TCP/IP Setup tip (was Re: MacPoET)

While my preference is to use DHCP, the above is fine for a manual
config, IMO, except for the last.

The ending domain, search domain, etc, by whatever that field is
called (it varies depending on which IP stack you use and which OS)
can be VERY useful. It can be left blank, but filling it in is
BETTER.

Most ISPs include the domain name information in their DHCP response,
and your router should simply pass it on to your client computers.
But some cheap routers contain only partial DHCP implementations...
so they don't. If that's the case, put it in yourself.

Here's an example of what it will do for you:
Eudora, my email client, is configured in each of its profiles to
send email out via an smtp server called just "smtp".

My "At Home" TCP/IP configuration is set to use "comcast.net".
Eudora reaches for the server called "smtp" and the IP stack notices
that it's an incomplete domain name, so it automatically adds
".comcast.net". This makes Eudora magically talk to
"smtp.comcast.net".

My "On The Road" TCP/IP configuration is set to use "earthlink.net".
Again, Eudora reaches for just "smtp" and the IP stack automatically
fixes it to be "smtp.earthlink.net".

Automagically switching servers without changing the settings in the
client app (in this case, Eudora)!...

FWIW,
YMMV,
etc,

I second what everyone else said. Get the PPPoE done by the router. If
you have a dumb modem, buy a raouter for $10-20 post-rebate.

PPPoE is too ugly to inflict upon a good machine

Hi,

all you need is control panel TCP.

If you use DHCP on the router set up the TCP like here

http://www.starstream.net/support/mac/tcpip/tcpipos8.htm

Thsi is the easiest way. If you dont have DHCP on the router
then chose:

Configure:Manually

Hi,

I agree with this. As long as your Router has PPPoE function

you should use them. If your router doesn't support PPPoE

you should think about buying one.

Anyway, if you, due to circumstances, want or need to use MacPoET 1.1.1

I can confirm that it is working fine. The configuration is a little

unusual, because AppleTalk is used somehow as sort of "loopback"

interface. A small guide (German only) is here

http://www.netic.de/support/dsl/macos/

But its little to read. The most is clear through the pictures.

Correct.

Let the router be the DHCP server, and set your TCP/IP control panel for

that mode. The router will act as the server for LaserWriters, hard-wired
Macs,

wireless macs (if the router has that capability), etcetera.

Its a lot more reliable to use the bare-bones TCP/IP control panel and a

decent Router, than to use MacPoet and no router at all.

Having the router be the DHCP server provides this flexibility.

The latest DSL modems from SpeedStream, and others, include a router
function, anyway.

I have switches in several locations, and UTP everywhere, so I can simply
plug in any desktop or laptop Mac, and get to the net instantly.

Having the router be the DHCP server provices this flexibility.
