3400 and non-working VST zip drive

2004-08-08 Thread kaldav
I'd like to make a further clarification of my original post, as many
of you have kindly suggested remedies, but they have already been
tried and not worked and you might have a further idea of I clarify:
Hello,
I have a VST Zip drive for the powerbook 190/5300/3400. When I put
it in the expansion bay of the 5300 running 8.6 it works fine. When
I put it in the 3400 running 9.1, it causes the powerbook to start
up only to a gray screen with a black cursor and not start up any
further and I have to push the Reset button to shut down.
I have downloaded the Iomega software for OS8.6/9. loaded it, and
the problem still occurred.
How can I tell if there is a problem with the connector on the 3400
(as the CD drive works fine) or if there is a software problem
affecting this VST zip drive?
Thanks.
Others kindly suggested:
Try removing all the iomega s/w - I seem to remember that around OS
9 the device was supported natively in the OS install. The Iomega
driver IS part of a MacOS install, as many Macs come with Zips.
The install process will install the Iomega Driver system
extension, whether you have an Iomega device intalled, or not.
OR
Exactly my point, you don't need to download and install extra s/w from
iomega on later Mac OS versions, you already have it installed.
OR
When those first came out, they used a different driver/control
panel... Be sure you have the VST drivernot the Iomega driver.
However, firstly, this start up problem occurred after a clean
install of system 9.1 which contained the Iomega drivers. Inserting
the zip drive froze the computer on start up to a blank gray screen.
Therefore, I downloaded and installed the Iomega drivers for OS 8.69
from the Iomega site and installed them, but the computer still froze
on start up. However, the CD and floppy drives work fine. The zip
disk works fine on the 5300. Could anyone tell me where to get the
VST driver suggested above?
I hope this is more clear.
Thanks.

It is unfortunate that you have received conflicting kind suggestions from
experts, who may or may not have personal experience with systems identical with or
at least similar to yours.

For years I have had three PowerBook 3400c's, all running OS 9.1 and all using VST Zip
drive expansion-bay modules. I have also read repeatedly on this List the myth
about native support by OS 9.1 for Zip drives. With my PowerBook 3400c's sitting
near me at this moment, and their System Folders open, I can assure you that OS 9.1
installed the following:
(1) Applications (Mac OS 9)/Apple Extras/Iomega Folder, which includes Iomega Tools
6.3.1, of 1999 vintage but working flawlessly
(2) System Folder/Extensions/Iomega Driver

There is no need for you to download and install anything else, Iomega or VST. If you
remove the above Iomega items, as one expert' suggested, then no Zip drive modules
will ever work. While I have no specific knowledge about your PowerBook 3400c, or
your Zip drive expansion-bay module, I would suggest that you try the following:
(1) Reset the PRAM once or a few times
(2) Trash the Iomega Driver Preferences file in the Preferences Folder in the System
Folder, and restart

Good luck!

Try hot-swapping the drive in and out while the Pwrbk3400 is running. I have
to do that with mine, otherwise the modules don't seem to want to work. Brad
