It will be explained in the manual in the final version: the search
pattern let you combine the other options in a single search string. For
example, the pattern:
PowerMail feature search* | find* "very fast" -slow -sluggish
is equivalent to:
includes all of the words: powermail feature
includes at least one of the words: search* find*
includes the exact phrase: very fast
does not include the words: slow sluggish

4.2 first impessions

2003-08-10 Thread Derry Thompson

Hi All,

Wow, the search seems to be exceptionally fast!. A search for one word
in a directory containing over 4000 mail deliver 400+ results instantly!

A very very worthwhile improvement!

4.2 beta search dialog

2003-08-10 Thread Ben Kennedy

Hi all,

As far as I can tell, the two search options "includes all of the words"
and "matches search pattern" serve the same purpose. (Results from each
are identical). What's the difference?

Related to this, the wildcard expression ("something*") appears to work
in all of the search modes, not just the "matches search pattern" one.
Perhaps the intent is that an asterisk be treated literally except in the
"search pattern" mode?

There was a time (Sun, Aug 10, 2003 at 9:10 AM)
when Don said this thing:

The little fly-out triangle in the icon is a little more difficult to see
when compared to the others in the toolbar. It would be nice if it could
be isolated a bit as in the "Reply to" and" Connect Again" icons (_very_
picky critique!).
Has it been there all this time?

You have a good point indeed. We will improve this.

Like lightning

2003-08-10 Thread Jan M.J. Storms

My message database holds close to 200.000 messages. The find function in
PowerMail 4.2 returns results like lightning. Absolutely fabulous! Even
when searching on common words with results in the thousands or ten
thousands, it's blzgly fast.

Great also that the limit on results is removed. This is an email client
I can use. The "Power" in "PowerMail" is completely meaningful. Thank you

2003-08-10 Thread Don V. Zahniser

Thanks! I somehow missed or forgot the click-and-hold option on the find
button.

And yes - The new find function is great - and FAST!

The new faster indexing is really a help, too. On my less than speedy
PB1400, I had background indexing turned off in 4.1.3. No need for that
in 4.2.

Hold the button down a bit longer and it will give you the choices you
want. A quick test last night showed that this new search works
beautifully and even highlights what you're looking for in the messages
it finds.

PowerMail 4.2 - Find function

2003-08-10 Thread Don V. Zahniser

Since I am a relatively new PowerMail user, maybe someone could confirm this:

I _think_ I remember using the toolbar 'Find...' button in 4.1.3 to
search all messages...

I installed PowerMail 4.2, and went to do a 'Find...' by clicking the
toolbar icon. No matter what I do or how I select messages or folders in
the browser when clicking the 'Find...' button, I only see a dialog box
to search in the current message, and it only shows a single text field.
Command-F brings up the search dialog allowing searching in all
messages, with all the options.

If my memory is correct, then there is a change in the function of the
'Find...' toolbar button with 4.2. I would much rather this default to
'Find in all messages'.

Printing Problems

2003-08-10 Thread Don V. Zahniser

Here is a printing issue that I have had in 4.1.2, 4.1.3, and now in the
4.2 beta. I reported it to PowerMail support back in 4.1.2.

I am using a Powerbook 1400 running Mac OS 9.1, with my modem in a PCMCIA
slot, and an Epson Stylus 740 printer hooked up to the combined Printer/
Modem port. When I launch PowerMail, 'garbage' data gets sent to my
printer. Sometimes, the printer just indicates that it has received data
by showing an error light blinking. At other times, it feeds a sheet of
paper and starts to print seemingly random characters. I am not sure,
but it also appears that PowerMail sometimes continues to send data to
the printer/modem port while I am using it.

If I try to print an email message, most of the time I can't - I get a
message that the printer port is in use, even though PowerMail is the
only application running, or I get a message that the printer is not
responding. I get the former if I have managed to clear the printer by
manually feeding paper and then ejecting it (at which point it prints
some garbage). I get the latter if I have not managed to clear the
error. Note that in PowerMail 4.2 I have been unable to clear the errors
at all. It appears to be continuously sending some sort of data to the
printer

My workaround at the moment is to (try to remember to) keep my printer
turned off until I need to print from any application. When using
PowerMail, I save the message to be printed as a text file and print it
from another application after quitting PowerMail. I also can't print
from any other application while PowerMail is running.

Anybody else experience anything like this? Any suggestions?

You need at least version 1.0.4 of the HTMLRenderingLib from OS 9.1. It
worked ok under OS 9.0.4; I guess you'd have to try it and see with 8.6.

[ANN] PowerMail 4.2 public beta now available

2003-08-10 Thread PowerMail info

Greetings,

We are hereby pleased to announce the availability of the PowerMail 4.2
public beta release, which can be directly downloaded from:

==

==

This has been extensively tested both in-house and by devoted external
testers; nevertheless, please see read this text entirely in order to use
this non-final software efficiently and responsibly, thank you.

What's new in the PowerMail 4.2 public beta (from version 4.1.3)

- Now includes entirely new CTM FoxTrot(TM) high-speed search technology;
benefits over previous PowerMail releases include:
* Ultra-fast indexing and searching: benchmarks show performance gains
ranging from 300% to over 500%
* Instant on-the-fly indexing upon fetching messages
* New extensible search user interface with combinable fields - similar
to Panther's Finder searches
* Supports the following search criteriae:
  - Entire message content
  - Subject
  - Body
  - From
  - To
  - From or To
  - other message attributes:
- Date sent [range]
- Date received [range]
- Label
- Account
* Supports the following combinable search operators:
  - Ability to restrict searches to subject, to, from or body
  - Includes all of the words
  - Includes exact phrase
  - Includes at least one of the words
  - Does not include the words
  - matches the search pattern (advanced mode):
- Search literal (ie: "the quick brown fox")
- Search words starting with (ie: quick brown f* )
- Omit words (ie: quick brown -shoe -typewriter)
- OR searches (ie: quick|rapid|fast brown fox)
* Offers colored hiliting of search results in a message's body
* Other improvements over previous searching in PowerMail 3 and 4:
  - Gets rid of all former "Lady" errors
  - Background indexing now fully reliable on Mac OS X
  - Numbers are now indexed
  - Supports Japanese, Chinese and Korean properly (entirely based on Unicode)
  - Most of the re-indexing process occurs in a background thread,
allowing simultaneous work in the application (this used to only be true
for updating the index)

* FILTERING can now also occur based on a message's content (notably
useful for creating customizeable built-in spam filters)

* IMAP SEARCHES now possible and very fast due to indexing of the local
IMAP cache (once connected, the search dialog will allow restricting
searches to the selected IMAP mailboxes)

* Still supports Mac OS X, Mac OS 9 and even 8.6

* Now compatible with the "Panther" (Mac OS X 10.3) preview builds

[Note: this test version is currently not localized in French, Japanese,
Dutch or German; these translations will be included in the final 4.2
version.]

4 steps to better searching - how to install:
---

1. Make a backup of your current PowerMail files folder. Although we are
confident enough to use this software on our own main databases, keep in
mind that PowerMail 4.2b1 will make changes to your current databases
which will no longer be readable by 4.1.3. As with any pre-release
software, use it at your own risk.

2. Install PowerMail 4.2b1 and launch it; as a default, a fresh folder
named "PowerMail files 4.2" will be created in your User folder. If you
wish to convert a copy of your 4.1 database (see point 2 above), use
"Switch user environments" in the Database submenu of the File menu

3. After converting your database and deleting your now-obsolete V-Twin
indexes, PowerMail should automatically begin the indexing process. If
for some reason you wish to rebuild your index later, you may do so with
the "Rebuild Indexes" item of the Database submenu of the File menu

4. Once the index is complete, start searching ! Compare former search
results and performance, and please discuss your findings either:
- on the PowerMail discussion list
- using the "Send a message to PowerMail support" option in the Help menu
of registered versions
- if needed, by private post to us at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
We are especially interested in possible crash logs with the situations
that might have lead to them, are also of interest.

Thanks in advance, and kind regards,

The PowerMail development team
