Re: 3400 swap nears end - solved and an OT question.

2005-02-12 Thread Ted Lovejoy
I used to have Lisa Simpson saying "I am the Lizard Queen!" as a
startup sound, so of course the hard drive was named Lizard Queen.
Then there was Lizard Queen 2 and 3. But I lost that sound bite, so
now I name it after the machine: 3400c and 190cs.

Kewl Brian! HFS+ helps. I hope you have partitioned it also. It
saves wear and tear on the drive. The system does not have to scan
as large of an area to find what it needs. So the OS should feel
snappier.

I name my drives for easily remembered characters. Some for
characters in the cartoon series Reboot. Some for Hindu Gods.

It makes it easier to remember what files are on what drive.
Also some are Partitioned and names of partitions assigned in a
conventional terminology from a defunct platform. Thus; "System"
would be for the OS and closely associated utilities. "Apps" would
contain of course application programs which produce new files. (
could also be called Tools)
And "Work" which contains the products of "Apps". This is termed
documents in darkside terms. Finally we have "Play" Whichcontains
games, sound files, player utilities, picture and movie files. Things
mostly for entertainment..

Since I still have a machine from this defunct platform with these
names the Mac HD with these names actually has an "M" before them to
designate
they are on the Mac. Thus; "MPlay"= "Mac Play."

What is hilarious is that a 500 MB drive used to seem huge. And now
I don't bother partitioning anything under 4 GB.

I still have in storage a boxful of brand new IBM 100 MB drives I
once planned to use in an array.

But rapid change makes fools of us all

Before you put much on the drive you might consider reformatting it "
extended" .

That would be HFS+ formatting and allow more files on the disk and
faster searches as it is more efficient.

Thanks, that was a good suggestion. I went through the reload process
and used extended this time. Right off the bat the difference was
obvious, I picked up what seemed like a couple of gigs just loading the
os. Out of 38 formatted I had something like 36 and change left the
first time using normal formatting. Under extended it showed 37 and
change. I forget the numbers exactly but it was a huge difference.
Most noticeable now is the absolute lack of noise from the 3400. The
samsung drive is silent, and much faster. This is a much recommended
change for anyone who wants to tinker. It would have gone much quicker
if I'd remembered that 9.1 won't boot but 8.5 will.

The OT question is : What does everyone name their hard drives and/or
computers on your network? I figure with the creative crowd here in
Powerbooks there might be some pretty neat names for drives/computers
out there. Mine have names such as Waldo, Dude, Bubba, Buddy, Bedmac,
Kathjam, and, my favorite, Bobomb (from the Mario games). Any cool ones
in the ether?

Re: 3400 swap nears end - solved

2005-02-11 Thread Brian Mahoney
Turns out neither 9.1 CD I had would boot. 8.5.1 would, so that's where
I am now. There wasn't much interactivity, only a choice between Mac
standard or Mac extended formats for the drive. I chose standard since I
didn't know the difference. So the drive works, I am back to 80 megs of
RAM and it's sunny here in Toronto, although there will be no hockey
this season it seems.

Thanks to everyone, again.
