Nah unfortunately I allow MS to contact me (but not partners), so in
this instance I might just have been slow and unlucky!

On the other hand I have just won an MP3 player, which will be my father
in laws birthday present sorted and with my action pack I do have more
copies of vista than I need.

Well Dave, did you win a copy? MS have sent the winners emails out so
if you managed to enter the competition with 0.2 seconds, you may have
won. Unfortunately I didn't (yet, apparently we are to give it 48
hours)!

On a lighter note, I installed an evaluation copy of vista on a
partition on my home PC and thanks to the mess that is drivers, I am
quite happy id didn't win. I can't see me upgrading to Vista anytime
this year.

http://blogs.msdn.com/ianm/archive/2007/01/31/have-we-reached-1000-winne

I found the answer by starting from the bottom up on the videos. IIRC
the second from last video had the company in it and there was a chapter
link to them. I was basically checking all the chapter titles in the
videos that were referring to Vista. That was the only company name
that I could find in any of them.

The 3D representation of the underground was truly impressive but I
can't believe they did it in 2 days though

I'm just looking at the User Presentation workshop - good stuff.

Opps, forgot this...

Remember that from 5.30 p.m. today we are making available 1,000 copies
of Windows Vista and the 2007 Microsoft Office system in return for
correctly answering a simple question, the answer to which is contained
within the presentations throughout the day (the first 1,000 valid
entries with the correct answer will be eligible, terms and conditions
apply).

2007-01-19 Thread Virgil Bierschwale
Been there, done that, and its sure the truth..
The majority of IT depts are one of the reasons VFP is dying in the
corporate world.

That’s because they inherited an app that they have to maintain that was
developed by a NON IT person because IT was too busy to develop it
themselves in the first place...
I've seen many places where IT thought that it was the keeper of the gate
and that they controlled what the business used and didn’t use.

The problem is that when the business stakeholders don't get what they need
to accomplish their business functions, then they start going outside of IT
to get results.

I talked a friend of mine out of starting his own IT dept in engineering
once
I could see his point, but there were better ways to accomplish that without
the problems it would create.

I guess that would depend on how you measure it. I have worked for a number
of Fortune 500 companies that had VFP apps deployed widely. In one case, I
did some maintenance on an application that was on 18,000 desktops.

So how do you count it? One app in one company? Or 18,000 VFP runtimes?

F500s are a lot like a bunch of SMBs that sometimes get along. HR has their
West-Wind-based HR application, Field Service has their VFP-based trouble
ticket application, Accounting has their audit app, but IT claims not to
support VFP...
