PowerBook 145 trade

2004-07-21 Thread VicNaz1
I surely have something I could trade but honestly Dick, a powerbook with a
good modem and a CD-ROM drive set up to do light duty internet is worth a lot
more than that 145. If we did a swap you'd probably owe me like $60. Are you OK
with that?

To be honest I'm not sure if I still even have the PB around here or not.
I'll check, but today I'm going to be getting ready for Kfest. (Those of
you who remember the Apple II might remember that little computer
convention. :) )

Powerbook 145

2004-07-18 Thread Howard R. Katz
My PB 100 series machine needed to have a modem card installed in it when
it was still operable. And I added ethernet using an Ethernet/SCSI
adapter. You might want to look on ebay for both items. :)

It was a nice machine, but I got tired of the greyscale screen. The PB
520c's color screen was a major improvement. :)

TCP/IP over localtalk can be done, but it's not DHCP; it's MacIP
(over localtalk). You need to be running an additional software on
the LCII. Doing this from the G3 would be harder unless it's one
with a localtalk serial port (if so, then do it from the G3 would be
my recommendation).
The MacIP to IP function and the LocalTalk Bridge function do not
need to be on the same computer. You can route IP to MacIP over
EtherTalk on the G3 and then change to MacIP over LocalTalk on the
LCII.

See IPNetRouter from www.sustworks.com, there is also a much more
expensive solution that works a little better from ... Vicom;
VicomSoftRouter IIRC. IPNetRouter has some bugs in it but they
should only show up if you try and use the MacIP connection from a
Newton Messagepad :) for desktops it should be OK. IIRC IPNR has a
long demo so you can futz with it for a while.
IPNR has always been good for me but have never used it with a Newton
that I can recall.

Whether you use IPNR or Vicom you need to configure it to work with
the existing router. My router didn't work with IPNR as a separate
subnet. I had to configure IPNR as a NAT router so the MacIP
addresses were masqueraded behind it. I don't have any hard data but
I suspect a lot of the inexpensive hardware routers are like this.

You would then connect via MacIP option on the 145. I think the 145
should have that capability.

Networking on a Powerbook 145

2004-06-14 Thread Terence Dennis Sherman
Hi all.

In the interest of the "because I can" spirit, I am attempting to network
my Powerbook 145. I've gotten as faras to get it all localtalked and
appletalking to the other Macs, but I want to get it on the internet,
i.e., be able to telnet. Currently, the network looks something like this:

(internet)--(router/DHCP server)--(G3)
|
  (Mac LC III)===(powerbook 145)

-'s are ethernet/cat5
='s are localtalk.

The LC III is a localtalk bridge, and, thusly, I can see the powerbook in
the chooser from the G3. Hoever, I would like to get the PowerBook a
TCP/IP addy. I cannot use Open Transport, as I do not have enough RAM to
install it, so I'm cursed with MacTCP 2.0.6.

I've heard that I can get TCP/IP over localtalk with MacTCP, but it fails
to obtain an IP address from the DHCP server like the other computers.
I've always failed to get MacTCP to work, so I'm asking for help this
time.

Peace and Love,
Terry

That's a newer power supply for the 180c and 160c. The other
machines in the 100 series (excluding the 100) only require a 7.5V 2A
supply but they can work with the 3A.

Ah. I had been through Apple's site, but was unable to find any reference
as to its output. Thank you very much for the information.

I believe that it uses the same one as the 150/165/170. They are labeled:

7.5V, 3A.

Drop a line off-list if you want one "reasonably priced."
