I run 8.6 on my 5300 and it works great. How much ram do you have? I am
pretty sure that I've heard of people running 9.1 on the machine, although
I'm not entirely certain, and have never tried it personally. I've heard
most recommendations for 8.5 / 8.6 on the 5300 though.  Mine is extremely
stable and reasonably responsive with 40 MB Ram, a 6GB Fuji Drive, Ram
Doubler, and SpeedDoubler installed. I have the CS model, btw.

9.1 ran ok on my 5300. But I like the way 8.6 with ram doubler and speed 
doubler run. Also it seems that all the junk from M$ slowed down my 
5300. So I've trashed it and it seems to have a slight speed boost.

It is probable that an 8500- compatible version of 9.1 was installed. What
you needed to do is do a custom install and choose the version of Mac OS
that will boot any computer. Then 9.1 should work normally on a 5300.

That said, 9.1 is too much for it. It will be slow as hell, (100MHz 603e and
no L2 cache, plus 'tiny memory') so what I would recommend is OS 8.1. It
seems to be a good balance between performance and features. On my 5300c I
found that even OS 8.5 was too much.
