Adding sounds to PM

2003-07-06 Thread Pat O'Halloran

Hi all (especially Ira)

After successfully adding a custom sound to PM using Ira's script a
couple of weeks ago I tried again with the recent alpha release. After
dropping the sound onto the script I get this message

Can't get item 1 of {}

Has something changed in this version to stop the script working?

Thanks

Thanks.

I tried to send a copy of this file to the list but it was rejected
presumably because of the attachment.

So I have now sent copies direct to Jim and Jay.

Re: Transplant from Desktop to Laptop

2003-07-06 Thread John Hay

Since I can't use PM on my laptop the way it is now anyway and all my
"good" files are still intact on my desktop back the office, maybe I'll
try running the new pm4.2a5-preview just on the chance that this new
preview release ends up totally rebuilding what's on my laptop and I
end up being able to therefore us PM. I'll check my email later
tonight when I get back in case there are any better ideas, before I do
anything.

Thanks in advance for any ideas, I have nothing to loose, so I can try
anything.

Transplant from Desktop to Laptop

2003-07-06 Thread John Hay

I know this is all at my own risk, and maybe not even possible the way
I have attempted to do it and in the mean time while traveling I'll
have to just mail.app (aarrrgghh!) but at least it will work and I can
send and receive.

Actions I took: While still connected to our LAN in the office to
attempt to copy all needed files from my desktop to my laptop to run PM
"as-if" I were sitting at my desktop, but on my laptop instead, all
filters, accounts, settings, configs, the works.

I copied ALL the folders and ALL the files and also my PMKey which I
could find from my desktop to the exact same location on my laptop,
using Finder after having run a search to locate any files containing
the word "powermail", etc.

Then downloaded the most recent version of PM, 4.1.3 from PM's web site
and dragged the OSX PM icon to my apps folder. This is the same
version I am running on my desktop, but I'm not at my desktop, I am
traveling and I'm using my PowerBook G4.

Problems: When I launch PM, it launches fine, starts to check all the
accounts I have set up, may or may not successfully download the first
message, then quits "unexpectedly". If I relaunch PM again, the same
thing keeps happening.

I know, I know, I probably just should have set up PM from scratch on
my laptop, but then would have had to take the time to enter all the
hundreds of filters, accounts, etc. which I normally use.

Any ideas on how I could possibly launch PM on my laptop in some type
of a diagnostic or auto-correct any database corruption, etc. ?

[ANN] PowerMail 4.2 private preview

2003-07-06 Thread PowerMail info

Greetings,

We are pleased to make a preview of PowerMail 4.2 available exclusively
to members of the PowerMail discuss list for testing.

This is NOT a public release, please do not repost outside of the
PowerMail user community, thank you.

---
What's new in the PowerMail 4.2 preview (4.2a5)
---

- Now includes entirely new CTM FoxTrot(TM) high-speed search technology;
benefits over previous PowerMail releases include:

* Ultra-fast indexing and searching: preliminary benchmarks show
performance gains ranging from 300% to over 500%
* Instant on-the-fly indexing upon fetching messages
* Entirely based on Unicode for better international text searching

* Colored hiliting of search results in a message's body
* Additional search features:
  - Ability to restrict searches to subject, to, from or body
  - Search literal (ie: "the quick brown fox")
  - Search words starting with (ie: quick brown f* )
  - Search for numbers
  - Omit words (ie: quick brown -shoe -typewriter)
  - OR searches (ie: quick|rapid|fast brown fox) (see search dialog for
more
information)
* Gets rid of all former "Lady" errors
* Background indexing now fully reliable on Mac OS X
* Most of the re-indexing process occurs in a background thread, allowing
simultaneous work in the application (this used to only be true for
updating the index).
* Supports both Mac OS X and Mac OS 9

- ! Also new in 4.2a5: Now compatible with the WWDC "Panther" (Mac OS X
10.3) preview !

Known limitations in this version:
- This release ships as a Stuffit archive and not yet as a disk image
- Because of a dependency on Unicode, Mac OS 8.6 is not planned to be
supported in PowerMail 4.2; at the very least, it is not in the current
version.

---
5 steps to better searching - how to install:
---

1. In order to access this software, we ask that you join the ad hoc
"PowerMail-testing" discussion list by clicking on the following link:

The confirmation message will contain the URL to download the 4.2 preview
from.

2. Make a backup of your current PowerMail files folder. Although we are
confident enough to use this software on our own main databases, keep in
mind that PowerMail 4.2a5 will make changes to your current databases
which will no longer be readable by 4.1.3. As with any pre-release
software, use it responsibly and at your own risk.

3. Install PowerMail 4.2a5 and launch it; as a default, a fresh folder
named "PowerMail files 4.2a" will be created in your User folder. If you
wish to convert a copy of your 4.1 database (see point 2 above), use
"Switch user environments" in the Database submenu of the File menu

4. After converting your database and deleting your now-obsolete V-Twin
indexes, PowerMail should automatically begin the indexing process. If
for some reason you wish to rebuild your index later, you may do so with
the "Rebuild Indexes" item of the Database submenu of the File menu

5. Once the index is complete, start searching ! Compare former search
results and performance, and please discuss your findings either on the
PowerMail-testing list exclusively, or by private post to us at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] We are especially interested in feedback from Japanese-
and Chinese-language users with respect to the way words are broken up
for indexing; possible crash logs, with the situations that mght have
lead to them, are also of interest.

Thanks in advance, and kind regards,

The PowerMail development team

It allowed me to import 433 messages from a CE folder, I then got an
AppleTalk error which may or may not be related to the PM limit.

At any rate, I found the export script at

Looks like a bit of an arduous path to get all of my messages out of CE
and into PM, but it also looks like it can be done.

This is absolutely correct. The importing process might yield a few more

I may be wrong, but if it's the evaluation copy of PM you are using (IE

below what you will have in Claris emailer so any import process will
fall over when the limit is reached. Might be worth checking this

It is in iData Pro format and as tab-text, and it isn't too extensive as
I only started using PowerMail less than a year ago.

list archive, emailer import

2003-07-06 Thread James Pistrang

Hi all,

I'm new to this list, so forgive me if these questions have already been
asked.

1) Is there an online archive of this list?

2) I'm evaluating PowerMail 4.1.3, and I just tried importing my Emailer
database. My Emailer Mail Database is 107mb and the Mail Index is 24mb.
I optimized them prior to starting the import. PowerMail says that it
will take 1360 hours, which is a tad long. Am I doing something wrong?
Is there a (relatively) fast way to move my mail archives from Emailer to
PowerMail?

Thanks,

Jim
