Given those options, I can live with the 603e processor the 3400 is stuck with. It's almost unacceptable on the NuBus powerbooks (5300 and 1400) but it's OK on the 3400's PCI architecture. And don't forget batteries. The 3400 uses Li-Ion batteries that are still being sold, often at blowout prices. I picked up 3 Li-Ions from Powermax for $25 ea. and they were all in great shape (2.5-3 hours each). Also, every now and then dealers sell like new 3-packs of the Ni-Mh batteries that are compatible with the 3400/5300/190, recently on sale for something like $10 a pack; even though they don't last as long as the Li-Ion ones, they still work okay in the 3400 and for $10 you might get 5-6 hours worth of charge. The 1400 Ni-Mh batteries are hard to find and/or expensive. So if working on battery is important, the 3400 is a better choice. Chris N.B. as many have noted, the 3400 can be upgraded to a G3/250 by swapping the motherboard with one from a Kanga 3500. This used to be prohibitively expensive, but now 3500 motherboards pop up on ebay, etc. at decent (i.e., $100-ish prices). Heck, I've seen whole Kangas advertised at $200-250, so that's always an option too. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... 3400 or 1400
Hi Listers I am new to this list but not to LEM. I am looking a obtaining a low cost laptop. A G3 looks to be out of my range (price wise) but a 1400 or 3400 look interesting. I would prefer to use a 3400 with its greater ram and screen size but the CPU is not upgradable. The 1400 looks a good upgradable unit but is limited by the size of screen and max 64 ram. Has any one experience of being able to install more than the maximum listed 64 Mb of ram. I think I could live with the smaller screen size but would like to have more ram. If there is any more advice you could pass on to me it would be very helpful. John Abraham, Tavistock, Devon. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I love my 1400c upgraded with a Sonnet 333MHz G3. It is a solid performer. I use it 10+ hours a day for developing, surfing, AIM, and email. The RAM is limited to 64MB. You can use a CF card for virtual Mem which is fast and saves on battery life. I do that when using Photoshop a lot. Most times though I just use virtual mem on the 20 gig drive I installed. It's on par with any clam-shell iBook, minus the 190 MB ram, but gains the 2 pcmcia slots! ---Original Message--- From: JOHN.E.ABRAHAM [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 07/08/03 04:35 PM To: PowerBooks [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: 3400 or 1400 Hi Listers I am new to this list but not to LEM.
