Been following this thread. Nothing specific, but this is what works on my
PB540c/32/500/OS7.6.1/GV PP500 Mercury 19200
Control Panel - Powerport 500 v 2.08
Extension - Powerport 500 Tool v 2.08
FreePPP v2.62
Other than an occasional dropped connection everything works fine.
BTW FreePPP works with OS8

AppleTalk is set to Ethernet, TCP/IP was tried on PPP and Ethernet settings

  The 540c's running MacOS 8.1.

I've got a 8.1 540c with a GV powerport mercury, and I've been having
the same symptoms. I've found that if I click connect again after
getting the in use notice, I get a different error message-- this
one about not getting the correct response from the modem- please
check connections. Oh yeah-- it's not too difficult to check what
kind of modem it is, if you're careful and have a #8 torx screwdriver.
The modem card is underneath the memory expansion card, which is
underneath the middle metal cage underneath the keyboard. Two screws,
a bit of fiddling, and you're there. Mine was marked on the top.

I've tried the express modem software recommended by the person with
the swell name (Dana, but not me) but my startup freezes on the
express modem extension. I looked around a bit on the web, and
apparently my mercury is a software modem, meaning that it uses the
540c processor to handle the regular modem tasks-- so it needs pretty
specific software to run it. Global Village Fax Center 2.5.5, I
think. It'll probably slow programs down a bit.

I have an external modem that works, but it would be nice to be
able to use the internal modem once in a while-- even at 19.?k.

Your modem should be the Global Village PowerPort Mercury model, if your
PowerBook is a U.S. Model. When I got my 540 used, I couldn't get the
modem to work. apparently someone had done a clean OS install and
deleted the modem software. I managed to find the disk images for the
modem. If you need them I can email the images to you.
I hope no one sees this as piracy, since the software is obsolete, not
supported by GV anymore, and not available on their site.

Try other modems, especially with Express in their names, or try the Global
Village Platinum or Bronze modem settings. These worked for me on 230s and
100 series as well as 5300s. Maybe Apple used another. Also, check modem
scripts or other modem extensions. I needed an Express Modem extension to
make modems work on my 230s. Good luck.

No, it probably isn't. You need the GV powerPort 500/duo software,
which someone on the list probably has.
