Re: Locked scsi disk

2006-02-18 Thread Dan K
You need a formatting utility other than Apple's. I've used LaCie's
SilverLining for years, but I'm not sure of the current OS requirements.
You can download the current version here:
http://www.lacie.com/download/drivers/LaCieUpdater_654.sit

It's described as an updater, but I think it's just an installer.

Also, you try ATTO's tool, ExpressPro-Tools, again, the OS requirements
may be too high for your situation:
http://www.attotech.com/software/app1.html#macos9

You need to register (free) to login and DL.

You'll need to move the drive to a SCSI-Manager 4.3 compliant desktop Mac
to use either of the above tools IIRC.

OW, I'm not sure what other freely DL-able formatting utils are out there.

Re: Reading a burned 700MB capacity CD R on a PowerBook 3400

2006-02-03 Thread Dan K
I've had very poor luck with 700MB disks in older CD-ROM drives of all
sorts, so I wouldn't be too hopeful about the faster 3400 drives (all
from the same era.) You might try even other different 700MB media with
the slim chance that some 700MB media may be more compatible than those
you've tried.

Best bet is to burn 3400-bound disks to tested-for-3400 650MB media.

An alternative of course would be to use a modern USB or FW external
drive through a cardbus adapter.

The internal modem's connector only supports a modem. The signal lines

be _possible_ to devise some sort of card that appeared to the 'Book as a

Malcolm Cornelius [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I've a vague feeling that this has been discussed on the list before a
couple of years ago and we decided that there were several distinct
chargers.
Right you are Malcolm. Ok, here's more info than any of y'all really
wanted to know . . .

VST (now SmartDisk) made at least three versions of the 190/5300/3400
chargers. The first is for NiMH 190/5300 batteries only, the VST Charger
5000 (SCH5000), with the 190/5300-style power input socket only. For the
PowerBook 3400 VST produced a new model, the VST Charger 3400 (SCH3400)
which can charge the 3400's lithium batteries along with the older NiMH
packs, and it added as well a second power socket for the 3400's power
supply plug. With the arrival of the 3500 VST produced a new revision of
the SCH3400 charger which can handle charging the higher capacity Kanga
batteries. Confusingly, the 3500-capable model carries the same VST
Charger 3400 (SCH3400) model name. I can't recall if there is any
externally marked revision number difference, might be, been awhile :-P
However, I do recall that the earlier rev SCH3400 cannot charge Kanga
batteries.

Somewhere I have another make charger, 190/5300-only IIRC, might be
Absolute-brand come to think of it . . .

I've never ever seen any standalone charger for 2400 batteries, but maybe
I missed it.

Re: Which PowerBook is for me?

2006-01-04 Thread Dan K
list of items including:
Internal CD-ROM drive that can read CD-RW

This is an impossibly tough brief, $50 for all . . . however, while going
a bit over the original pricepoint . . .

I'll suggest a 1400 over anything before Lombard, for the simple reason
that it can be equipped with an internal modern optical drive. The
3400/3500/WS series cannot have their optical drives upgraded, and those
old opticals have loads of difficulty reliably reading CD-R/W disks.
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/macdan/ebms.html#3400sled

_If_ you can get a 1400 12x CD-ROM drive, you can upgrade that drive to a
modern optical:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/macdan/ebms.html#1400_12x

However, at this point at a minimum (with a bit of savvy shopping) you
are probably out:
1400 barebones - $50
12x EBM- $25
new optical- $20

near enough $100

Still, the next available 'Book which can be set up to reliably read
CD-R/W disks is a Lombard, for which one can expect to pay at least $200
or so. Add to that the required replacement optical, so total will be
around $225 minimum, though probably more.
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/macdan/PB_99_2K_EBM_sled.html

'Course, that's a enormously overall more competent machine, IMO well
worth the extra scratch.

Hmm, about to send this when I just thought of - a 3400 (or 3500 or WS,
they just cost more) can use an external FireWire drive, using a cardbus
FW adapter. Figure $75 for a barebones 3400, $25 for the FW adapter, and
roughly $50 - $75 for the external drive.

Well actually, if one were to use an external SCSI CD-R/W drive, one
could include most any PowerBook. Heck, with an internal ATA-SCSI bridge
(~$60 or more) you could plug a duallayer DVD-R/W into a PowerBook 100.

:-P

mmK, I'm done thinking now, hth,

Well, not really, OS 9 _will_ run with only 16MB real RAM _with_VM_on_,
but it's so dog slow with that little RAM you'd need to be a certified
masochist . . .

That said, OS 9 has much more native PPC code than does OS 8.6. With lots
of RAM and a faster-than-original HD (for speedy-ish VM) OS 9 is faster
in use than any other classic Mac OS. PPC code uses more resources (RAM
HD space) than 68K code, so you'll not be happy if you have less than
48MB, 64MB is better still. OS 9 does take longer to boot than earlier
systems, just takes longer to load all that extra-sized PPC code.

FYI, you can use up to OS 9.1 on the nubus-based 1400, the 9.2.x updates
require a PCI-based Mac.

There's always those folks who prefer the lighter weight of the earlier
systems, with their faster load times and generally snappier GUI
response. I prefer the more modern amenities of OS 9, plus the overall
speed of things like file copies, as well as OS 9's wider availability of
compatible software. I use OS 9.1 on my 333MHz G3/64MB/20GB 1400C and I'm
happy. Actually, I use OS 9.x over 8.x whenever possible, eg: my PB540C
PPC/167/40/30GB loves OS 9!

So IMHO the best thing is try 8.6 and 9.1 and see which feels more
'right' for _you_.

Re: EtherMac PB Adapter

2005-10-31 Thread Dan K
Kyle Koerner [EMAIL PROTECTED] asked:
I have a Farallon EtherMac PB Adapter for Ethernet. It connects to the
ADB port for power and the printer port for communications. However,
Farallon seems to be nonexistent now. I don't have a driver for this
adapter. Anyone know where I can get one? I'd love to get my
Powerbook 100 on my little ethernet network. Anyone able to help? I
tried Google, but I couldn't even find a company page.
IIRC, no driver is needed, the adapter appears to the Mac as a 'normal'
LocalTalk connection. Been awhile since I've used one though so I realize
I may not recall correctly at all.

Have you tried to use it without a driver?

Pismo problem

2005-10-12 Thread Wanda K.
Pismo people. I have a Pismo that will not start up It no longer gets a
startup bong. The power button will start the hard drive up, but nothing
else. no light in the screen. holding the power button down for five seconds
will stop the drive spinning. the reset button just causes the drive to stop
spinning. i changed out the hard drive for a known good drive and the
processor card for a know good processor card, but it does the same thing.
is this Pismo dead?

sort this later.
I still have 14gb of space from the rest of the drive though so thats
enough. the system is also running at 167mhz from the nupower card
and the batteries i have managed to recon are showing 2 hr 56 mins.
Which model ATA-SCSI adapter are you using? Did you initialize the drive
on the adapter, or off the adapter on a native ATA machine? What utility
did you use to initialize the drive?

I suspect you have an ADTX adapter (such as came on the OEM Apple 1GB
drive.) If so you can only use the first ~8GBs of the drive, anything
beyond that will be (or will become) a scrambled mess. Here's my page on
the subject of adapters:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/macdan/pb_scsi_ata.html

Running system 8.1 I have a pcmcia cage but it is a revision b is the
cage from another mac able to be swapped because if so i have a
pcmcia flash drive 512.mb and an orinoco card that i can use.
AFAIK, you can't use a rev B on a PPC 'Book, but give it a try anyway,
might work after all.

Here's a couple of replies to some of the other suggestions you've
received.

First, you can use a network access disk (NAD) to install stuff over an
ethernet network, but you'll proably have to roll your own NAD for a PPC
PB500, here's my helpful page on the subject:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/macdan/nad.html

Secondly, I'll suggest (if you have the installer) using OS 9.1, which I
have on both of my 167MHz PBs 500:
http://members.aol.com/dankephoto/ppc_upgrade/86patch.htm

I love using 9.1 on a PB500, though others may disagree. You've got the
drive space and pace, as well as well as (I assume) maxed out RAM.

It's really a good thing to have a SCSI cable and a CD drive for your
'Book. Cost is low, value is high.

Re: Best way to legally copy DVD

It's not the copying that's illegal, it's circumventing copy protection
that breaks the law. You can still (AFAIK) legally copy (for your own

legally speaking, I wonder if copy protection includes MacroVision?

Re: Best way to legally copy DVD

2005-07-01 Thread Dan K
First off, to legally copy a copy-protected commercial DVD you'll have to
move to a country where it's legal, currently it's not legal in the good
ol' USA. That said:

I haven't found any Mac tools that can do what the freeware win32 app
DVD Shrink can do, which is, in one step, copy an entire DVD (including
all menus) so it fits completely on a DVD-R. It offers a host of options
including variable compression, region choice (or no region), macrovision
removal, removing P-UOPs, etc., it's super easy to use, it outputs very
nice looking movies, and it's free.

I _could_ use it regularly to make working copies of my 5 yr old
daughter's DVDs. When she inevitably destroys a copy I _could_ just haul
out the original and burn her another copy. Not that I _do_, just that I
_could_, you see what I mean don't you?

If you don't have access to a win32 PC, then spend $50 and buy one. I
hate using a WinPC for anything, but it's little gems like DVD Shrink,
unavailable on a Mac, what makes it well worthwhile to have a Wintel box
around the joint. Not that I _do_ use it for such things, but I _could_,
if only it was legal.

Legal, legal, legal . . . such backups are apparently quite illegal here
in the states. Man-o-man, having to _describe_ this like I just did
_above_ seems quite _un-American_, somehow . . .

Re: MORE! PowerBook 1400c Memory Problems

2005-06-07 Thread Dan K
PBs 1400 are notoriously RAM flaky. The 1400's memory controller is
especially sensitive to timing variations in the RAM modules, and adding
additional RAM usually makes things worse. The longer circuits (with
additional modules) add capacitance which affects how the RAM and memory
controller interact. If any part of the total RAM package is even close
to being out of spec the mess can be useless.

This also explains why RAM may work in one arrangement and not in another
where the modules are not identical. The piggybacked module is further
from the memory controller and is thus loaded with longer circuits.

I've found the Sonnet G3 upgrades to be especially sensitive to RAM
issues, where modules which work fine with a standard processor fail with
the G3 installed.

Some of this is explained in the PB1400 addendum devnote:
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/Developer_Notes/Macintos
h_CPUs-PPC_Portable/PowerBook_1400_Addendum.pdf

yes, it is, but it's a NiCd battery, and they die. Also the
replacement instructions for a PRAM battery in the 500 series is:
Remove everything that doesn't look like a PRAM battery.

Re: Pismo...upside down logo

2005-05-28 Thread Dan K
Anyone see this thread as a tad silly . . . errr, no? Hmmm . . .
right then . . .

I think cutting out the old logo, the new hole being a larger 'upside
down' . . . err, right-side-up logo is the cleanest solution. As for the
'insert' to use in the new larger hole - I've checked all the 'Book
display-back Apple logos from clamshell iBook to 17 AlBook and none are
large enough to cover a WS/Lombard/Pismo's old Apple logo's outline.
Everything I have from dual USB iBook and first gen TiBook up to the revs
A/B 12 and 17 AlBooks are identically sized, but the clamshell's Apple
is the largest of all by a small margin.

Therefore, unless there's some 'Book I've overlooked, one would likely
need to fabricate a new larger Apple insert for that factory look some of
y'all seem to crave.

How about using the Apple logo inserts from the side of a B+W form-factor
desktop? Now there's a statement! Sadly, color choices are limited to
blue and a couple shades of gray. Hmm, I don't have any recent Apple
desktop displays, are any of those logos appropriate?

Just had another (silly) thought or two . . . if one cut out the old
Apple's surround as a circle, one could fab some sort of
spinning/rotating thinga-ma-bob where one could turn the Apple anytime to
any orientation one desired. Now how's that for a complete solution?!?!
G Oo, oo, how about having it motorized somehow, so that it
turns 180 degrees when you open the lid!?!!? And back again when you shut
it?!?!?! Or even just constantly whirls when ever you have the lid
open?!?!? Alright, nobody steal that idea, that's a winner that one is!!
G

See, this _is_ a silly thread, I've just ensured its silliness!

I just did a swap a couple weeks ago and I never did any work on a PB
before and it's pretty easy to do. And the C screen is so much
better than the CS is. I looked on Ebay for a while with out any
luck except for the $40.00 + shipping auctions that are always on
Ebay. I ended up getting a 1400c with some problems but a good screen
for less than the screen prices I could find so I did a swap.

I have several 1400's, had two sitting side by side and the difference
of the 1400c and the 1400cs is like night and day.

Re: Junkyard Pismo ?

2005-05-27 Thread Dan K
The problem with constructing a 'Book (or any 'puter really) from bits is
that without a complete correctly working unit in which to test parts
it'll be very frustrating not being able to figure which part(s) is
causing the inevitable problems.

Though it runs counter to the OP's original proposal, it's much better to
first buy a complete, working unit, then patiently source the bits for
the second unit. Trust me (hard-won-lesson), troubleshooting without
known-working spares is a total headache. Thus the
rock-solid-totally-logical-can't-argue-with-common-sense reason I always
have wy more Macs than I _really_ need. :-)

snipped introduction
A Kanga was configured with an external SCSI drive, an EIDE/UATA DVD
drive converted as described above. The Apple DVD Player 1.3 software
was installed on a clean install of Mac OS 9.0.

A Wallstreet DVD decoder card was inserted into the Kanga. The decoder
card was recognized. A DVD was inserted into the drive. The DVD would be
recognized as such,
but would not launch the Apple DVD Player.

Launching the Apple DVD Player application manually resulted in a
missing hardware warning, followed by an orderly application
termination.
I was gonna suggest using MacsBug to try and figure exactly what hardware
component is 'missing', but IIRC DVD Player won't run if there's a
debugger installed. :-( How the heck can one discover exactly what is
missing? What does System Profiler say? This is one of those mysterious
things where I could never figure out exactly what was missing, at least
not without alot of PITA trial and error testing.

I sure wish I had a Kanga, I'd try your same setup using an internal
DVD-ROM drive, not that it would likely make any difference.

If you have X installed, perhaps try VLC.

I'd like to know too. Mine does it, but it will fix itself if I pinch

Absolutely. The only way to _positively_ fix it is to check the
conductivity of the screen's film wire (flat wire ?) with a voltmeter.
That
is, each wire on the film. You might also check that the tiny prongs on
the
board terminal are straight and the connection is well seated and locked
in
tight by the little tabs on the sides of the mobo connector.

The above is from my own experience, me loving to take things apart!

John, I have to ask, Did you take your 'Book apart recently or did it
suffer
 a hit?

 Sincerely yours, Grizzlygiant

 --
Actually, it did about a month ago. The plate the covers up the microphone
broke off and I had someone put epoxy on it. Would this make it harder to
fix? It's starting to crack, so it would probably be easy for me to get it
apart if I needed to. I got the lines to go away by pinching the edges of
the screen.

Re: Can't install 7.5.3

2005-04-22 Thread John K. Perkins Jr.
If the filename has .bin at the end of it you have to use StuffIt Expander
to decode the files. I can send it to you if you don't have it.

Subject: Can't install 7.5.3

 Hi, all,

I'm still struggling with this 190cs.

I realized yesterday that linux can read just about any filesystem out
there, so I looked through the man pages, and, sure enough, there was
the hfs filesystem -- it just wasn't turned on in the default
configurations. So I recopied all 20 files onto floppies that I'd
formatted on the PB. I now have 20 files of OS7.5.3 in native format on
 my PB hard drive.

Following the instructions, I double-clicked the first .bin file. Adobe
Acrobat reader came up and said it couldn't open the file. In fact, it
did the same thing when I double-clicked on the .info.txt file, hoping
to find some relief there. I thought maybe all the exra dots might be a
problem (some filesystems can't take extra dots), and changed the
7.5.3 in the middle of the filename to 7_5_3. Acrobat Reader still
comes up. Won't open the .info.txt file either.

I can't find any help on changing (what Windows calls) file
associations, either in the 190 menus or in the 190 user manual. What
 do I do now?

 John Perry

I'd like to know too. Mine does it, but it will fix itself if I pinch
the sides of the screen. Just smack it around a bit! Hehehe. Usually

hacking an MCE Wallstreet optical EBM

2005-03-26 Thread Dan K
I finally, after a false start or two, got my hands on an MCE Wallstreet
optical expansion bay. I ended up with the rarest of the rare, thier
CDRW/DVD-ROM combo drive.

I immediately took it apart and examined its interface PCB, pics here:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/macdan/mce_optical_ebm.html

What's cool, and of interest to this list, is the fact the interface
board also works fine in the 3400, as well as (I assume) Kanga. I swapped
the IF board onto a Matshita CW-8121 ex-TiBook slotloader and stuffed it
into a 3400's EB. Booting from a OS 8.5 CD, here's the ASP details.

. . . Machine ID:. . . 306
. . . Model name:. . . PowerBook 3400 series
. . . Keyboard type:. . . PowerBook Extended Keyboard
. . . Processor info:. . . PowerPC 603ev
. . . Machine speed:. . . 240 MHz
. . . Devices and Volumes
. . . Expansion Bay 1
. . . . . . ID = 0
. . . . . . . . . . . . DVD-ROM drive
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Driver version:. . . 1.0.3
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Mac OS partitions:. . . 1
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Removable media:. . . Yes
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Vendor:. . . MATSHITA
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Revision number:. . . AA12
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Product ID:. . . CD-RW CW-8121

Anyway, I'll have some more pics and details up ASAP, just figured I'd
post this now in case anyone might be interested.

Also . . . the thought has occurred to me there might still be a market
for optical EBMs for these older 'Books. Anyone care to comment on the
business case for producing a few hundred EBM kits (maybe just EBM shell
and IF PCB, sans mechanism) that could be used in both Wallstreet and
3400/Kanga?

Re: 2300c Question

2005-03-13 Thread Dan K
Not necessarily slow, OS 9.1 can be quite satisfactorily speedy on a
2300C, caveated (!) :-) by two things:

1) you must have _real_ 56MB ram (2300's maximum)

and!

B) you gotta replace the puke-slow original HD with a modern, fast drive
(say 8 or 10 GBs at least.)

With those two conditions met you _will_ be satisfied with OS 9.1. If you
can't do either, then go with the other recommendations.

dan k (once again, couldn't resist being an OS9-pushin' troll!)

Re: MasterCook

2005-02-23 Thread L K M
what does this program do and where did you get it, or where is it now
available? This sounds like a good use for my old PB.

I have a 170 that I keep in my kitchen to store recipes on. It uses an
 old version of Mastercook.

MasterCook does everything but cook, it has recipes, the ability to insert
your own recipes, get recipes online, figure measurements, calories, ect,
make shopping lists, meal planning, search recipes, and print your own
cookbook. Each version is a little different in features but I found the old
ones works fine for what I need.

I use MasterCook Deluxe 4. This version, if I remember correctly, contains
both a Mac and PC version on the CD. I don't know if there are newer
versions for Mac, I've only seen PC versions after 4.

I found my copy at a thrift store. They are pretty common and you should be
able to find one easily on eBay.

I have all my tried and true recipes in MasterCook. I can insert notes or
adjustments on the fly. Or search for all recipes using a certain
ingredient. I have some special categories, like Thanksgiving, so choose the
meal plan and have it make a shopping list for me. Very fun : )

I tried a lot of the recipe shareware programs but couldn't get them to work
on both the PB 170 and my G3. I need the software to run on my online
computer so that I can download new recipes or be able to email them to
friends.

Under classic Mac OS I used Netscape Navigator 4.08 until it simply could

I've yet to discover anything to stop it, and it's fast and stable.
Lately, it's the browser I've been pushing on customers, friends and

even equal) to the above combination.

With 'Books, I use a USB Kensington Orbit. While not tiny, it's just
compact enough to slip into a 'Book case. The ball is smaller than the
billiard-sized balls I so love with my desktop, but large enough to be
unfiddly, unlike some other portable trackballs I've seen. Cheap too, I
think I paid $12 or thereabouts for a pair of 'em (brand new!) on eBay. I
confess, it's mostly for gaming, ever play a FPS with a T-pad?!?

When bopping about however I still mostly use the trackpad, it does
rather defeat alot of the portability thing dealing with a dangling
T-ball. No matter, I'm quite comfortable switching between them. I have
just never warmed up to mice, though I'm certainly spoiled having for so

Re: Lucent Silver to Gold

2004-11-03 Thread Dan K
From: Alex Wenzel [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
I always thought that Airport Cards had a different wiring than WLAN PC
Cards. This might be wrong.
But I see no way how a PC Card (which usually has a bulky antenna attached),
should fit into the Airport card slot of a G3 iBook. I just opened my iBook
to be sure. I have an original Lucent Orinoco Silver. It doesn't fit.

I just stuck an orinoco PC card into my 500 mHz IceBook's AP slot, works
fine.

'Course ya can't put the keyboard in place with the PC card there, but
the point of the thread was about flashing silver to gold, not actually
using it in there.

The wiring thing applies to AP cards in PC card slots, that doesn't work.

Re: Lucent Silver to Gold

2004-10-31 Thread Dan K
Alex Wenzel [EMAIL PROTECTED] opined:
A PC Card won't fit into an internal Pismo Airport slot.

to which Drew Kershaw [EMAIL PROTECTED] (correctly) replied:
I beg to differ seeing as how I'VE DONE IT.

which prompted Beniamino Cenci Goga's [EMAIL PROTECTED] query:
I thoght that was the solution. Will an iBook G3 accomplish the same thing?

Ought to. The Dual USB iBooks have enough room to temporarily install a
PC card and I'm pretty sure (though I don't have a clamshell in front of
me) that the earlier iBooks have plenty of room as well.

Another alternative would be to use an AP-slot-equipped desktop to flash
a Lucent-chipped PC card to 128 bit encryption.

The key point is the card must be in a _real_ AP slot to use Apple's 2.0
update flasher. That rules out non-AP-slot Macs (eg: Lombard, Wallstreet,
etc.), but includes Pismo, G3 iBooks, TiBooks, and any PM G4 Sawtooth or
later, plus most slotload G3 iMacs, though I'm not sure about how easy it
would be to get a full-sized PC card into that AP card area.

You can buy the original size cells (IIRC 4/5 AA? my memory is leaky
agin!) from many different battery suppliers. However, I'll suggest
purchasing a 9.6v RC pack, which contains the required number of cells
(usually AA cells.) Works fine, slightly smaller AA cells easier to fit
into case, lower price than 8 puka 4/5 AA cells, etc.

Look in your local hobby shops, RatShak, similar.

Re: 1/2 OT: watch out seller _ follow up

2004-09-20 Thread Dan K
OTOH . . .

I've been an eBay buyer and seller since July '98 with 100% positive
rating of 450 on 526 feedbacks (dankephoto.) I treat my buyers as I
would wish to be treated and they've reciprocated in kind.

As a seller I _always_ leave positive feedback once the item has shipped.
The buyer has done their part by paying, else why would I have shipped
the item? If the buyer has a problem with the item, I make it right based
on my guarantee of satisfaction, rather than an implied threat based on
so-far unleft feedback.

Similarly, I never leave feedback for those from whom I've bought until
they leave feedback for me. I consider my obligation finished once I've
payed, if the seller is too cynical to leave feedback, well then I say
they don't need mine. The idea that I'm obligated to be _satisfied_()
before the seller posts feedback is the height of arrogance on their
part. I'm not interested in rewarding such people for their presumption.

In response to the OP's question - the seller doesn't have to leave
feedback, and nor do you. If you feel they have not treated you
courteously you are entitled to withhold any positive words you otherwise
might have written.

I've got a PB 170 here that has been dropped a few times, and so has breaks
in the plastic around the keyboard, bottom of screen hinges, etc. I also
have a PB 150 here that seemingly has a dead board...no chime, nada. So,
can I make a 'frankenbook' by putting the 150 screen and top case half onto
the 170 bottom case half/motherboard, etc.?
Dunno about the 150, haven't got one.

I do know about fixing old PowerBook plastics though. I'm sure everyone
here gets tired of me mentioning Ambroid ProWeld plastic welder, but the
stuff does a fantastic job of fixing cracked old PowerBook plastics. It
can't replace missing pieces, but if you have everything you can pretty
much repair all of it with ProWeld.

I've reassemebled some pretty shattered 'Book parts, doesn't always look
pretty once I'm done but it's functional. If yer _very_ careful and the
parts fit together well you can do a nearly invisible repair.

1400C Sonnet G3/333/512 got HOT!!

2004-08-28 Thread Dan K
Ouch! I just grabbed my (sleeping?!?!) 1400 to check the benchmarking
results of a Viper 340mb PC card drive . . .

Wow, the whole base is burning hot! It's been sleeping (?) for at least a
week hooked to a PS. The battery isn't very hot, but the heatsink is
waaay too hot to touch, it's scorching hot!! I didn't notice if the sleep
light was on prior to opening the lid, but I'm thinking it wasn't. I'm
sure it didn't help whatever happened that it was inside a stack of other
'Books.

I'm thinking I had a similar problem before, but can't recall now if it
was with this processor or with a 183.

Anyone have any insights?

the dual size PCMCIA slot. The info says they're a type 3 card.
They initialize, and format and I've loaded 8.0 and 8.6 on one each
for trouble shooting.
I bought one of the 340MBers for US$19.50 shipped:

pretty nifty. I benchmarked it in a 1400/G3/9.1 using TimeDrive 3. IIRC
(being that my 1400 seems to be trying to torch itself at the moment, see
other thread) it was doing reads and writes in the 1.5MB/s vicinity.

Re: VST hard drive replacement

Daniel De L'eau [EMAIL PROTECTED] asks:
Can the hard drive in a VST module for a 5300 be replaced with a larger

Almost certainly. I hesitate to use a completely positive response as
I've never had a HD EBM for 5300, but in all other models I've owned
could the drive be swapped.

my page for PBs '99/'00 EBMs, but I'm sure 5300 EBMs are similar:

Re: Where to get PowerBook 1400 CD-ROM Module and PCMCIA SCSI card?

2004-08-18 Thread Dan K
Andrew McCall [EMAIL PROTECTED] wanted to know about SCSI PC
card adapters for a PB1400.

I'm not clear on why one would need or want such a thing for a 1400, the
obvious answer is to use the built-in SCSI port.

Eh?

Also, 1400 CD expansion bay modules are widely available even in the UK .
. . again going for the obvious, how about eBay? 6x and 8x modules sell
for (USD) $15 to $50, 12x for $20 to $60, keep a continuous watch for a
bit and ye will be rewarded with a bargain. A dead 12x (_cheap_!) is
almost always the best deal, as a replacement Teac 24x CD-224e drive
mechanism (eBay, usually new) can be found for under $20.

You'll find some details here:

Re: PB 540c

2004-08-18 Thread Dan K
Mattox, Thoma [EMAIL PROTECTED] asks:
What is the largest hard drive that I can use in this? I have a 1GB
hard drive that uses the IDE to SCSI adapter. I would like to go
larger, but not sure how large I can go...

Also, what are the specs on what hard drive I need to look for? I know
IDE, but anything else I need to look for?

With your 1GB drive you can go up to ~8GB, the size limited by the ADTX
adapter's controller. You can use any size drive, but larger drives will
format only to that ~8GB limit.

Using another adapter you may be able to go larger, the pair of Century
adapters I've got have a 32GB limit. I've got 30GB travelstars attached
to mine inside PPC/167-powered 540Cs, and they work dandy. Of course it's
kinda silly to use such large drives with such an venerable Mac, but
somehow I've managed to pretty much fill them both up anyway. :-)

Re: Possible to use two Connectix QuickCams using one PowerBook?

2004-08-18 Thread Dan K
I wrote:
AFAIK it's not possible to use more than one Quicktime camera
with any Macintosh, at least not under a classic Mac OS as
QT can't deal with more than one video source at once.

to which George Mogiljansky [EMAIL PROTECTED] replied:
Thanks for that.
I should have mentioned that I will be attempting to
use either or both CoolCam and DigitalRadar apps. The
camera(s) will only be activated (I'm hoping) when a
certain set of conditions is met (probably involving
night-time darkness).

The powerbook will be unattended for long periods of
time (probably weeks). I am searching for a
3400-compatible USB PCMCIA card that will provide
enough power to connect a Kensington USB cam as a
second camera (if that's possible - to use both the
Connectix and the Kensington).

Power failures are common in the area, so the Li ion
battery will have to take over and keep things humming
until the power comes back on. This means I cannot
use a desktop (which might have made things easier).

So far, I have avoided the option of getting a proper
surveillance apparatus. Is there any other Mac-ready
option (HW or SW or both) that might be useful?

Doesn't matter the source (serial or USB), if using QuickTime as the
underlying transport you cannot have more than one video input at a time
per Mac.

Your's is an interesting problem and I'm curious to see how you solve it.

My thinking, given the one-camera-per-Mac limit, is to use multiple
inexpensive PBs to do the capturing. IIRC, Digital Radar can run on any
68030 or better, so even a PB500 or 190 would do the trick. A PB500 has
built-in ethernet _and_ video out, but uses (small) SCSI HDs and has no
PCcard slots. The PB190 has PCcard slots and uses ATA drives but lacks
video out and built-in enet . . . sigh.

Another idea - I've been seeing stand-alone IP-based cams for around
$100, eg:
http://www.pimfg.com/product_detail.asp?master_desc=secondary_desc=part=
IC-300

and w/audio:
http://www.pimfg.com/product_detail.asp?master_desc=secondary_desc=part=
IC-301

more money, more features?:
http://www.pimfg.com/product_detail.asp?master_desc=secondary_desc=part=
NC-1000S
more more features, and wifi connected to boot:
http://www.pimfg.com/product_detail.asp?master_desc=secondary_desc=part=
NC-1000W

Might something like one of these be an option? Interestingly, you can
probably run a QuickCam on your 3400 while simultaneously accepting an IP
video feed.

Another (more costly) solution is conventional video surveillance
hardware, with video cameras feeding either into a time-lapse VCR or into
a Mac-based video digitizer. The key with these setups is using a
multiplexer, which lumps several video feeds into one. I'm sure you've
seen security screens where there are, for example, 4 individual pictures
on one TV monitor. IIRC, a four-up multiplexer ain't cheap ($300?), but
it may be possible to source something pre-owned.

BTW, if theft is the problem you face, aren't you a tad concerned the
thieves will make off with your carefully crafted surveillance setup? :-P

Re: Blackbird 520PPC

2004-08-12 Thread Dan K
Mattox, Thoma [EMAIL PROTECTED]wrote:
The PPC cards created for the Blackbird were made by 2
companies...Sonnetts (sold as an Apple upgrade) and Newer Technologies.
Both companies used the PPC 603e processors. Sonnetts ran around 117mhz
with 8mb ram and Newer had at least 2 different upgrades. One ran at
167mhz with 8mb ram and the other ran at 182mhz with L2 Cache and 25 mb
ram (I think).

I've never before heard that the Apple PPC upgrade was made by Sonnet. My
understanding is that Newer made all the PPC upgrades, including the
100mHz Apple-branded item, as well as the Newer branded 117, 133, 167 and
183 upgrades.

The Apple item includes 8MB of ram on the upgrade card. The 117, 133 and
167 upgrades were available with on-card ram in quatities of 0MB, 4MB and
8MB. AFAIK the 183 (a much different design than the earlier models BTW)
never shipped with the promised 24MB on-card ram. There may be a few
183/24MB dev units out in the world, but apparently some technical
difficulty and/or parts shortages precluded actual shipping product
before all PB500 upgrade production ended.

All PB500 PPC upgrades speeds are hardware set, any ASP-reported
discrepancies between an upgrades reported speed and its actual speed are
the result of ASP's inability to deal with non-standard hardware. The 183
upgrade _does_ need the init to enable its cache, however it still runs
at 183 even if the init isn't present. An additional _major_ function of
the init was to ensure ASP correctly reported the upgrade's speed. Before
the init was released, customers were complaining in droves that ASP was
reporting wrong processor speeds (usually low!) A utility like Newer's
Gauge PRO will correctly report the processor speed even when ASP will
not.

BTW, here's my page on running OSes 8.5/6/9.1 on PPC upgraded Blackbirds:

Re: SCSI DVD ROM or PB1400c

2004-06-09 Thread Dan K
PBs 1400 can use an expansion bay DVD-ROM drive using a 12x CD-ROM EBM
shell and interface board. Laptop/slim DVD reader mechanisms are _very_
cheap. I tested a slim DVD-ROM reader I had laying about and it worked
fine reading DVD-ROMs.

my page on 1400 optical EBMs:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/macdan/ebms.html#1400_12x

While PBs 1400 can access data DVDs, they cannot play video DVDs (AFAIK),
the video hardware just ain't near-enough powerful. Hmm, unless there's a
SW decoder that will work with a G3 upgrade under classic Mac OS. Which
I've never seen. But about which I'd gladly learn. :-)

Any PCI desktop Macs can use an ATAPI DVD drive through a PCI/ATA
adapter. In theory (haven't done it myself, near as I can recall) such a
video-DVD-capable display card as a Radeon Mac Edition or R7000 can do
the trick under both OSes 9 and X. Might require a bit of hackage to get
installed and running, I'm not exactly familiar with the details.

Re: PB 5300 using a 3400/Kanga battery?

2004-05-20 Thread Dan K
As Roger points out, a 5300 cannot charge a LiIon battery (AFAIK), but
can indeed run on one. A couple of eons (errr . . . years) ago, I tested
a 5300C with a 3400 battery. I recall that at full clip (no powersaving
at all) it got something over 4 hours of runtime. Not sure now how much
over, might have been 6 or 8 hours or some crazy amount. I DO remember
though being VERY VERY impressed, especially since I was used to my 1400
batteries lasting at most 1.5 hrs on a _good_ day.

Long time ago, old brain leaks, y'all understand (hopefully. :-)

Re: 1400 CD drive options?

2004-04-13 Thread Dan K
Brian [EMAIL PROTECTED] asks:
Is there any way yet to put a faster or -RW drive in a 6X carrier? The
last I read you could put a 24X -RW drive in, but only if you had the
12X CD module to start with. And that concurs with the guy who is
always selling the 24X -RW internals on ebay...

I'm not aware of any CD-RW device using the same physical interface used
in the 6x/8x 1400 CD drives. The easiest, simplest and probably cheapest
path to a modern optical drive is to acquire a 12x EBM with its standard
mechanism interface connector.

see my EBM page for more infos:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/macdan/ebms.html

One could however use a 6x/8x EBM as a HD EBM:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/macdan/pb1400_hd_ebm.html

Mad Dog Tom [EMAIL PROTECTED] chimed in:
As far as I know, no one has sucessfully been able to burn a CD using
an internal CDR/W/ on a 1400. You can put one in (I forget the
model), and it will read fine, but not burn. IIRC.

I've read (Japanese page of course! :-) that B's Recorder Gold can burn
to a 1400 EBM CD-RW. However I haven't been able to track down that sw
myself, so can't confirm or deny.

and more from MD:
Now, again, IIRC, you can replace the 6x with a TEAC 12x mechanism,
the 8x for a 16x TEAC, and a 12x for a 24X TEAC. Not exactly sure
about the 6x swap though.

MD, I'm not aware of those other mechanisms to which you refer, but I see
no reason an 8x mechanism wouldn't fit a 6x EBM. Not that that matters a
whole heck of a lot. If those faster Teac mechanisms (with that
particular IF) are out there, they are likely not very common.

Re: PB3400c ADB chip ?

2004-04-07 Thread Dan K
Tom P aka Mad Dog asks:
Does anyone know which chip on the 3400 controlls the ADB ?

Opening the PB3400 devnote . . . the Architecture block chart on page
11 shows the PMU IC with ADB responsibilities. Then on pages 15 and 16 we
find this helpful info:

quote
Power Management Unit
The power management unit (PMU) is a 68HC05 microprocessor that operates
with its own RAM and ROM. The PMU IC performs the following functions:
controls sleep and power on and off sequences
controls power to the other ICs
controls clock signals to the other ICs
supports the ADB
scans the keyboard
controls display brightness
monitors battery charge level
controls battery charging
/quote

does any of that help?

What the heck are you up to now? G

Re: PB 520c track pad the same as the 5300????

2004-03-28 Thread Dan K
Drew Kershaw [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
The trackpad mechanism itself may be swappable, but I'm pretty sure
that it isn't. I believe the 5x0 series used a 1st generation
trackpad, the 5300 a 2nd generation trackpad, and the 190, 2300, and
1400 all used a 3rd generation trackpad. The connectors on each
should be unique. Anyone with a 5300 and a 500 series care to take a
look?

Yes, the 500 and 5300 TPs should be swappable (same PCB part number,
chips and connector.) Haven't done it myself though, at least not that I
can recall. :-)

The 2300, 190, 3400, Kanga and Wallstreet pads should all be
interchangable (exactly the same-shape PCB and same connector.) I've used
3400 TPs in 2300 and 190 TPs in 3400. The 2300's pad is the only one
that's _not_ 'tappable'.

Wallstreet's TP is nearly identical, but its PCB's model number is TM1002
vs. model TM1001 on the earlier TP (with one chip having a similar PN
difference.) I've not used a WS TP in other 'Books so I can't say for
sure if it'd work or not, though I bet it would.

Re: iDVD a Pismo?

2004-03-26 Thread Dan K
pace [EMAIL PROTECTED] asks:
Has anyone found a way to get iDVD to work
on a G3 Powerbook 2000, firewire/pismo?

Is there a way to get one of the superdrives
to work in these, that let iDVD work?

The only solution of which I'm aware: attach an iDVD-compatible DVD-R to
the expansion bay bus. I haven't done this myself, but I did supply an
empty EBM HD case to someone who then built a adapter cable from the
EBM's interface connector out to an external iDVD-compatible fullsize
ATAPI DVD-R drive. iDVD then worked fine according to the fellow's report.

Kinda not-very-portable though . . .

I've got a couple of EBM DVD-R/W drives, neither are usable with iDVD
(Matshita UJ811b, Toshiba 6012 (??something like that).)

better: Firewire? Thank you for your answer(s)!
FW works fine on my 3400s:

and others have had success with USB cards

VidaVerde [EMAIL PROTECTED] asks:
Can you take a couple of photos as you do it? Just so the rest of us

My 3400 bus-multiplier resistors photo-mishmash, but the crystal is in
there somewhere too:

Yikes, I really should re-do that pic, what a mess! (now that I'm taking
