Re: 3400c Mac OS 7.6.1 - Slow Window Redraws

2004-03-18 Thread Daniel De L'eau
Would 9.2.2 be feasable on a 5300? Anyone using it?

I'm thinking with a max RAM of 64MB that it would be difficult.

Actually I'm running 9.2.2 on my 3400c 240mhz ram maxed out and it's
quite a bit zippier than 8.6 or 9.1. The finder is much, much faster.
I would recommend at least trying 9.2.2 if you can.

Of course its perfectly possible.

However in my opinion it would be absolutely terrible. Why would you want
to do this?

I tried it twice on both a 3400/240 and a 200 with clean installs and
it was great EXCEPT that it reliably crashed on shut-down 4 times out
of 5. So back to 9.1 for me.

I never tried any of the cardbus cards with 7.6.1, and I'm pretty sure
they wont work.

If you're 3400c is like your main or only machine then maybe you should
stick with OS 9. however if you really want to make it seem fast and
you have other machines to use instead of the 3400c I very much so
enjoy system 7.6.1.

Its good for when i take the 3400c to starbucks or my college library
or somewhere i feel another computer user may be interested in finding
out what it is I'm using. System 7.6.1 keeps it fast and impressive
feeling (speed wise).

Re: 3400c Mac OS 7.6.1 - Slow Window Redraws

2004-03-14 Thread KG
 I have a 5300c, and have run 7.6.1, 8.1, and 8.6 on it. 7.6.1 can feel
quite slow, and I think that it's due to Apple's poor emulation of
non-power PC code. I purchased Connectix SpeedDoubler and it completely
changed the way 7.6.1 felt; it was MUCH faster in opening windows and
copying and everything else they claim speeddoubler does. It's an older
version so I wasn't able to use it on OS 8.x, but I can tell you that
running Quicken 2000 (a power-pc native app) felt faster with 8.6 than with
8.1, maybe because 8.6 is completely power-pc native.

A 5300c, if it has enough RAM, is definitely faster running OS 8.x than 7.x
unless you have Speed Doubler. In my experience, the best combination for a
5300 is to run OS 8.1 with Speed Doubler 8 installed. The problem is that
Apple's emulator needs an L2 cache to function properly, and of course,
that's something a 5300 doesn't have. SpeedDoubler, among other things, is a
rewrite of some parts of the emulator to make it function better, and is
invaluable on a 5300. It will help a 3400 running OS 7.6 or even 8.1, but
nowhere near to the extent it helps a 5300 (or a cacheless 1400c/117).

The ideal setup for a 3400 would probably be to run 8.6 on it, but I've
settled on an optimized 9.1 install because unlike Dan, my 3400c/240 is by
far the best laptop I own, and I need to make Hooper jump through hoops.

I can't figure out if Kanga supports 7.6 or not; different sources disagree
on that subject. Oh well, one of these days I guess I'll just buy one and
find out for myself.

It is very fast. It feels great to have it running as fast as it was
when it was the fastest notebook computer the world has ever seen

I am actually surprised that 8.1 doesn't run faster than 7.6 on a 3400 with
maxed-out RAM. I have tried them both on a 5300 and 8.1 always seemed more
responsive to me, so I kept it there. I guess with the L2 cache, a 3400 can
emulate old code faster than it can execute the code in 8.1.

I wonder how fast 7.6 runs on a Kanga G3? I bet it would laugh at it.

I still prefer using 8.6 because, while it takes five minutes to boot, and feels sluggish with opening windows and such, it crashed far less often than 7.6, thus more than making up for the time it takes to boot. It just sleeps most of the time anyway, so the booting thing doesn't bother me.

Anyway, try SpeedDoubler!

Re: 3400c Mac OS 7.6.1 - Slow Window Redraws

2004-03-11 Thread KG
Why would 7.6.1 redraw slower than 8? Especially since everything else
 runs much faster.

I would suspect that 7.6.1 just doesn't do QuickDraw acceleration as well as
8.1 would.

Running 7.6, I bet your 3400 feels as fast as a G4. I could never do it,
though; I like the features in OS 9 too much.

It is very fast. It feels great to have it running as fast as it was
when it was the fastest notebook computer the world has ever seen

OS9 running on the 3400c wasn't worth the slowness and memory hogging.

System 7 I've found to be able to do everything that I want when I'm away
from my OSX machine, including 802.11b networking, AIM, MS Office 98,
photoshop, email, and web browsing (via iCab). Each new release of iCab
is better and better.

I don't expect my 3400c to do anything amazing, so I don't feel like
using OS9 anymore. If I need to do anything that system 7 cant do I have
my G3 (huzza!!)
