Does any lister know whether there is a conflict between Os 8.6 and I.E
5.1.6? I can't launch I.E under O.S 8.6. The launch process is never
completed. The computer freezes, making a strange buzzing sound.
If it's just with browsers (and lousy ones at that) that give your HD
the buzz, then I would suspect that the IE and Netscape are trying in
vain to access their cache, madly emptying it to make room for your new
pages, or having terminal difficulties with Flash. Try increasing the
cache and make a habit of emptying/deleting it after each long surf
session.

IE will no longer be supported by Microsoft. I would suggest you use
iCab anyway. You can set iCab's prefs to delete the cache and the
history files upon closing and their browser for PPC Macs is quite nice.

Good heavens! Is the "machine gun" back??? [For relative newcomers to the
Mac, WAY back in the days of the original Macs (128k, 512k, MacPlus), a
runaway pointer could easily march across system memory and often the first
thing it would hit was the RAM being used to buffer the sound. The machine
would make a rapid stuttering that was called the 'machine gun'.
Occasionally a useful diagnostic...]

I'd run whatever your favorite disk checking utility is and reinstall IE.
However, first of all, does it happen only on one particular site? My
experience is that if it weren't for browsers, I probably wouldn't have had
a single hang/freeze/crash in the last several (perhaps as many as five)
years. Never forget that the Web is the great equalizer, which really means
that any nitwit that *thinks* they can program JavaScript or Java can
proudly post their buggy code, which will promptly crash your browser. So,
if it's only a single site, then it's the site that's causing the problem.
Otherwise, try the advice in the first sentence of this paragraph and see
where that leaves you.

yes I had a problem with 5.1.6 and 5.2 but not on the powerbook - so
maybe its not the same ?

If the strange buzzing noise only occurs when the computer is really
busy (lots of big memory apps) then it's likely just normal disk
activity associated with a lot of VM activity. In this case the 128 mb
ram will solve the problem.

If the noise doesn't go away after installing the added memory, then
I'd suspect a failing HDD.

ORIGINAL MESSAGE

1. On one side of my powerbook there is a receptacle for my floppy and i
imagine that's where the cdrom drives resides too. Now, on the opposite
side of the power book is another receptacle with a small opening
(compared to the floppy receptacle on the opposing side), what is this
second receptacle used for? A few ideas are coming to mind but I'd
somebody who knows to clear the air for me.

MY FIRST ANSWER

1. That is the ADB port, you connect your external keyboard and mouse
there, or my QuickCam, that takes its power from it, as did some old
33.6 Kbps Supra external modems.

==0

THE LOGICAL ANSWER FROM centurytel:

The other side should be just big enough for the PCMCIA cards that you can
get for your computer - such as ethernet and modem cards

Of course! Silly me! I read "small opening" but forgot "floppy like".
I stand corrected.

That's what I suspected, but wasn't sure. Some kind gentleman sent me the Apple link
to 3400 manuals ( I don't have one).
I don't have enough money to buy the powerbook I want (the 17 inches G4) so I'll
usb/firewire to my 3400. I will also bump up the ram to 144 while I salivate over the
G4!

Hi yes you are right about the pcmcia port but the adb port on the 3400
is on the side just before the rear leg and is covered by a little door
so thats where the confusion is.

I think he is actually asking about the PCM port, the slot, not the ADB
which is on the back...

The slot is for various adaptors, from ethernet to audio. It's the
Powerbook equivalent of a PCI slot in a desktop Mac.

Am I right?

You may wish to download Apple manuals for the PowerBook 3400c, which tell all about
the expansion-bay and PCMCIA slots.
