That's a simple power manager reset, which is typically needed after the
IBR-Emmpathy polka needed to ressurect batteries.

It is in TIL 14449, available at Apple's web site (which covers all powerbooks
and ibooks). For the 540 the procedure is:

 1. Remove the AC adapter and the battery.
 2. Let the PowerBook sit without power connected for 3-5 minutes.
 3. Simultaneously press and hold Command-Option-Control-Power On for 5-10
seconds.
 4. Reinstall the battery and, if necessary, reconnect the AC adapter.

Re: desktop in order (Desktop Printing)

2001-08-31 Thread Josef and Guilaine Moffett

Hi there,

Just a note to the group to say thanks.

I've just been away for a while (a week) and came back to find my inbox
teeming with replys to my powerbook battery problem. Just to let you know...
The emmpathy 2.1 programme combined with the intelligent battery updater did
the trick. There's still errors, and the apple inteligent battery updater
still refuses to recognise the batteries, but they now charge again and give
me a good 3 hours running time.

So thanks to all those who posted answers to the problems with the 540c
battery problems, and thanks also to those who replied direct to me with
copies of emmpathy. And to anyone else out there with the same problem, I
found that I had to use the Apple Intelligent Battery Updater first (even
though it gave an error) before Emmpathy could see the batttery the first
time. After that it was just a matter of time while they charged.

Of course, now I have a different problem. The batteries keep the thing
going - even letting me restart, but they don't let me start without a power
cable. Not the end of the world, but still. I suspect that it may have
something to do with my pram. I am ordering a new pram now, and will install
it and keep you all informed as to my success.

Thanks again for all the help.
JOE

Thanks - now down to an all-time low of 2 desktop icons! I didn't even know
that the Desktop Printing enhancement could be turned off.

Re: desktop in order

2001-08-29 Thread Matt14789

On a sidenote, you can also get rid of some program aliases, that you might
have, off the desktop and stick them on the Apple Menu. This not only cleans
up the desktop, but the programs are then always arranged in alphabetical
order on the menu making them simple to organize. I do this on both my PB
3400c and my Windows PC.

With successful moving, tweaking and deleting, I have managed to have *only*
3 icons on my PC desktop (if you care: My Computer, Trash, and Network
Neighborhood - which if deleted totally screws up the computer so I've left
it there), and 3 on my PowerBook (Macintosh HD, Trash, printer).

BTW, does anybody know how to delete the default Printer icon from the
desktop? I'm running OS 7.6.1 and every time I try to trash the icon my Mac
tells me that there MUST be a Default printer icon there and automatically
puts one back on the desktop. I -really- don't like unnecessary desktop
icons !

My dad recently gave many presentation from his pismo powerbook, and

just so, and changing the resolution rearranges it. Is there any way to
 have
the desktop revert to its original arrangement after the resolution is
   changed back? Thanx.

Another idea is to put the icon just off the edge of the desk, where it is
not seen. If you ever need it use the Finder to locate it and drag and drop
it from the found list to the desktop.

I have use the Apple Menu Items trick for sometime now. It is great.
