Re: [NF] Vista and XP

2007-04-25 Thread Chet Gardiner
Don't forget to setup your printer as a DHCP client or,

if you wish, hard code an I/P way above your other computers (ie: router
DHCP root = 198.168.1.0 -- Set printer to 198.168.1.199 and make sure
the router range is 100 through 199 -- you get the idea..)

The important thing with this network stuff is to make sure they're all
on the same I/P root and SubMask. Once that's done, it's duck soup for
the rest (unless the router craps out).

Re: [NF] Vista and XP

2007-04-25 Thread Chet Gardiner
ipconfig /allis your friend.

Run this command in a DOS box on both machines.

You will find out what device is serving out I/P addresses (if either of
them is) and what the main root address is (198.168.1.1 or 198.168.2.1
or 198.168.0.0 or whatever the root DHCP series is).

It will also tell you what I/P addresses your desktop and laptop think
they are. It's possible that the one that isn't working has an I/P on a
different root (198.168.x.), an I/P out of range for the router or the
SUBMASK may be different.

I've had no trouble setting the router to be a DHCP server and then
setting all other computers to get I/P address from the DHCP server.

You should also turn OFF ALL WINDOZE AND OTHER FIREWALLS on each
machine! Your router, like mine, is probably keeping the world out fine
so you don't need that crap.

You can (and SHOULD) test your router with www.grc.com Shield's Up in a
browser on any machine that's connected to the internet through the
router.

Mine tests as Stealth on all ports -- yours should too.

RE: [NF] Vista and XP

2007-04-25 Thread Virgil Bierschwale
Thanks, I'll try and figure it out tomorrow.
Went the network way because I bought a hp color laserjet with full duplex
printing for my chamber of commerce and real estate stuff and this one has a
network connection so that I can print from either computer.

Just need to figure it all out

That's what it says, but I can't find it as all the "auto assign" boxes are
checked.
I'm taking mcafee off now just incase that's part of it.

Are you using DHCP or hard-coding your IP? Is it
possible that both your laptop and desktop have the
same hard-coded IP?

[NF] Vista and XP

2007-04-25 Thread Virgil Bierschwale
I ordered a dell dimension 9200 with 2 gb ram and a 20" flatscreen because
they had it on sale and I needed a development machine.

My laptop has xp on it and its connected to a dsl modem, a router and a
switch and it all works fine.
When I hook up the desktop that has vista home on it, it gives me a IP
address problem.

If I hook the desktop directly up to the dsl modem, it works fine.

What gives with that ??

Thanks,
