Word 5.1 is compatible with newer things, in fact if you get the free
plugins from Microsoft it will read the newest Mac and PC versions.

Explain?

You can download and install the "Microsoft Word 97, 98, and 2000
Converter for the Macintosh" which allows MS Word 5/6 to read Word
97/98/2000 files, which also means that it will read almost all files
created by Word 2001/2003/2004/etc., too.

To find the file, go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads and search
for "word 5.1".

Well, I've decided to go with Nisus Writer, for now. I'm still looking into
getting a copy of Mariner Write, but it was easier to find Nisus in a pinch.
If anyone has the link to the info for Mariner, send it to me, because I'm
still looking for a good program to replace my well-loved Word 5.1.

Thanks for the help,
Caleb

Go on the Mariner Write users board at their main site and request Mariner
Write 2.0.5. Can't go wrong. I love Nisus 4.1.6 but it has a fatal flaw of
not converting and carrying over linked paragraph styles, even as Word 6 or
RTF -- bad news if you're into multi-paragraph styled documents. Ditto
Word Perfect 3.5. Also Nisus Express in OSX really doesn't like Nisus
Classic files (go figure!). These two are excellent programs, but I can't
swallow their conversion shortcomings -- important nowadays unless you're a
hermit. MW 2.0.5 is around 80% Word 5.1 in functions, very intuitive, and
converts cleanly to MW 3.7 (my primary WP now) and visa versa and does pure
RTF conversions. MW support is great and sometimes you even get their Prez
on the line, so that's real touching the user base! So do check them out.

WordPerfect 5.1 is a good "bridge" format. At the college I work at we
still get a lot of students who have MS Works at home, and want to use
their files on the Word versions we have at the college. MicroSoft
doesn't have for a lot of its versions built-in translators for it's own
products. However EVERYONE's programs, it seems, can read out to, and
read in from, WP 5.1. We tell people to save to that format for
portability. :)

I'm running Word 5.1 on my 190, but I'm looking for a wordprocessor

Word 5.1 is compatible with newer things, in fact if you get the free
plugins from Microsoft it will read the newest Mac and PC versions. I
think that 5.1 was the pinnacle of Word, since then it's just been a
lot of features that aren't really needed or used and now it's a huge
application the is very hard to work with.

I know of two that are good...

http://pure-mac.com/textword.html#texedit -- A lot of features are
ported from SimpleText but more are there as well

more powerful, but I haven't used it too too much.

If none of there fit you just have a look on

avalible.
