dead BTI battery for PB 190/5300

2004-12-08 Thread Beniamino Cenci Goga
The battery is dead as it is not recognized neither by the PB itself
nor by a VTS charger. Mere speculation: if I take it apart with all
the precautions what should I look at to see if it is broken? Is
there a logic board or else?

I took it apart.
There are 12 elements (which resemble AA batteries) connected as a
parallel series (+-_+-_+- etc...).

From the small logic board only 4 wires: the neg, the pos, and two
yellow that connect the batteries pack to a small round magnet nested
between two adjacent batteries (is it a temperature sensor?).

Any help in this subject is welcome.
I was really surprised to see that the content of the battery are
actually 12 normal AA batteries. Provided they are normal AA
batteries as they are shorter...

Powerbooks and Newton's packs used AA NiMH batteries. You can even buy
NiMH AA batteries with soldering tabs and refurbish the battery pack,
sometimes even using better cells which will last even longer. For more
on newton batteries, check out http://www.pda-soft.de he wrote a really
good guide to refurbishing different Newton's batteries and some are
similar to the powerbooks.

Hi,

i refurbished a Powerbook 540c pack with modern cells. They should
probably have the doubble energy then the original ones.

But there is something more. The electronic of the battery
seems to calculate with the resistance of the cells. They are
all soldered serial and there is already a resistor.

Due to this all, the Powerbook 540c doesnt recognize the
real capacity of the battery.

Until now i didnt find the time, but next will be to measure
the resistant of an original battery and then modify the
self-refurbished with an resistor. So that the refurbished
one has the same reading as the original. Probably then
i get more power out of it.
