Re: Making a .sea file in windows

2004-01-22 Thread Josh Watson
You could try setting your PC up with Basilisk II, the Mac Emulator (you'll
need an older rom though) from http://gamma.nic.fi/~lpesonen/BasiliskII/ .
You can read and write mac floppies with it and transfer files from your
PC's hard disk to mac floppy disks, and obviously compress them or span them
over disks on the way. I always found this was the most reliable way of
doing it once I'd got Basilisk up and running, which can be a bit tricky. It
works a treat on any modern Windoze/Linux PC, though.

Alternatively, you could buy a CompactFlash reader for the pc and mac and a
card (about £45 for a USB reader, PCMCIA reader for the 5300 and a 128Mb
card here). These are brilliant for copying big files.

Hope this helps,
Josh

PCs don't have type and creator code. That's a function of the Mac's resource fork. I
like to use Creator Changer but there's a bunch of utils out there that can do the
same thing. It gives the file the correct icon and tells the Mac which program to use
to open the file.

Strike three! If you've got broadband for the PC then by all means, get a ethernet
card in that Mac and get it on-line too!

That's because there's no resource fork. StuffIt on the Mac will still be able to
open it. Do you have a modem on that Mac? Download StuffIt Expander from Aladdin's
website.

No zip disk on the pc but I have one that's working on the Mac. It's SCSI
tho and it won't hook to the PC without a new card put in there

On the Mac or on the PC?

The time before I used a simple mini hub and connect

No Ethernet card in the Mac, but even then unless the programs I need to use
it are already on the Mac I wouldn't be able to do it without finding them
all on a floppy

I have the CD Burner on the PC but no cd on the 5300 as of yet

Broadband: Yes. Way to connect the Mac to the net: no. Thanks to some recent
posts I'm aware of iCab so that will probably be my browser of choice due to
limited space/ram/speed

I would still need stuffit on the Mac to open it would I not? I tried making
a sit file on the PC and when put in the Mac it ends up with an Icon over it
that just says 'PC'

Re: Making a .sea file in windows

2004-01-22 Thread Tom Roth

Mr. Cranky,

I've switched files between Macs and PC many times. The last time was the easiest. I
just used a PC formatted zip disk and copied the files from the PC onto it and then
put that disk in my Mac which read it just fine. You'll have to assign the correct
type and creator code but that's no big deal. The time before I used a simple mini
hub and connect both computers up to it. Using a little FTP server program on the Mac
I was able to login to it from the PC side and FTP my files across. Just be sure to
use the right FTP mode. If you have a CD burner on the PC just make a Joliet
formatted CD and using the Macintosh Joliet extension (downloadable from somewhere on
the Internet) you can read that disk on the Mac. Don't use ISO9660 format unless all
of your PC files are 8.3 filenames. You'll still have to assign type and creator
codes as the PC doesn't have that information.

If you have an email account that includes web space you might be able to upload the
files via FTP to that space (within the limits set by your ISP) and then download them
back down from the Mac. I wouldn't recommend doing that unless you have broadband
though.

If you want to use StuffIt you should be able to make a .sit file instead of an exe
but you still have to move the file to the Mac.

Good Luck!

You need DAVE, by Thursby sofware. I just got an older edition and put my
iMac DV/400 OS 9.1 in touch with my wife's PC XP/pro. Easy deal once you
have DAVE. I bought v 2.5.1 which would NOT do 9.1, but there is a free
update download to 2.5.2, which did the trick.

Making a .sea file in windows

2004-01-22 Thread Mr Cranky
In my ongoing quest to get my 5300cs working and be able to use my net
connected PC to the 5300cs which is not and won't be until I am able to
transfer files I thought that maybe what I needed to do to get them from PC
to Mac was make a .sea file. I've been unable to do this so far as when I
try to make as when I try to make a self extracting file it makes .exe files
automatically and I can't find an option to have it make a ,sea file in
Stuffit Deluxe. Does anyone have any ideas on this?
