Re: how much ram is enough for 8.6 on a 3400

2003-08-26 Thread KG
I conquer with the person below. 48 MB RAM is plenty for basic use in 8.6.

However, maxing the 3400 in RAM is only $80 or so at OWC. So if you can
afford it, go for it. If not, I was still able to do tons to work w/ 48
ram
 when I had my 3400.

I'd agree with all that. If you're not going to do anything really intensive
and you're happy with OS 8.6, you don't really need to go all the way to 144
MB on it. But it really can't hurt, and it will definitely help if you ever
decide to upgrade to OS 9.1. The main reason I suggested it is that I
suspect you plan on keeping that 3400 for a while, and as time passes and
everything becomes more of a RAM-sucker, maxing it out might keep that old
PowerBook alive a while longer.

OTOH, I use mine with VM off and RAMGauge to show how much free RAM I have
at any given time, and I can't ever remember dropping under 40 MB, even
though I'm running OS 9.1.

Good luck, and let us know what you ended up with!

IMHO, you won't need to completely max out the ram to
get dramatic improvements even in 8.6 (unless you are
doing something really intensive.) our 3400/180 runs
on 48 and it handles word processing apps and online
tasks pretty well. Our 3400/200 has 80, I do image
processing, webdesign and go online with it, as well
as play with a few diversion programs. Now, we do use
ram doubler. YMMV, but I haven't been hungering after
ram since we installed 64 in the 3400/200.

About online speed -- get a good 56k pc modem card and
make sure you have an effective modem script for it.
I get 5bps pretty regularly on either 3400 on a pc
card modem with a v.90 script. This blows the doors
off my 56k desktop modems which rarely get much over
 4. I thought it was just my phone lines, but
apparently not. I am not using Modem Magic, btw, and
I've been curious about whether that might help boost
the desktops' bps since I've seen such nice speeds
from the powerbooks using the same phone lines.

 Help!!!

I just acquired a PB 3400c which has 16MB of
 built-in RAM - totaling 64MB
with help of virtual memory coming from my 4.0 GB
 internal hard drive.

Offline and Online (browsing the web with Apple's
 now defunct Cyberdog
2.0 PPC browser) is so darn very very very very very
 very very slow.

should I get more memory and max-out to 144 MB? Or
 should I download and
use more mainstream browsers like Netscape or IE.
 If so what version
should I get? I am running OS 8.6
