Tuesday, 10, May, 2005 (01, Rabi` al-Thani, 1426) Indonesian Embassy Wants Miyati Case Reinvestigated Maha Akeel, Arab News JEDDAH, 10 May 2005 - After visiting Nour Miyati at the hospital, the Indonesian Embassy recommends reinvestigating her case. "I found her physically better now than when she was first brought to the hospital in Shumaisi but mentally she seems to be unstable," M. Sukiarto, labor attache at the Indonesian Embassy, told Arab News. The investigative committee commissioned by the Riyadh Municipality came out with its report earlier this week after two months of investigating the case of Miyati who accused her sponsor and his wife of torture. In March, Miyati was taken to a Riyadh hospital by her sponsor in critical condition with severe injuries causing gangrene to her fingers, toes and part of her right foot. She has had some of her fingers amputated as a result. Her case received wide media attention and caused public outrage. She was transferred to the Riyadh Specialist Hospital for better medical treatment upon orders from Crown Prince Abdullah. At first she claimed that her sponsor tied her up for a month in a bathroom and beat her severely injuring her eyes and knocking several of her teeth out. In the committee's report, Miyati has retracted her earlier accusations about being tied up. When Arab News spoke with Sukiarto to comment on the report, he expressed surprise at the findings especially that the embassy and the lawyer it hired for Miyati was denied access to her throughout the investigation. During the past two days Sukiarto and the lawyer has visited Miyati at the Specialist Hospital and found her mentally unstable. "She didn't recognize us even after we introduced ourselves and couldn't remember what she had for breakfast," said Sukiarto to Arab News. "I think it is necessary to reinvestigate the case after she fully recovers from her injuries physically and mentally because her current condition might have caused her to change her statements," he said. She is being charged now with making false accusations and her sponsor and his wife are charged with assault and mistreatment. "I think her mental condition is the result of her suffering and we should wait until she recovers before charging her," he said. The lawyer will follow up on the case in the meantime to ensure fairness. The National Society for Human Rights, which became involved with the case from the start, has not seen Miyati yet at the Riyadh Specialist Hospital. "We have not visited her yet so I don't know what her current physical and mental condition is," said Thuraya Abid Sheikh from the NSHR to Arab News. "She did not seem to be suffering from any mental problem when we visited her at Shumaisi and neither does the medical report by the investigative committee mention anything about that so I don't know why she is having a problem now," she said when asked about what Sukiarto observed. "If the Indonesian Embassy wishes us to look into the case again we will but they haven't contacted us yet," said Sheikh.
