I seem to remember one can use the Win2K installation CD, run as a

Have you tried that?

a buddy told me about an EASY linux hack for doing just what you want
- I have the details at home so if you aren't in a rush I could get that
to you...

He said he could gain admin control of a Win2k box in under 20 seconds
after booting the linux distro...

This is one of those security mantras of "if you can get physical access
to the machine, you can own it"...

Actually, I see the latest version of Helix includes a ChntPW program,
which is the one used to change the login pws.

# Chntpw : Change Windows passwords.

Don't need to. You download the Knoppix iso (www.knopper.org), burn
image to CD and boot up from CD. From there, it's a matter of following
directions. (I can scan those from the book for you). Or I could try
to help, although I'm not a Linux expert either. Also, I have never
tried to reset the LOGIN pw on w2k using linux, just used the tools to
view existing mail passwords. Finally, as others pointed out, once
you're in Linux, you might be able to just scarf up the address books,
and not worry about the pws at all. Good luck.

Actually, I was thrown by your wording. If you need to reset the LOGIN

Distro Live CD. Hacking Knoppix contains step by step info on how to do

I'm sorry to hear that. They Helix Linux Distro
comes with a Windows toolkit that
auto-starts when you put the CD in. The third page (click the barely
visible triangle next to the Icon) on the third down on the left
(Incident response) has a "mail password viewer". I can verify it works
on most clients in W2K. Good luck.

Doh! What a stupid oaf I am for saying that. That's what I get for
trying to be funny. I am *very* sorry for your loss.

My friend and neighbor died a couple of years ago. We did our best to
help his wife and children through the trauma and sorry, in addition to
all of the finances, insurance, etc. We're still helping them out as
much as we can.

On a technical front, I believe there are Windows cracking software out
there that can get the password(s) for you. In addition, if all else
fails, you can use Knoppix ( or another Live Linux CD ) to get the
contents off of that PC and imported into another Outlook or Thunderbird.

Good luck Kent. Let us know how it goes with the PC.
