So in the same vein, what was your first PowerBook? t'wos a PowerBook 150, bought for my girlfriend to write her great novel on. i then got a 540c off eBay... the PB150 then started playing up, firstly a munted disk drive and then trackball problems, so she got the 540c. I then got a Newton 2100MP and have been happy ever since... it does everything the PB does and more! (well, kind of...) Ben. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Your first PowerBook
Mine was a used 145, which I did a lot of work on. I rebuilt the battery, built another battery pack to plug in (still have no software to get rid of the damn warning messages), maxed the RAM (hahaha 8MB), jammed in an 250MB IBM HD, and replaced the modem board. Man, it rocks, I use it all the time: good apps, I LOVE the trackball, I love it's solid feel, I love that vintage of software - powerful apps with less than 1 MB footprints (kids today can't believe it, and yet, this was only one decade ago). Re: Your first PowerBook
Hi some people are just lucky i guess g3 My first powerbook was two to be exact i got a 5300c and a 2300c buy swapping a P3 laptop both needed work and i used them alot at first then i built up my collection bit by bit. The best powerbook that i have owned was the 550c that i had but i sold that to a friend who had the money for the upgrades it could use and i just recently got a powerbook 190 cs to keep with the 5300 feel as i really like that book (always on the look out for a 5300c./ce) but my main is a 3400 always looking for a kanga board also (hint). i also always keep a duo my current is a 230. Re: Your first PowerBook
It was a semi-functioning 5300cs bought off eBay in a fit of ignorant enthusiasm. The seller listed its defects but also claimed to know very little about Macs so I assumed (after years of jollying along a series of yard sale desktop Macs) that getting it going would be no great trick. This cheery assumption was wrong, but the episode taught me a lot, and not at much expense either, especially after I eventually found a Swap Lister who wanted it for parts. The 5300c that replaced it (also eBay) now does everything it's asked -- thanks to lessons learned from the first PB, and also to lots of help from various members of this list. Hmm. I may give that a try as well - the only two applications I need to run on it are gcc and emacs, so if they work I'm all set. -Leigh On Tuesday, December 10, 2002, at 03:10 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Leigh Honeywell [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I'll be posting soon with the results of the Linux experiment - the 170 isn't on the list of supported systems, but it's worth a try... It's on NetBSD's list, if you're not too attached to Linux. It looks as though they even got the X-Window system to work! The PB170 I had was my first, and so far the only one with an FPU (Duo 230, 250, and PB 540C are the others). Re: Your first PowerBook
Awww... That's such as sweet idea! My very first PowerBook... it's the 170 that sits in a place of honor in our dining room. That thing just plain rocks, and we used it for all sorts of things before I got the 1400cs, mostly writing projects, but games too. I can't give it up. I have a friend who has a 180 that he just can't part with tho he's graduated to a fast li'l G4 laptop now... He wrote lots and lots of his first works, screenplays, etc. on that machine and can't bear to part with it. I feel the same way. My 170 is the only machine in the house that will run ShufflePuck Cafe with sound and I love the trackball on it (wish sometimes the 1400 had that instead of the pad). In the end I ended up with a 280c, which was the first functional Powerbook I've ever owned :) Still use it today, as my main laptop. Love the thing. Still get complimented on it when I'm out with it, people don't believe you can get them on eBay for $20-40 ;) I even get an hour and a half or so battery life out of it. My first book was a 5300cs, which incidentally was the first computer I ever bought for myself, at the ripe old age of 14 :) After 3 long and arduous years, I have migrated to a 2300c and now a 1400c/G3 333MHz that I'm ever so happy with.
