Unlike the PG 500 supply, which has four wires, two for powering and two
for charging, the later "45 Watt" power supply, used with just about
every machine from the PB 1400 to the Wallstreets, has only two wires.

Powering/charging functions are controlled within the PBs themselves,
using the single voltage as a source.

Lack of capacity under all loading conditions explains the behavior of
this specific unit.

Apple provides no testing procedure for these supplies, save substitution
for a known good one.

Actually, testing is not as easy as it might appear, as the testing must
be done under a simulated load.

The nameplate capacity of the supply is 24 volts at 1.87 amps, which is
44.8 watts.

A 12.83 ohm resistor as a load would fully load the supply. However the
closest standard value is 15 ohms.

A 15 ohm, 50 watt, wire-wound resistor as a simulated load would load the
supply to 1.6 amps, which may be a good enough test.

With this load applied, you should be able to measure about 24 volts
across the load resistor. Significantly less than that, and the supply is
presumed to be defective.

PB 3400 AC adaapter

2004-06-30 Thread Volk (contractor)
Good morning, I am experiencing a problem I've never had before, I have
an 45 watt AC adapter for a PB 3400 that will power up computers (
checked on multiple machines with different batteries) but will not
charge the batteries. I've left the machines powered up overnight and
the supply is not overheating. I have 2 other adapters, one a PB 3400
original and the other a Madison Line, both cause the machine to
function fully.

Thanks
Roger
