RE: [OT] And the saga continues ...

2007-03-08 Thread Bill Arnold

Kris,

I didn't mean to come across indifferent to the difficult times Steve
and yourself are faced with today, I was just projecting how I deal with
difficult times, which is typically to study, make decisions, and then
think about other things - usually the future. When I thought about
yourself and Steve, it struck me that you must be thrilled to finally be
moving into your house, so that's where my thinking led.

Of course you guys have some real hardships to manage at the moment, and
in that regard I wish you the strength to deal with it, and the peace of
mind to find happiness in even the smallest things.

Is it possible to compare 2 separate folders of reports (I have another

There are various 'DBF compare' utilities around, since the report files
are just DBF files with different extensions you could maybe leverage
one of those.

The house is one of our joys and one of our problems right now. We are over
budget, and I have just requested an increase in our loan amount. In the
meantime, the general contractor who is at least partly responsible for our
predicament is throwing his substantial weight around saying he is going to
shut down production on our house because the overruns mean his bill has not
been paid in full. We just received his invoice a week ago.

The overruns total approximately $100K, and are primarily due to our
difficult building site. It is beautiful, but it sure has been tough.

The contractor is saying things like the bank is going to take back our
house and we will lose the whole enchilada, and he'll finish building it
anyway.

So at the moment I'm just doing what I need to so that the loan increase can
get processed, and trying not to lose my head over the construction
problems. I have to believe that we are doing what we are supposed to be
doing, and that this is going to work out, even though I am frightened.

Well, sure, just look at their track record...

I've checked, and all the Linux servers under my perview have updated
to tz2007m or so (the 13th update to the timezone system this year -
amazing how many places change the rules annually!) and the US DST
shift has been in place since 2005, apparently. I guess the big worry
is not the OS, though, but the subsidiary apps like calendars and
workflow servers (or whatever you'd classify Exchange as) that do date
math.

And in addition, if you have a W2K box there is no patch distributed via
Windows Update because W2K is in maintenance mode and this apparently
isn't considered a critical update. According to a co-worker, you have
to pay MS $4000 to get a patch. OTOH there is a utility called TZEDIT
that you can run on pretty much any version of Windows and manually
change the TZ info.

Yeah right. You can get the 3rd party patch here, so you don't have to
do it manually on NT/W2K, and it'll even work on higher platforms for
simplicity's sake:

http://www.intelliadmin.com/blog/2007/01/unofficial-windows-2000-daylight.html

We have hundreds or even thousands of computers/stations running our
software in turnkey installs where the owners have no clue about how
to maintain a computer, let alone think about something like this. We
had to send postcards to all our customers with a current support
contract and link them to a page on our site with instructions on
updating their computer system-- we wrote a tool that they can run on
the 'server' and it will push it out to the stations automatically.
Even still, I suspect there will be a very large number of calls
starting Sunday with people wondering why their systems are off by 1
hour...

So if one runs this util, how do you know it fixed it? Is there a value
you can check that specifies the patch i.e. SR2-2b or whatever, or would
you have to do a before/after view of the registry key it makes mention of?

Offer it to a local camera shop or university. If it can be fixed and given

I had a Czech bus driver on a 2 week trip last summer. When he wasn't

Hi Kristyne!

Throwing his weight around? Is he really.

Did anyone estimate the project? Isn't the estimate supposed to be correct?
Don't people who present themselves as expert enough to write such budgets
have to carry malpractice insurance? Questions you could raise with a lawyer.

I have mentioned that perhaps he has some culpability in those overruns. :-)

As far as the lawyers go, I'll only call one if things get a whole lot
worse. I know where the money went. I wrote all the checks. It was all
digging holes and breaking rocks and waterproofing and drainage and
backfilling and so on and so forth. The problem only made its ugly presence
known when we went to draw from indirect to pay the general contractor and
the bank said they had been paying it out all along. IOW, it was gone
already and they hadn't told us. So that's how we managed to fork over all
that extra money without realizing we had such a big problem.

I think we'll get it solved. I don't know what the solution will be yet, but
I believe that we haven't come this far for this long just to get slapped
down in the last two months. It could happen, but my gut says it won't.

Further to George's hard disk, I have a Camera 'PowerShot A70' which
cost £200 a year back. Now has a problem with the zoom lens. The quote
to look at it was £100 so we bought a new one.

The question is what do we do with the Broken camera. It feels stupid to
put it into a landfill site (bin it)

Anyone know where I can send it to (UK)
