Re: 5300c os, surfing, e-mail word proc...

2003-02-06 Thread John Cate
I wouldn't even think of running any 7.xx versions on it unless I just had a
very small amount of RAM installed. They're all buggy and written almost
entirely in 680x0 code, which just makes it dog-slow on the cacheless 100
MHz 603e installed in a standard 5300. If you have about 24 MB or more, you
can run 8.1 on it, and I feel that's the best OS for a 5300. If you need the
features of 8.6, you can get by with it, but it will slow you down quite a
bit.

Don't even think about OS 9. It takes forever to load and will use up way
too much RAM.

I've had the best results with installing 8.1 and then turning off all the
extensions I didn't need. It takes up about 11 MB of RAM; doesn't boot very
fast but performance is acceptable once you get it going. It's much better
since I upgraded the slow IBM hard disk last week.

5300c os, surfing, e-mail word proc...

2003-02-05 Thread pook la roux
A lot will depend on how much RAM you have and whether
you are using an older hard drive (like me) or a
newer, faster one.

I run 8.6 and I only have 24mb, but almost all I do is
word processing or the like, and even in Word, it's
not that bad. Originally, I got online thru Earthlink
dial up using a 28.8/14.4kbps Megahertz pc card modem.
It was sloow. I recently picked up a
3com/megahertz 56k pc card modem that I like a lot
better. I am plugged in most of the time, so I really
have no useful input on battery life etc. I am also
investigating ethernet via pc card options. I went to
8.6 because one of the programs I used to use required
it. It came to me used loaded with 7.5.
