I am inclined to believe it is a film to get the troops fired up. I
used to work for General Electric in the appliance division. They had a
sales video made by the Muppets. They showed it at the end of product
training classes and it definitely produced the desired results. It was
funny, inspirational and got everyone motivated to go out and sell.

In that light the Microsoft video is kind of sad. It would be better as
a spoof.

That's my take as well.

There was too much effort and detail in the video for it to be a spoof. If
it's a spoof, the audience has to get it -- but it clearly wasn't
tongue-in-cheek.

Remember, MSFT is first a marketing company. This video isn't targeted for
you or I, but resellers.

The video got You-Tubed and MSFT, being an marketing company, has tried to
get out in front of it -- "It's a spoof! Wink! Wink! Don't you get it?"

That's an EXCELLENT point. As stupid as it was, I'm all for helping our
economy! Reminds me of my not-soon-enough-ex-wife bitching at me for
not doing tons of home improvements but instead hiring local h.i. pros
to do that stuff. I always told her "I'm helping the economy" (and the
fact that I wasn't good at that stuff and didn't want to look at my
screw-ups as I walked around the house daily).

Funny punster (Dough instead of Doe), Mike.

Accountability to who?

First of all, you need to work in a large company to understand accountability
such as this. Each
entity has their own budget and rules for accountability. In a company as big
as Microsoft, GM, any
of the big three accounting firms, Exxon Mobil, Walmart, etc. you try to break
these groups into
profit/loss centers under a standard corporate hierarchy. Each one of them has
a goal to make money,
or defined budget to not lose more than a specified amount. Meet or exceed the
expectations and life
is good.

Just because you think this is a waste of money does not mean it is. Any one of
the company videos
could have been developed as a team building exercise, marketing, or even as a
spoof. If the group
is meeting the targets for profitability it won't be a problem internally. If
the company is
profitable, it won't be a problem. Microsoft is not the only company producing
videos these days. I
have seen this at several other large companies I have worked at and for over
the years.

We can also look at the upside. *If* Microsoft did produce this video and paid
for it, people made
money. Videographers who shot the video, editors, producers, the video company
and stockholders,
extras, catering people, sound people, grips, etc. The economy is better.

But no one here knows how this video was created, who created it, what it cost,
or how it was
funded. For all you know, it could have been created by some upstart video
company for free, trying
to get an in at another project or building their corporate resume. It could
have even been created
by a competitor to make the other company look stupid. Lots of possibilities,
and lots of
assumptions.

Yes, I've seen them and I was thinking about those when I replied. (I
offered to my customers that I would get one of those chairs.) M$
does have a history of poking fun at itself, which in and of itself
makes me hold some fleeting admiration for it, as most big companies
would never do such a thing.

Those films and others I've seen before feel different from this one.
I tried to write satire once for the local newspaper. The editorial
page editor was a friend of mine, and I asked him to make an honest
assessment. I thought it was too broad, but his staff said that it
was too believable! Maybe this is like that: too close to stuff that
they have done in ernest to be good enough satire.

But, we'll never know. Funny either way -- funnier if unintentional.

It should come with a laugh track.

Re: [NF] How can you *not* want Vista after this?

2008-04-16 Thread Jeff Johnson
Is that for real? A friend of mine and I did some audio tapes over the
last 15 years and have them on cassettes. We wanted to put them on CD
so I bought a soundblaster that "Works with Vista". I have an Ubuntu /
Vista dual boot for that kind of stuff. After I don't know how many
installs of software and reboots, I fired up an application to record
the cassettes and "Could not detect your hardware device".

I guess I should have bought a "real" sound card and not a Creative
SoundBlaster.

In my opinion the PC vs. Mac Yoga commercial is the most accurate Vista
advertising.

Like the line from Billy Madison (which coincidentally applies to
that whole movie), we are all dumber for having viewed that.

You know, in the same way the tShirted lady looked up to the lead singer and
was brought up and accepted on stage, I too will look up to Microsoft --
accepted, dancing, looking down on the rest of the minions, happy with Vista
and SP1.

In reality, that was the longest three minutes of my life...
