I noticed what sounds like the same kind of discoloration on my NewerTech
G3-upgraded 1400 a few years ago, but it's been running like a champ for
years. (loud sounds of knocking on wood heard in background)

If it was AC only, then it would be a loose AC plug
 on the
motherboard. If you are comfortable taking the
 powerbook apart, I
suggest removing the CPU and RAM and reseating it.

hhhm...That makes sense, in that I could have
jarred something loose while carrying it around -
which I do constantly. anyway...
I built it from parts and feel very comfortable
unbuttoning it once more. Thanks very much for the
suggestion, I'll try that tonight. 8^)

If reseating doesnt work, I would try swapping CPUs and RAM and see
if the problem persists. While it could be an internal trace flaw in
the motherboard (which isnt too expensive to get a new mobo), try the
simple stuff first.

Ok.

I took it apart and discovered discoloration on the
top of the top RAM module from the heat sink coming in
contact with it - which struck me as being extremely
not-cool. I reseated the RAM modules and checked that
the top was nestling itself properly in the space
provided for it by the heat sink - it was. I guess
that the last time I took it apart they went back
together in a funny way, and as soon as the heat sink
touched the RAM module - ZAP! Weird.

The long and short of it is that everything works
perfectly now, and you can consider this e-mail your
"I owe you an hour of Tech Support" certificate. ;-]

It happens on both AC and battery, actually.
