Re: Mac Portable - Strange Card

Hmmm, that is what I thought, but with or without the "Strange Card" the
"About the Finder" says 5mb. (With the "normal" RAM card in the RAM
slot.) It must need some sort of driver (probably on the crashed HD). It
would be fun to see what it would do!

Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.

Ken,

If I recall correctly you have a (rare) RAM expansion module. The Portable
came with 1 MB RAM standard and 1MB or 3MB expansion cards.
Your Portable should show 4 MB RAM in the Profiler with the card installed.

HTH,

Tobias.

Thanks for the reply. However, I do have the service manual. Understand
about the memory issue for "normal" memory cards. However, this card is
in J12, which is labeled "PDS." The connector is configured much like the
"PDS" slot of an SE (suprise).

In that slot it would have to have some "special" use. Something like an
automatic RAM disk, or some such?

It must need some sort of special driver as it is not seen by the machine
in a normal 6.08 boot.

Get a service manual, as there IS no PDS on a Portable. You may
not have the right sort of RAM (see below)
Paul

Upgrades RAM Expansion - 22
Note: Static and
pseudostatic RAM expansion
cards are available for the
Macintosh Portable. Static
and pseudostatic RAM cards
are not interchangeable. The
1 MB RAM expansion card
must be used with a static
RAM logic board; the 1 and 3
MB pseudostatic RAM cards
must be used with a
pseudostatic RAM logic
board.
1 Note whether the RAM
connector has a notch. If
it does, install a
pseudostatic RAM card.

2 If the RAM connector
does not have a notch,
install the 1 MB RAM
expansion card.

3 Plug the card into the
RAM expansion
connector. (indicates second one from hard drive)

Mac Portable - Strange Card

2002-08-12 Thread KADaggett

This message written: Monday, 12 August 2002 19:54:32 PDT

Obtained my second Mac Portable today ($5). Inside I found an odd card.
In the PDS(?) slot was a card that said (Mac Portable 3mb RAM Card) made
by Sunland Micro Systems. It had no RAM card in the RAM slot on the logic
board and when I finally got enough juice in the battery to get it to
boot, it shows only 1mb RAM. The hard drive was toast (made a LOUD
squealing noise when it finally came on), but I swapped it with a known
good drive from another machine and it booted OK.

Any ideas what this card might be and how to put it to use?

Ken

Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.
