[OT] Lost generation

Subject: Palindrome
If you cannot reach this site from this email, please go to
YouTube and look for it as it is really
quite clever.
 LISTEN AND READ CAREFULLY.
A palindrome reads the same backwards as
forward. This video reads the exact opposite
backwards as forward. Not only does it read the opposite, the meaning is the
exact opposite..

This is only a 1 minute, 44 second video and
it is brilliant. Make sure you read as
well as listen...forward and backward.

This is a video that was submitted in a
contest by a 20-year old. The contest was
titled u @ 50 by AARP. This video won second place. When they showed it,
everyone in the room was awe-struck and
broke into spontaneous applause. So simple and yet so brilliant.

Take a minute and watch it.

Re: [NF] Postgre SQL

2007-04-05 Thread ken.com
I would like to replace the present vfp9 dbf/dbc tables with postgresql. The
problem is that we have thousands of installations in
all states - all in healthcare offices/clinics where most of the people know
almost nothing about installing software, hardware,
etc. For us to do them one at a time is not possible. Is there a way to deliver
it with an update CD, automate the setup, etc so
the data could be converted - all with little or no user assistance?

Excellent! Soon we will have vanquished all foes of Open Source RDMS
solutions with PostgreSQL... (lifted in a general sense from the Kilrathi
commander in the Wing Commander II game g).

I really am looking forward to getting back into PostgreSQL now that I got
the PostreSQL For Windows book I mentioned previously. I am in the midst of
a pure VFP project right now, but am really hungering for a crack at
blending the technologies, then moving into Dabo with Python and PostgreSQL.
It just feels like a killer set of tools, and VFP will still be there...

Re: Microsoft to release FoxPro 'Sedna' as Shared Source - next generation?

2007-03-14 Thread ken.com
I started with fox in 1988 also.

It would be great if most of the present users could come up with a substitute
that would run on windows, Linux and Mac and would
'look' as much like VFP as possible, with a framework that would duplicate as
closely as possible all the functions in VFP. Also,
we need a conversion technique better than those available for converting fpd
to vfp. Dabo anyone? I think Python is as good as any
language I have seen and can probably do anything that VFP can do. I will not
do a significant conversion to anything that is
limited to running on Windows. fpd to vfp was my last effort in that direction.

all the fun and best wishes to you.

I started with FoxBase/dBASE/Clipper, went all Fox in '88 and ran with
it exclusively through '98 (changing jobs, states, marital status,
jobs, MVP Awards, jobs, books, jobs, magazine columns and jobs). In
'98, I started working with Red Hat and saw the light. My company is
still supporting Fox 6 through 9 applications and may even get some of
that cool SednaX stuff in there. But now we owe it to our clients to
work to ensure their transition to the NextGen thing is smooth. Sounds
like another busy decade.

year in a row I gave a session on Dabo, but for the first time we
have a decent quality recording of it. I've posted it to YouTube; you
can see it at:

Due to YouTube restrictions on length, the talk is broken into 6

Re: [OT] Costco: The 'anti-Wal-Mart'

2007-02-23 Thread ken.com
If you have a wholesale membership ($100) you get back a percentage of your
purchases. I have received over $200 back every year
since Costco came to my area (Foster City, CA) I get computers, hard drives,
etc there as well as supplies for the office. My only
complaint is that I can't use a credit card except when I purchase online. They
do so well that the nearest Walmart is in Mountain
View - about 30 minutes South depending on the traffic. We have a super Target
and I do shop there. Sometimes you don't want to
purchase 100 pounds of rice or some things that are usually only at Safeway.
The Costco in South San Francisco has a gas station
and I agree it is good. I buy gas there almost all the time. Again, my
complaint is that I can't use a credit card. You will notice
that the employes have all been there forever.

I go to the Costco near us because of the gas station. Last weekend I
paid $2.09 and it was $2.25-$2.29 at the other gas stations in the area.
I think I get my $50 back in savings at the gas station. If it wasn't
for the gas station it would not be as good of a deal. The food is also
good for the price. We do have a Wal-Mart and a Super Target (has
grocery) near the Costco and we go to all three for different items.

This guy sent me 3 photocopies of 1099s.

Don't I have to provide originals to the IRS?

Re: Vista USB

2007-02-01 Thread ken.com
I agree.

Those who watch CNBC in the morning for the stock market reports are aware of
their recent 'upgrade' to the flashy graphics with
the annoying sound effects. It used to be so loud that I had to turn it off. I
guess they got so many complaints that they had to
tone it down a little, but it is still obnoxious. CNBC needs to get rid of the
fat blond with the young kids 'for a lack of a
better word' and all the other obnoxious comments. She has 2 minutes with a
guest and she takes 1.45 minutes to ask a question so
convoluted and full of twisted, stupid logic that the person being interviewed
has no idea what to say. Her laugh is like a choking
chicken. God!, who approves this garbage? They obviously do not use the
product. What idiot comes up with that garbage? What idiot
approves it? Fire the bastard. Give us some relief from the pain.

Around the mid 1980's we got a Sharp copier that copied 20 copies per minute.
That was very fast back then and this monster took up
a lot of space and cost $1,000 for routine maintenance. It had a horribly
obnoxious female voice that talked to you while you were
copying. How stupid and irritating! They obviously did not do any pre-release
testing. At least Sharp included a switch so you
could turn the obnoxious devil off.

Now comes Microsoft. Late to the party with a bad plan.

What we need is a shopping cart for about 40 items (paper supplies and

well and is easy to maintain. We would be willing to pay someone to do the

Thanks, that is exactly what I wanted.

It encrypts with 256 bit AES which is used by the government for top secret
documents so should satisify Medicare and the HIPAA
law.

I also found axcrypt which is not what I wanted but looks like a very good
program for quickly encrypting one file or one folder
'on the fly'. It integrates with explorer and is very handy. This is great to
quickly encrypt a file to attach to an email and then
send the password a different way: fax or tell over the phone. If you want to
send 10 files (for example) you could zip them and
then encrypt for a small secure package.

virtual machine like VMWare or VirtualPC?

Re: Former employer called today

I suggest that you should work 'by the job'. Quote a price for 1 week or
whatever time frame you estimate it will take (paid in
advance). This gives you control of your time without having to track hours and
arguing about how the time was spent. Then X amount
per day/week for any time after that (paid in advance always). After that
initial period, you could offer to work full time (if
that is acceptable - who knows, maybe they have changed) with a 6 mo/1yr
contract with minimum 90 day notice to cancel the
contract. I believe everyone should always work with a written contract. It
makes you think through some things in advance and
really helps you when you leave.

Michael -

It's totally up to you. You know how sh|tty they were to you as an
employee, so do you think things will change if you try to help them?

You're not looking to be reinstated, but more along the lines of bailing
them out.

A bailout-consulting-rate should be high, in the 300/hr range.

If you suggest a prepaid retainer of 2400 for up to 8 hours of work, and
they agree to it, and you do the work - thats 2400 you didn't have before.

I'm sure you can swallow your pride for at least those 8 hours, right?

If you do step back in to that site, you already know whats going on; so
suggest you ignore 'how' they treated you prior, and suggest to *THEM* a
contract engagement (AND NOT a TEMP Employee thing).

Good luck, either way you go.
regards [Bill]

[NF] re: python

2006-08-14 Thread ken.com
For some reason I am not receiving the python related emails. Is that newsgroup
not working anymore? or do I need to do something.

I now have apache2.2 SSL installed with postgresql, python, Perl5, xmail,
slimFTDd and I am going to spend some time trying to go
thru them and learn something about them. I have about 20 different domains
running accessible using named virtual hosts running
under one IP address with one of the domains also working with SSL - 2048 bit
RSA.

I don't have any experience with Python, not much with Perl but a lot with VFP
since 1988. Anyone have any suggestions where to
start working with web access to postgresql and VFP9 possibly using python? My
goal is to eventually move a very large VFP
application to something like python so it would be platform-less-dependent and
more web compatible.
