW, How well will OS 9 run on the 1400 with 64 MB RAM and the G3
processor? I'm now on 8.5, but might consider upgrading. What are
the main real advantages of OS 9?

Thanks!

RA

Greetings. Thanks to the persons who sent me an image of iTunes

error type 9 and 11 messages. I increased the memory to iTunes. No
help. I can find any contemporary support for the patch. Any
suggestions?

Thanks,

Hello,
Did the patch have the information about requiring a minimum version
of Quicktime? If my memory serves me, you are required to have a
certain version of quicktime for itunes to work in 8.6.

Re: Best bw laser printer for 3400c running OS 8.6

2005-09-09 Thread Sims David

Hello,

Get a PLW 320. It will connect to the printer port on your 3400C, and
can also be used by computers with an ethernet port by using an apple
talk/ethernet adapter. I have picked a couple of low page count units
from ebay for less than $10. Just be sure to have the sender remover
the toner cartridge and wrap it separately, so toner does not leak
through the unit in transit.

What is your opinion regarding the coolest, affordable, and
so-called best black white laser printer to be connected to a

8.6 ?? My needs are basically text documents and black white
graphics (no need for the best resolution or dpi). Please
consider in your
opinion(s) cost of printer today, availability, and needed (could
be rare)

drivers.

I looked in my Chooser and the icon for the Apple Laserwriter 300
caught my eye. It looks cool but is it really and realistically
cool when connected to my 3400c?

Yes, I would like to get a bw laserprinter for my 3400c and perhaps I
feel guilty about going to eBay for it.
