Why go nuts? Both Speed and Ram Doubler can frequently be found on eBay. Version 8
doesn't seem to be there at the moment, but I'm sure it will come up soon. You can
set up an automatic search and be notified via email when it gets listed.

Thanks to all for your advice, and help getting the 8.1.2 update: all is
now well though it took a while. Even with the update no applications would
run with Speed Doubler installed, but as I was about to turn the floppy into
a coaster the Norton Tools CD that I'd just bought arrived, and the
Antivirus found and corrected an infection (on the locked commercial disk,
is nothing immune?). So I installed and updated the program again, and now
it seems to be working fine.

Ciao,

Victoria

I'm looking for version 8 as it supported 68k. Version 9 is PPC only - and that
doesn't work very well on a PB540c ;'>

You're right, though, not easy to find anymore. Couldn't be bothered

Victoria,

I even run it on Wallstreet/Lombard when booting into 8.6. No conflicts.
Ensure you're at version 8.1.2, as 8.0 and 8.0.1 were very buggy.

It's possible that if you ran, say, QuicKeys or some obscure extension,
it may conflict, but I've never encountered any using it on a _lot_ of
Macs. Connectix build good software (no affil.). I even paid the full $69
price when it came out, and now it see it for $1 :-(

On this topic, there is no question that SD 8 doubles and in some cases
3x the performance of the Finder and app launching on the 5300 and 1400.
Try, for e.g., a Word 5.1 or 98 launch with and w/out SD 8 on. The
difference is dramatic. Try opening a Finder window with a large # of
files and folders. Again, the window drawing acceleration is dramatically
better. My 5300/100 was unbearable w/out SD and dealers evan began
packaging SD with the 5300s and 1400/117s for free. I bought it straight
after my 5300 purchase.

Immediately after posting a request for advice on SpeedDoubler 8 (which
won't work on a PB 5300 with OS 8.9.1) I learned that the (free) 8.1.2
upgrade is needed to make it compatible. There are lots of download links

can I get it?

Thanks again,

I've heard of all sorts of random conflicts and odd things under 8.5+
with SD8. On the other hand, I've mostly heard that its advantages were
largely incorporated into the OS by 8.5. SD 1.x was brilliant on System
7.1, makes it run much like 8.1 (multithreaded finder, etc) and such.
I'm not entirely sure of it's use on more than 8.1 or so though.

SpeedDoubler 8 conflicts?

2002-08-27 Thread victoria brandon

All you experts who have BTDT:

Has anyone encountered conflicts with SpeedDoubler 8 under OS8.x? I bought
it on eBay in hopes of pepping up my PB 5300c (running OS 8.5.1) -- the
consensus seemed to be that it would be just the ticket. It installed
normally, but (a) clicking in any part of the "Desktop Pictures" folder
turned the Finder icons and menu bar a nearly opaque green, and (b) no
applications whatever would run while it was active. I suspected an
extension conflict (the GV combined modem/ethernet card seemed a likely
suspect), but the problems persisted even when SpeedDoubler was the only
active extension, though fortunately they corrected themselves as soon as it
was turned off.

So I tried to install SD on my desktop 7600 (under OS 8.6), but that machine
was too smart to swallow it at all, giving instead a "Bad Disk" error
message. Disk First Aid says the disk itself (the original Connectix locked
floppy) is fine, and the eBay seller assures me she's used it with complete
success.

Any suggestions? SpeedDoubler is certainly something I can live without
indefinitely, but does offer some desirable features and it would be nice to
be able to use it if possible.

TIA,
Victoria
