Use v.42 bis. The MNP was an early compression standard developed by

When I open the GV icon on the desktop, I can choose a compression type for
the modem: MNP4, V.42, MNP5, V.42bis, MNPIVEC, etc.
Which should I choose (what do they stand for?) or should I click on 'None'.
2. I have a Stylewriter 2500 and the modem plugged in. After I put the

Thanks.

2002-07-30 Thread jwilliams

Well, upon disassembling my pb5300, I checked and discovered
the PRAM battery is good.
I still have a couple of oddities though...

When I plug the AC adapter into the back of the Powerbook, the
machine starts up on it's own without my pressing the power
button.

The monitor settings are not retained from shutdown to startup.
The monitor always comes up with the contrast at some
predetermined level, which I always have to turn down.

I have reset the Power manager as per instructions I've found on
the net.

I'm beginning to think a drive initialization and clean reinstall of
everything might be in order here as I have no idea what kind of
weird software might be floating around on the machine at this
point.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,
JIm W.

Isn't this list great for finding out all the information you need?
I did 'flash' upgrade my GV card. It meant that I downloaded some software
from the GV site, then ran it, so it altered some settings on the modem
card itself to improve the speed from 28.8 to 33.6 (approx).
If you do not want to fiddle with the download, or are worried about
running the updater, or checking to see that you have the correct software
before running the upgrade, then don't do it for a minor speed improvement.
However, that said, it was very easy to do by following the GV instructions
exactly as listed.

Re: 5300 Questions

2001-10-03 Thread MacinNW

Janice ,

I'll answer your questions one at a time.

   1. Is the Powerbook supposed to start up when the power adaptor is
plugged into it? Mine does.

It should not. Even if it is only asleep, it should not start up when the ac
adapter is plugged in. You should have to press the space bar or another key
to awasken it.

   2. One of the batteries (Apple) has been reconditioned with instructions
I read on the list archives, and works well now, but the extra one
(Panasonic) does not appear to ever charge, even when left in overnight.
When I try battery recondition with it, the 5300 goes black, and I have
to restart.

The Battery Recondition should give you a bouncing battery icon on a white
background. When the battery is completely discharged you may have a poorly
redrawn desktop until you restart, but do not unplug the ac adapter until the
battery is fully recharged.

   3. Does anyone know of a place to download simple directions on how to
use the GV PowerPort modem/ethernet card that came with this machine?

Start at www.globalvillage.com Read thru the descriptions of the s/w
downloads you can flash up grade some cards, but read thru __carefully__!!!
IIRC you can damage your card if you use the wrong one or do not complete the
flash upgrade. Since the card was not made by the current owner of the GV
name, you will be SOL. The flash is easy, just make sure you have a good
power source.

I would love to ethernet to my iMac, but am not sure how the card works.
Can it be put in the slot while the machine is running?

Yes, do you have the dongle or cable. it should have a RJ-11 (phone) and a
RJ-45 (ethernet).

Can both ports be used at once?Yes. Both PC card slots and both modem
and ethernet, if your Control Panels are set correctly.

Can the card stay in the slot all the time without hurting the Powerbook?
I would advise against it as it creates too much heat. You'll know it when it
happens the KBand trackpad go wonkie. Do use the legs to raise up the back on
a hard surface.

IIRC it is suggested tht the GV card be used in the lower slot if posssible.

How can I tell which way is right side up on the connector that
goes into the card?

For lack of a better way to describe it, the pretty graphics up and the 50
(?) pin female connector in.

   4. Does anyone have any recommendations on a good place to buy an extra
battery?

Several people on this list will recommend pbparts.com, Dan Monk on the
powerbook list has good PRAM battery prices and fair main battery prices (for
the life of me I can not remember his URL), OWC or Smalldogs occasionally
have specials on them, or macvizions.

   5. What kind of adaptor (i.e. what name do I look for in a catalogue?)
would I buy to insert my SmartMedia camera card into the slot? Can these
cards be used to store data from the Powerbook like you would a hard drive?

I think you will find more people using CompactFlash for that and if no one
here answers that one, drop me a note and I will send you the info for the
PowerList. I can't remember which list has the user that has the story on
that.

What you did not ask is which OS is best, most will agree that OS 8.1 is
where to stop, and I have gone to OS 8.6 with a max of 64Mb of RAM. It will
run 9.1 but it is not worth the memory useage.
