Sorry for the delay, I had to dig out my old paperwork on this, on the
Processor board you need to identify R20 and R21, they are small surface
mount resistors, on the 166 R20 should be 10k (103) and position R21 should
be open, to convert to 133 you must remove R20 and fit a 1K (102) resistor
to R21, and that is it!! it should now run as a 133 in any 1400 board.
Ben.
NB the numbers in brackets are the markings on the resistors.

Somewhere in your mail client you should have a command like Reply to

So,

What this link is saying is that I CAN upgrade my 117mhz with a 133mhz
CPU that includes the backside cache?

If so, that's what I want! :D

Can anyone confirm this? I'd really like to make my 117 a 133. Too bad I

-Eagan

You can upgrade if your 1400 is equipped with the newer ROMs.

Yes, any 1400 will support the 133, as detailed in the link, only the later
rom's will support 166.
Have you checked your Rom's? the upper ones can be seen if you remove the
factory installed Ram card (4/8Mb).

Why couldn't you? Don't you just have to find someone that's upping their
1400/166 to a G3? Try the Low End Mac swap list put out a message there
about what you're looking for. Or, as someone suggested, cruise eBay and
look for folks buying G3's for their 1400's and ask them what they're

generally find a good deal if you just remember that it doesn't hurt to ask

Re: 1400 Processor Upgrade

2003-07-09 Thread Rick McCutcheon
I have two PB1400s sitting on my desk right now (one c one cs). I also
happen to have a 166 daughtercard sitting in a box on the shelf beside my
desk. Why, you might ask, is that 166 daughtercard sitting on a shelf when
it could be comfortably sitting inside one of these PB1400s? Because when
I tried to put it in them, ziiip - pop. Nothing. The machine
I am writing this on has a 133 Mhz processor -- the other one is the same.
If you find a way to make the 166 Mhz daughtercard work in a 117/133 --
short of replacing the MoBo to a 166 MoBo, which is a possibility, and why
I keep the card -- then I'm first in line to do it!!

In my research I found that there were apparently a *very* few 133s that
had the new ROM that would make it possible to use the 166 processor,
unfortunately, neither of mine do... (I think Mad Dog gave a link to a FAQ
on it). Whoever posted the note saying that they actually had a 133 that
was upgraded to 166 is the first real-world example that I have heard.
Does anyone know what percentage of 133s were made with the new ROM? Were
there serial numbers that could be used to determine which one you have?
The 166 Mhz processor, btw, can be identified by the little black button
sitting beside the backside cache on the card -- thanks to Malcolm for that
little note

Hi folks,

Looking for a definitive answer as to whether it is possible to replace the
133 cpu with a 166 cpu. I have read innumerable faqs, some saying yes, some
saying no way. Is this possible and if yes what is the qualifier as to
whether a particular 133 can be upgraded? Thanks.

No problem, any modern IDE HDD will fit ok, you may have problems if you try
to go over 130Gb, but a 40, 80 or 120 should just drop in fine. (the
mounting holes are different, but that is not much of a problem, everyone
who upgrades seems to come up with a different way round that).

I dropped an IBM TravelStar 5400 20Gig into my 1400c. No problems, holes fit
perfectly. Has been a solid drive for over 8 months now. Best 80 bucks I've ever spent.

1400 Processor Upgrade

2003-07-08 Thread allenpau
Hi folks,

Looking for a definitive answer as to whether it is possible to replace the
133 cpu with a 166 cpu. I have read innumerable faqs, some saying yes, some
saying no way. Is this possible and if yes what is the qualifier as to
whether a particular 133 can be upgraded? Thanks.

You can upgrade if your 1400 is equipped with the newer ROMs.
