Re: Fast PowerBook?

2004-02-04 Thread macnifico
Hi again!

Thank you all for your advice and commentaries.
I checked the Kanga and the 1400 side by side.
The Kanga feels faster, thanks to the better video, it has faster screen
redraws. It has better sound, too. Both were running OS 9.1.
One advantage of the Kanga is that I could kludge a USB PC Card to work
on it, but the 1400 can't use USB.
The Kanga is noticeably heavier. But the CD Drive is faster (20x,
against 12x).
I'm still undecided... I do love the 1400, but I think I'll have to
move on.
Where can I d/l some application to compare them?
Would Norton Disk Doctor be enough?
TIA best regards.

Re: Fast PowerBook?

2004-02-02 Thread KG
My guess is that the two would be about equal in speed. The CPU in the 1400c
is going to be faster, but the entire subsystem of the Kanga is much
faster--better graphics, better disk controller, PCI architecture. It's
probably a wash, or very close to it.

The most important factor, for me, would be that I could take the Kanga to
160 MB of RAM, whereas the 1400 is stuck at 64 no matter what you do. Of
course, the Kanga is also a lot heavier, and as someone else mentioned,
Kanga spare parts aren't easy to come by. If the logic board failed, you
might have to settle for a slower 3400 board, while 1400 parts are readily
available.

I'm a happy 3400 user myself, and the Kanga is its big brother, so I may be
biased too...

This is getting off-topic kinda but what the heck. My 128 is wired into the
apartment Ethernet via a device called a Lantronix UDS-10, which has a
modem mode allowing you to dial IP addresses with standard Hayes AT
commands. To connect to my Unix host (a Mac running NetBSD, natch), I just
type ATDT256.256.256.256/23 (insert your address here), and it opens up
a telnet connection that any terminal program can use. This works with
anything with a serial port.

I'm not sure if there's an Ethernet solution for the A500 (I have an A500
myself with a GVP accelerator), but I know that the A1200 accommodates
PCMCIA cards, and there are some with AmigaOS and NetBSD/amiga drivers.

Fast PowerBook?

2004-02-01 Thread macnifico
Hi, everyone!

I have a 1400c with Mac OS 9.1, a Sonnet G3 333 MHz/1 Mb, 64 Mb, 16-bit
Video out card, a 3 Gb Fujitsu HD, and a Global Village 56K
Modem/Ethernet PC Card.
This is my main (and favorite) computer. I use it mainly for internet
browsing, and a little Photoshop editing.
I can get, for a reasonable price, a Kanga, with Mac OS 9.1, a G3 250
MHz/512 K, 48 Mb, internal Video out, a 5 Gb HD, internal Ethernet, and
a MegaHertz 56K PC Card modem (plus the internal 33.6 K).

My question: Would the Kanga is faster for what I use it?
I know it has a faster bus (50 MHz, the 1400 is only 33 MHz), but the
1400 has a faster CPU...
Advantages? Disadvantages? Opinions?
TIA best regards.

This is very similar to mine: a 1400c, also with a G3/333, 60MB of RAM, an
Apple 8-bit external video card, and a 3Com EtherLink III.

This is my main (and favorite) computer. I use it mainly for internet

You didn't post the price, but IMHO the Kanga's only major advantages
over the 1400, besides the better video and bus, is RAM ceiling (you
can go up to 160MB). If it were me, I would probably stick with the 1400.

Hi,
The Kanga's faster form factor and the 1400's
faster cpu may offset each other to the degree that it
might be worth thinking about other issues.

Such as parts. If anything goes haywire on a Kanga,
there's a good chance it will be tough to find a
replacement for it, and if you do, they'll have you by
the you-know-whats. A crucial point could very well
be the availibiliity of replacement batteries, it's
easy to get them for the 1400 - not sure about the
Kanga, might be able to use one from another 'Book,
like maybe the 3400...anyone?. The 1400 is a breeze
to find a new screen, new processor, new keyboard etc.
for. Oh yeah, the 1400's keyboard is supposed to be
much nicer FWIW. One more point for the 1400 - the
Kanga is somehow even heavier...not sure how they
pulled that one off. ;-)

The Kanga probably has better video, in terms of
responsiveness if not resolution, and has more RAM
capacity (though OSX would probably be too much for
the little fella' even if there's a hack available for
installation). 160Mb RAM in the Kanga would make
OS9.1 very happy for sure, though. The Kanga has
built-in ethernet, as well.

I'd stay with the 1400, but I am a happy user of one
so I am biased... ;-)

Best,
David

if there's so many happy old PB users, why is it that I only see the
latest stuff (ibook, AL book, etc.) in the local Starbucks?? I am
already embarrassed to pull out my original Ti. Not to mention my
 beloved 180c.

Heck, I have a Commodore 128 on my desk (granted, next to a dual 1.25GHz
G4, but it's still on my desk). I'm *proud* to unleash my sleek 1400 with
a wacky design on the top cover on an unsuspecting world. The loud custom
top usually gets people to come over and check it out.

You have to go to Cosi instead, where you'll find me

You might find me in a coffee shop with my trusty 1400, if I ever had time to go there.
I too would recomend sticking with the 1400. There is little to gain from making a
switch like the one you're talking about.

Got a pic of your 1400? I have a walnut cover and am especially proud of it.

I have the walnut cover as well, and a few others (my brother-in-law, the
previous owner, really bought out the store), but I liked the one he had
where he added decals to one of the paper inserts for the clear top. The
BIOHAZARD decal is loads of fun. :)
