Just wondering if the 3400c, and 1400c for that matter, will take the
same size hard drives out of the lombards and pismos?
Thanks

Re: Which PowerBook is for me?

2006-01-03 Thread Tom W.
I agree with Caleb 100 per cent. A Lombard, for the price, is a great
laptop. I love the 4-5 hours on a battery as well as the speed and I love
how easy it is to upgrade compared to the ibook. It's a little more than
the first poster wanted to pay, but I got mine for $150US for a basic
configuration. They seem to go from $150 to $250 depending on
configuration. Maybe if you wait, you can get an even better deal.

Yeah, spend the $50 on cheap drugs or perhaps a balaclava.
Seriously, I have a Lombard that I got for $150, and I love it. I
would recommend it over a wallstreet because it's much lighter,
faster, has usb and scsi. A good battery lasts about four hours in
mine.
In your price range, you might get a duo with a working battery, but
not much else.
Like Shawn said, good luck!

Re: DHCP on System 7 - Bruce?

2004-09-27 Thread Tom W.
Bruce, oh guru, perhaps you could shed a little more light on this. I
have a mac/windoze network hooked to the net through a router.
I am trying to add a powerbook 520. I tried with system 7.53. I couldn't
get it to either talk to my os x computers on the network or the net.
Although I could see the OS X computers in the chooser, it wouldn't let
me access them telling me they were using a PAP that system 7.53 didn't
recognize. I then upgraded the pb520 to os 8.1 and set appletalk to
ethernet and tcp/ip to dhcp. Using netscape 3, but still won't access
the net, giving me a socket error or something like that. I can access
appletalk now with 8.1. The PB520 is plugged directly into one of the
ports of the router.
Any ideas on what sendings, both to communicate to the OS X puters and
access the net?
Thanks for any help
Tom

Re: 1/2 OT: watch out seller _ follow up

2004-09-20 Thread Tom W.
Feedback is something that you "may" leave on ebay. You don't have to,
and there are no obligations as to when it should be left. Therefore,
nobody "has" to leave it at any certain point.

Many sellers leave positive feedback as soon as the buyer pays. Others
leave it after shipping the item.

The majority that I deal with, including myself, leave positive feedback
after the buyer does. My reasons are as follows:

1. When buyer leaves positive feedback, that, in my opinion, is the
sign of a successful transaction. He or she has received the item. It
is satisfactory to them, and the positive feedback they leave is their
expression of satisfaction.

2. Waiting until the buyer leaves feedback usually prevents "flaky"
feedback. This may take place when everything was fine, but the buyer
didn't like something about the transaction. Suppose you mail the
product the day you receive payment, but due to some glitch in the
postal system, it is delayed beyond a reasonable amount. If you, the
seller, have already left pos. feedback, the buyer is then free to leave
neg. feedback to vent his/her frustration, even though the postal delay
was not in your control. Is that fair?

3. If a buyer pays in a timely manner, there is very little chance that
a seller would ever leave them neg. feedback. However, if you, the
seller, leave feedack first, you have no way of discouraging buyers from
leaving neg. feedback just because they want to. If a buyer leaves me
neg. feedback, I do the same for them. The only execption would be is if
I made some horrible screw-up that was completely my fault.

4. As a buyer, I don't mind leaving positive feedback first, after
receiving the item, because I know that I have received the item, it is
okay, and the seller has no reason not to leave positive feedback after
receiving mine.

So in conclusion, no, I don't believe sellers should be forced to give
positive feedback after payment is made. IMHO, this would put an unfair
leverage into the hands of unscrupulous buyers.

Just my two cents.
Tom

Beniamino Cenci Goga wrote:
shouldn't the seller leave the feedback ASA buyer pays?

Re: apple

2004-01-05 Thread Tom W.
I respect your opinion but disagree. Apple should be responsible, and it
is up to "Apple" to go after ATI, not individual consumers.. Suppose the
logic board problem is caused by some chip maker in Taiwan (or in this
case, Canada). Do you not think it is Apple's responsibility to make
sure they are purchasing good components and installing them into the
equipment their name and logo is branded onto? Of course it is.I didn't
see anything about ATI on that website, so whose name is being sullied?
Apple's, of course.
I didn't find anything wrong with Junior's post, and the link. Wow, can
we only talk about the good things about powerbooks on this group?
I put two 5300s through REA and have been happy, but I imagine if I had
invested into an Ibook and then it died weeks after the warranty ended,
I would be P.O'd too.

According to an REA service manual I have, your computer doesn't have to
exhibit, all or any, symptoms. Your machine just has to be in the
appropriate serial number range. I would say your dealer may just not want
to deal with it, but you should be able to force the issue, if your machine
qualifies.

Having 520 ethernet problems

2003-02-17 Thread Tom W.
I have a 520 and for some reason, when I try to switch from localtalk to the
built-in ethernet, I get an error message and it refuses to do it.
I have tried zapping pram and re-installing a different system, all to no
avail.
Is there anything 520 specific I need to get the ethernet going?
Thanks
Tom

printing problems

2002-09-18 Thread Tom W

I just installed 8.1 on my 520C and hooked it up to a stylewriter II
printer. When I try to print it says "serial port in use by another
application". I tried switching appletalk over to ethernet because I thought
that might be the problem, but it gives me an error when doing that.
Any ideas?

Re: Need recommendation for niece's 1st Powerbook

I would recommend a 540C with OS 8.1. You can upgrade it to ppc later if you
wish. It is a good laptop with a nice color screen.

Will a duo work with a bad battery?

2002-06-26 Thread Tom W.

I have a duo 280C that if I put a good battery in, it works fine, but if I
put a dead battery in, the duo won't even start, even when the adaptor is
also plugged in. Is that normal?

Re: PDA's & Powerbooks?

2002-05-27 Thread Tom W.

If you haven't experienced the joy of Newton, I would try that. It's a
little bigger than your standard type pda, but has a huge screen and awesome
character recognition. The best part is there's a flood of 'em on ebay right
now and you can usually pick one up for $99 or $125 for a 2000 or 2100 if
you keep a close watch. There's some great Mac software to use with the
Newt.
Good luck
