Re: IP problem on PowerBook 3400 - static IPs

2003-10-29 Thread jim page

might want to try static IPs, not elegant but works for my 5 wired home
networked MACs running 8.6( three 3400's and two G3s)

i set up my linksys box to start assigning DHCP addresses at IP 100, so i
have addresses under 100 to assign statically

not elegant, simple, works for me

Re: quick tip: netscape 7 hangs on a 3400 ? (works now)

2003-06-06 Thread jim page

yeah, guess its one of those personal prefs

one other NS 7 feature i use is grouped bookmarks. there are six pages that
i open up when i kick off NS in the morning. NS 7 allows you to group them
into one bookmark and then from one click all six pages open up in separate
TAB'd windows

can then just click on the TAB to get to the one to work with

not sure if mozilla has the group'd bookmarks feature or not

Smaller windows?? Only if you open a gazillion and hit the edge of the
screen. But if you open a gazillion, how readable are the gazillion tabs?
My browsing habit is to open perhaps a dozen articles from a single page I'm
reading and if I open them in the desired order, there's no hunting for
windows -- you just click on the last one (or use that key combo that I can
 never remember).

Although I've downloaded NS 6 7 (I've got an iMac running 9.2.1 at work),
I guess I'm still left scratching my head about how the tabs could be so
drastically different than what I already do. But alas, I think we're
stretching the 'once-removed' rule for too long, so I'm going to let that be
that for this thread. (That is, until I possibly encounter a problem trying
one of these out on my 3400... ;-) )

quick tip: netscape 7 hangs on a 3400 ? (works now)

2003-06-04 Thread jim page

i was able to get Netscape 7 up an running on my 3400, began trashing Prefs
until it worked, thx

i agree bout the TAB'ed windows, don't knock it till you try it. no smaller
windows each new window and trying to find the open window you want

quick tip, NS7, IE5.1 and NS4.8 all offer menu and keyboard shortcuts to
cycle you to the next browser window/tab. easy to walk through the stuff
you have open.

being the lazy person i am i programmed one of the buttons on my
kensington trackball with the keyboard shortcut so the next window/tab is
just one click away

Does it still do that idiot redrawing every time it gets done loading a
 page?

No. Also Netscape 7 (AKA Mozilla 1.1 is a complete, from the ground-up
rewrite of the entire program. The *only* thing it shares in common with
NS 4.x is the name. However, it takes somewhat more computing horsepower
and memory than the old Netscape.

BTW, I'm not so sure I see what the big deal of tabbed windows is.
In IE I can open a link into a new window that's behind my other windows.

Don't knock it until you've tried it. Tabbed browsing is addictively
useful, particuarly when doing searches. (I'm in Mozilla about 4-7 hours
of any given day, as it's my e-mail and browser...depending on what
development I'm doing...we use the browser as the client for all our
database stuff, so I'm in a browser a LOT)

And IE just plain sucks donkey parts under OSX. It's like Microsoft
deliberately tried to see how many ways they could screw it up.

Mozilla/Netscape will be taken off my computers when you pry them out of
 my cold dead fingers...

looks like 8.6 is the most preferred OS for the 3400

does anyone have a list of the other goodies and the levels to get, like:
 - MRJ
 - CARBONLIB
 _ QUICKTIME
 - other stuff

Consult the 'one-stop shop' for such things...

i'm using IE 5.1 and NS 4.8, both seem to handle javascript and java very,
very slowly with cable modem access.

Do you have adequate RAM allocated to these apps?? Your cable modem should
have little to do with how well you handle java or javascript. Until they
execute, they're just like other page code you're downloading for display
and should come down to your machine fairly quickly. It's the execution
that could be boogered up. If you've got lots of plugins (or a few, but one
of them is Flash), then you need to bump up your browser's RAM allocation by
 a bunch.

Other possible factors include -- 1) are you having the browser cache on a
RAM disk or disk image (w/ ShrinkWrap you can tell it to load the entire
image into RAM if possible)? If not, then you could be bogging down due to
HD access, especially in the case of NS, which slams your drive with a
bazillion files. OR 2), are you accessing a site that's got a bandwidth
 problem on their end?

 Hope some of this helps...

 - Eric.
