yah, before I spread much more FUD, it was my error assuming that
the 24X TEAC mechanisms referred to often on ebay and on the page
Tom mentioned were -RW... it is just a faster CDROM drive.

One word of warning: Some of the TEAC mechanisms wont work out of
the box in a 1400 as some are cable select. Although someone figured
out how to fix that little problem.

OK, that helps. I've got an external (tiny) SCSI drive, that burns at
1X, I guess I'll keep using that for portable Cd options (it's a cute
drive, -RW, Ricoh MP8040SE- works with Toast 5, I've been meaning to
try it with an older version of Toast since v5 won't show the progress
indicator properly).

Thanks,

I'm not aware of any CD-RW device using the same physical interface used
in the 6x/8x 1400 CD drives. The easiest, simplest and probably cheapest
path to a modern optical drive is to acquire a 12x EBM with its standard
mechanism interface connector.

see my EBM page for more infos:

One could however use a 6x/8x EBM as a HD EBM:

I've read (Japanese page of course! :-) that "B's Recorder Gold" can burn
to a 1400 EBM CD-RW. However I haven't been able to track down that sw
myself, so can't confirm or deny.

and more from MD:

MD, I'm not aware of those other mechanisms to which you refer, but I see
no reason an 8x mechanism wouldn't fit a 6x EBM. Not that that matters a
whole heck of a lot. If those faster Teac mechanisms (with that
particular IF) are out there, they are likely not very common.

So, I've finally got around to moving my 1400 setup onto a "working"
1400 mainboard, the original one, for some reason both the CD and
floppy interfaces were dead (no obvious cracks or anything on the
little support pieces, that's about all I checked).

Anyway I have one working 6X CD module and one non working 6X module
(that sounds like it just needs the laser refocussed, have to try
that sometime).

Is there any way yet to put a faster or -RW drive in a 6X carrier?
