Getting the extra heat out insures (OK, almost insures) your ability
to overclock. Lack of extra cooling doesnt prevent you from
overclocking though. It really depends on the individual CPUs. I
had a Centris 650 with a 25 MHz 68040 that overclocked to 38 MHz for
a long time (until I added a PPC card) with only the standard
heatsink.

You can improve on Apples heatsinks with usually no problem. I plan
on overclocking a 500 module soon, and I wil lexperiment on making a
better heatsink.

The supplied heat sink is designed for 33/66 MHz, maximum.

The 5xx series is cooled by conduction, by a heatsink of limited size, which
cannot be extended due to the constraints of the card cage.

"Chipping" beyond the design limit doesn't make much sense unless you can get
the extra heat out.

You know, in an odd way, you finally resolved that
lingering, nagging doubt about over-clocking. On one
hand, I agree with you. I have never bought a "kit"
for anything before and do all my own repairs and
upgrades. (Don't even ask how many desktop Macs this
has involved.) All I'm going to use the 520/540c is
for text production and *maybe* email (with an
external modem). It needs to be over-clocked about as
much as it needs to be painted candy apple red. I have
always entertained the notion of over-clocking
something but sometimes you don't do something just
because you can.

Dont buy a weasly clock-chipping kit ! Be a REAL man, and get out
the SOLDERIN' guns !

Buy a faster oscillator from digikey, remove the old one, and add the
new, faster oscillator ! DOne !

Well, in that case, one of us should put it on an ftp site. Any

I would have found an active matrix colour display as well, even
before the daughtercard and the hard drive.

Don't know about the clock chipping, but keep us informed, as I
just might do that with the 5xx parts I have left from rebuilding a bunch
of 540c's.
>>

I agree about the active matrix display ... that would be first priority for
me.

A new PRAM should also be first priority. A good PRAM battery will read more
than 3 volts on both cells, for a total of over 6 volts. A nearly dead PRAM
battery will read 2.44 to 2.52 volts per cell, for a total of about 4.96
volts. A completely dead PRAM battery will read zero.

I don't know what the limit on the cells is, but I have one machine which
would not keep time properly and the cell voltage was very close to, but
below 3 volts, each.

I strongly suspect this is a case where Apple should have gone to 3.6 volt
cells, as they did when they transitioned from the Plus line to the SE line.

Consequently, if the cells don't read more than 3 volts, each, I replace the
PRAM battery.

Be very careful when routing the wiring from the PRAM battery to the mouse
subassembly. It is very easy to get the wiring pinched between the various
plastic parts.

The consequence is the ABS plastic part is damaged and your top housing is
toast. Been there, done that. A repair is possible, but it takes a special
ABS-friendly liquid plastic cement.

E-mail me if you need info on ABS repairs on 5xx machines. I've done quite a
few.

The other components are all completely interchangeable within 520, 520c, 540
and 540c machines.

IOW, a 520 becomes a 540 simply by installing a 33/66 MHz CPU daughter card
for the 25/50 MHz card.

To convert a 520c to a 540c requires both the 33/66 MHz CPU and the display.
A "hybrid" machine, consisting of the 520c's original display and the 33/66
MHz CPU is OK, too.

Be careful with the modem's software. The upgrade to 2.5.5 to fix bugs and to
support the PPC Upgrade Card is available on-line, but the required base
software, 2.5, is not available on-line.

And GV's successor, Zoom no longer sells the base code as it was apparently
lost during the transition from GV to Boca to Zoom.

another 520/540c

2001-07-16 Thread William Ahearn

I have a 520c that I'm about to upgrade and have one
last lingering nagging doubt. I got a 32MB upgrade for
it, a new PRAM battery, a 540c CPU and a 500MB
harddrive. I'm also on the verge of ordering the
clock-chipping kit from output enablers and wanted to
know if anyone on this list has used one. I want to do
the whole upgrade in one swell foop and the only thing
holding up the process is the hesitation about the
over-clocking. Anybody have any opinions?
