[libreoffice-projects] Marketing/Community Budgets for 2023

2022-12-20 Thread Italo Vignoli
Let's do awesome things! Get support for your projects and ideas from
TDF budget

Want to organise a local LibreOffice event? Need some merchandise to
boost your project or community? Then we can help you!

The Document Foundation, the non-profit behind LibreOffice, is backed by
contributions from ecosystem members and volunteers, as well as
donations from end-users. This helps us to maintain TDF, but we can do a
lot more too. And next year, we want to do a lot of projects again!

Each year, we set a budget that LibreOffice projects and communities can
use for financial support. Some examples:

* Booking a location, and travel refunds for a local event (eg a
translation sprint)

* Merchandise for community members, to use at events and conferences
* Infrastructure to start a new project (or help an existing one)

So if you have some ideas for a meetup, project or activity that could
benefit from financial help, let us know! We can also assist you in
other ways: our team members are there to help you, and enable you to do
exciting and interesting things.

You don't need to work out all the technical details right now - the
main thing is that we have an overview. To help us with planning, we
kindly ask you to send your ideas by January 6, 2023, as we try to
prepare the 2023 annual budget in January.

You can send your proposal (with estimated costs) to
treasu...@documentfoundation.org and me...@documentfoundation.org, and
we'll take a look. Of course, can't guarantee that everything will be
considered and approved, but we'd love to hear your ideas!

including questions, according to the number of submissions.

TALK SUBMISSIONS

All talk submissions have to be made in the Pentabarf event planning

[libreoffice-projects] IMPORTANT UPDATE LibreOffice Conference

2022-07-01 Thread Italo Vignoli
We apologize for being silent about LibreOffice Conference 2022, but we
have had significant but unforeseeable logistic issues in Bolzano when
we have looked for available hotel rooms.

Even the local tourism authority has not been able to find more than a
handful of rooms available for the last week of September, definitely
not enough for the number of attendees we are expecting.

Luckily, there are other beautiful cities in Italy. To avoid similar
issues, we have decided to explore Milan, as the number of conference
venues and hotel rooms is so large that chances of finding somethig
suitable was definitely higher.

In fact, we have found a beautiful conference space right behind Piazza
del Duomo at Fondazione Culturale San Fedele, right in the center of the
city, and rooms in hotels close to the metro (which reaches Piazza del
Duomo). The conference will represent an opportunity to visit Milan,
which is one of Italy's most beautiful cities.

We will share all logistic details before July 15. Together with the
logistic details, we will share infos about places to see, and food &
drinks to enjoy.

The dates of the conference have not changed: we will start on September
28 with community meetings, while the conference will be on September 29
and 30 (full day), and will close in the morning of October 1st.

People who want to attend the event can start looking at flights to one
of Milan's three airports: Milan Linate (LIN), Milan Malpensa (MXP) and
Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY). Milan can be reached by high-speed train
from Paris, and with long-distance trains from most of Europe.

As soon as we share logistic details, we also suggest people to look for
hotel rooms based on the list of affordable hotels close to the metro we
are putting together. Most of the hotels will be rather small, as large
hotels are usually quite expensive.

Milan has a rather large metro network, and public transport which get
almost everywhere. To get around the city with public transport, we use
the Moovit smartphone app, which is quite helpful. Taxis are extremely
expensive, and should be used only for emergencies (NEVER from and to
airports, as there are cheap bus services).

Looking forward to meeting the community in Milan, nine years after 2013
LibOCon hosted by the University of Milan.

Best regards, Italo

NOTE - Please share this message with your native language community

[libreoffice-projects] IMPORTANT LibreOffice Conference

2022-06-15 Thread Italo Vignoli
We have been silent about the LibreOffice Conference because we are
experiencing a few unexpected logistic issues. We are working hard to
solve them as soon as possible, but in the meantime we ask you to wait
before confirming your travel programs, or to get in touch with us if
you have already booked your flights.

The objective is to keep the dates of the conference, but the location
may change to another city. We will communicate the details in the next
couple of weeks.

[libreoffice-projects] FOSDEM

2022-02-04 Thread Italo Vignoli
This weekend is the FOSDEM weekend, and as usual the LibreOffice project
will be one of the leading forces behind the virtual event (as in 2021).

Community members will present their talks at the LibreOffice Technology
devroom, on Saturday from 1:30PM to 6PM, and on Sunday from 10AM to 6PM:
https://fosdem.org/2022/schedule/track/libreoffice_technology/. Details
of each presentation - links to streaming and chat rooms - by clicking
on the title of the talk.

We will also have a stand: https://stands.fosdem.org/stands/libreoffice/.

Tomorrow I will open the main Community track at 10AM with the talk:
"Making a community-managed FOSS project sustainable in the medium- to
long-term". Although you may have already listened to the presentation,
you are all invited:
https://fosdem.org/2022/schedule/event/community_sustainable/.

I will also speak at the Legal and Policy Issues devroom tomorrow at
2:30PM about: "Why the pandemic could help FOSS, but was a win for
proprietary software".

The schedule for the different tracks is here:
https://fosdem.org/2022/schedule/tracks/.

Please let me know if I forgot something (maybe, a talk from someone I
don't know but is a member of the LibreOffice community).

See you at FOSDEM !!!

I will try to be a good example by submitting three talks for the

[libreoffice-projects] Marketing Call/Webinar, May 27

2021-05-18 Thread Italo Vignoli
On May 27 at 3PM CEST (1PM UTC), during the marketing call, I will
present some marketing tools available to community members that were
developed according to the marketing plan:

(1) Slide Deck about Project History
(2) Slide Deck about Project Sustainability
(3) Slide Deck about LibreOffice Technology
(4) Slide Deck about Digital Sovereignty

These slide decks, with speaker's notes, will be uploaded to TDF cloud
in two versions: the original ODP and the exported PDF (where the notes
are at the end).

I will also present the LinkedIn Pages which were mentioned in one of
the last blog posts. They represent an opportunity for the project, as
LinkedIn is one of the most followed sources of enterprise contents and
as such can help us to reach the objective of supporting the business of
ecosystem companies.

After the call, I will produce a video based on the contents of the
webinar, to allow every community member to get the information about
the slide decks, and be prepared to use them.

Looking forward to meeting all of you on May 27 at 3PM CEST, on the
following link: https://jitsi.documentfoundation.org/marketing

[libreoffice-projects] LAST CHANCE Community/Marketing Budgets 2021

2020-12-09 Thread Italo Vignoli
First of all, thanks to the few communities that have replied in due
time. As we would like to get all requests from all communities, we have
extended the deadline to December 20, in order to have the budget ready
in early 2021 (attention: no further delays).

We are asking native language communities to provide the following:

1. A list of objectives you would like to pursue in 2021. Please avoid
wishful thinking, and stick to achievable objectives. A few examples:
organize a virtual meeting with public administrations to educate them
about LibreOffice and ODF; organize a local Virtual LibreOffice
Conference; support local groups organizing activities – from remote –
in schools and universities; etc.

2. For each objective, provide a rationale and a sensible amount of
money. Again, we are spending donations money, and we must be extremely
cautious both with requests and with approvals. Requests missing a
rationale or spending details (easy to understand) will not be approved.

3. For requests equal or exceeding 1,000 euro, you must provide the
outline of a project, because a large amount of money is probably
covering different expense chapters (infrastructure, suppliers, OOP
money) and budget approvers should be allowed to have a clear picture of
what they approve.

Examples of activities which TDF will provide a budget for:

1. virtual community events (aimed at getting face-time for contributors)

2. marketing activities (aimed at representing the project to the
outside world)

3. community events in presence (only if possible according to the local
law)

4. targeted projects (for instance, promoting LibreOffice in schools)

In addition, we ask you to provide a list, if any, of infrastructure
related requests, such as - for example - additional computing power or
new services for your native language community.

The idea is to have a good plan for 2021 as soon as possible, while
keeping the administrative overhead low, and have two authorizers
responsible for the final approval of the budget.

TDF BoD will provide a budget bucket for marketing and a budget bucket
for community. Budget requests will be associated to the relevant
budget, and then approved by budget approvers (according to the
availability of funds).

##

Before sending any budget request, please read carefully TDF
reimbursement policies:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/TDF/Policies/Community_Refunds.

The updated deadline for the submission is December 20, 2020. Submission
should be sent to treasu...@documentfoundation.org, with copy to
so...@libreoffice.org, flo...@documentfoundation.org and
it...@libreoffice.org.

[libreoffice-projects] Community/Marketing Budgets 2021

2020-11-06 Thread Italo Vignoli
Dear members of LibreOffice native language communities,
We are going through challenging times, for reasons which have nothing
to do with free open source software. The pandemic is hitting hard every
geography, and as a consequence all activities are slowed down or delayed.

In 2020, we were supposed to organize events and other face-to-face
meetings, and this was reflected by approved budget requests. Because of
the situation, the majority of the budget has not been spent.

On the other hand, we want to support your community and marketing
activities under the new conditions, where the majority of countries is
under partial or total lockdowns, or – in the best of cases – with
constrained mobility.

The situation is not going to change for the foreseeable future, so for
the first six months of 2021, if not for the entire year.

So, we have to schedule in advance marketing/community activities, to
approve the budget as soon as possible – hopefully before the end of
2020 or very early in 2021 – and have the time to get organized.

We are therefore asking native language communities to provide the
following:

1. A list of objectives you would like to pursue in 2021. Please avoid
wishful thinking, and stick to achievable objectives. A few examples:
organize a virtual meeting with public administrations to educate them
about LibreOffice and ODF; organize a local Virtual LibreOffice

in schools and universities; etc.

TDF BoD will provide a budget bucket for marketing and a budget bucket

[libreoffice-projects] Marketing Plan Discussion on October 8

2020-09-29 Thread Italo Vignoli
The next Marketing Call on

October 8, 2020, at 1PM UTC (3PM CEST),
on https://jitsi.documentfoundation.org/marketing

will be entirely focused on the discussion of the Marketing Plan, using
the last version as starting point (as all previous discussions have
been distilled into that version:

https://nextcloud.documentfoundation.org/s/qPMWRFsxwQ6QFpK

There is also a version with just action items:

https://nextcloud.documentfoundation.org/s/nyX9mLtXFR2kBDD

Agenda of Items to Discuss

1. Objectives of the Marketing Plan
2. LibreOffice Technology ingredient brand
3. Label for LibreOffice provided by TDF
4. Use of LibreOffice Enterprise

If people are not able to attend because the time of the call is not
convenient, please send your questions/comments to the marketing mailing
list (market...@global.libreoffice.org), which will be the place where
the discussion will happen from now on.

To be clear, no discussions on Bugzilla and Redmine, and possibly no
discussions on board-discuss, which would be a perfectly adequate place,
to avoid overlapping of different threads in the same mailing list.

Looking forward to the discussion.

[libreoffice-projects] Anniversary Video

2020-09-27 Thread Italo Vignoli
I have uploaded to YouTube and PeerTube (thanks to Paolo Vecchi) two
videos for LibreOffice 10th Anniversary. They are both in the open WEBM
format.

Video LibreOffice Community 10th Anniversary (7 minutes)
https://youtu.be/aplDorTxdSg
https://peertube.opencloud.lu/videos/watch/3757fabd-ceb0-43ef-b616-8307dacd6b2e

Video LibreOffice 10th Anniversary Social Media (2 minutes)
https://youtu.be/XmH8JkYsOc8
https://peertube.opencloud.lu/videos/watch/dce90813-1b27-4a32-9cbd-856505f3d0a9

For Twitter, there is a MP4 version of the short video available on
Nextcloud: https://nextcloud.documentfoundation.org/s/nZewMktFKH2MLdX.

This is a suggestion for the tweet to support the video:

Today is LibreOffice 10th Anniversary: it is a significant achievement
for the project, and a date to remember for all community members.
@LibreOffice #libreoffice #thebestfossofficesuite

Best regards, Italo

[libreoffice-projects] REMINDER IMPORTANT LibreOffice 10th Anniversary

2020-09-17 Thread Italo Vignoli
I HAVE RECEIVED ONLY THREE PICTURES SO FAR, I THOUGHT THE LIBREOFFICE
ANNIVERSARY WAS AN IMPORTANT MILESTONE FOR OUR COMMUNITY

We were originally supposed to organize some live event to celebrate
LibreOffice 10th Anniversary, but unfortunately the current situation
does not allow us to meet, not even in small groups.

On the other hand, in three weeks from now, on Monday September 28, it
will be exactly 10 years since we announced the LibreOffice project and
The Document Foundation (which was incorporated two years later).

The idea is to put together an animated video of community members
celebrating the 10th anniversary, smiling to the LibreOffice community
and to the FOSS ecosystem at large. You have two full weeks to create a
picture of yourself, where your show how happy and proud you are as a
LibreOffice contributor. Be creative.

Pictures should be sent to my attention by Monday, September 21, at the
latest (sorry, I will not be able to accept later submission, even if
masterpieces), by sending a message to it...@libreoffice.org.

I would like to share the video with community members one day in
advance, on Sunday September 27, to allow everyone to publish the video
on their website (long version) or to share it on social media (short
version).

Looking forward to your awesome contributions. Thanks in advance, Italo

[libreoffice-projects] June Marketing Call

2020-06-24 Thread Italo Vignoli
Tomorrow we will have a marketing call to discuss the marketing plan
shared last week on the board-discuss mailing list at the following
link: https://nextcloud.documentfoundation.org/s/jzryGw7XDkJadmo

The plan - targeted to users of LibreOffice, and not to potential
contributors - is still under discussion in term of strategy, although
in advanced stage. Details will be evaluated once the strategy has been
approved.

The call will start at 3PM CEST (UTC+2), and will be structured as a
question and answer session. We will use TDF Jitsi instance. Link:
https://jisti.documentfoundation.org/marketingcall.

To avoid overburdening the system, please connect using only audio. If
possible, we will activate video at a later stage.

[libreoffice-projects] ODE DevRoom Call for Papers

2019-10-16 Thread Italo Vignoli
FOSDEM is one of the largest gatherings of Free Software contributors in
the world and happens each year in Brussels (Belgium) at the ULB Campus
Solbosch. In 2020, it will be held on Saturday, February 1, and Sunday,
February 2.

The Open Document Editors (OFE) DevRoom is scheduled for Saturday,
February 1, from 10:30AM to 7PM. Physical room has not yet been assigned
by FOSDEM. The shared devroom gives all project in this area a chance to
present ODF related developments and innovations.

We are now inviting proposals for talks about Open Document Editors or
the ODF document format, on topics such as code, extensions,
localization, QA, UX, tools and adoption related cases. This is a unique
opportunity to show new ideas and developments to a wide technical audience.

Length of talks should be limited to a maximum of 20 minutes, as we
would like to have questions after each presentation, and to fit as many
presenters as possible in the schedule. Exceptions must be explicitly
requested and justified. You may be assigned LESS time than you request.
All submissions have to be made in the Pentabarf event planning tool:
https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM20.

While filing your proposal, please provide the title of your talk, a
short abstract (one or two paragraphs), some information about yourself
(name, bio and photo).

To submit your talk, click on “Create Event”, then make sure to select
the “Open Document Editors” devroom as the “Track”. Otherwise your talk
will not be even considered for any devroom at all.

If you already have a Pentabarf account from a previous year, even if
your talk was not accepted, please reuse it. Create an account if, and
only if, you don’t have one from a previous year. If you have any issues
with Pentabarf, please contact ode-devroom-mana...@fosdem.org.

The deadline is Saturday, November 30, 2019. Accepted speakers will be
notified by Sunday, December 8th, 2019. The DevRoom schedule will be
published by Tuesday, December 12, 2019.

Recording permission

The talks in the Open Document Editors DevRoom will be audio and video
recorded, and possibly streamed live too.

In the “Submission notes” field, please indicate that you agree that
your presentation will be licensed under the CC-BY-SA-4.0 or CC-BY-4.0
license and that you agree to have your presentation recorded. For
example: “If my speech is accepted for FOSDEM, I hereby agree to license
all recordings, slides, and other associated materials under the
Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike 4.0 International License.
Sincerely, Name”.

[libreoffice-projects] Call for Papers ODE DevRoom at FOSDEM

2018-12-14 Thread Italo Vignoli
FOSDEM is one of the largest gatherings of Free Software contributors in
the world and takes place each year in Brussels (Belgium) at the ULB
Campus Solbosch. In 2019, it will be held on Saturday February 2, and
Sunday February 3.

The Open Document Editors DevRoom is scheduled for Saturday, February 2
(from 10:30AM to 7:00PM, room UB2.147).

We are inviting proposals for talks about Open Document Editors or the
ODF standard document format, on topics such as code, localization, QA,
UX, tools, extensions and adoption-related cases. Please keep in mind
that product pitches are not allowed at FOSDEM.

The length of talks should be limited to a maximum of 25 minutes, as we
would like to have questions after each presentation, and to fit as many
presenters as possible in the schedule. Exceptions must be explicitly
requested and justified. You may be assigned LESS time than you request.

All submissions have to be made in the Pentabarf event planning tool:
https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM19.

While filing your proposal, please provide the title of your talk, a
short abstract (one or two paragraphs), some information about yourself
(name, bio and photo, but please do remember that your profile might be
already stored in Pentabarf).

To submit your talk, click on “Create Event”, then make sure to select
the “Open Document Editors” devroom as the “Track”. Otherwise, your talk
will not be even considered for any devroom at all.

If you already have a Pentabarf account from a previous year, even if
your talk was not accepted, please reuse it. Create an account if, and
only if, you don’t have one from a previous year. If you have any issues
with Pentabarf, please contact ode-devroom-mana...@fosdem.org.

The deadline is Monday, December 24, 2018. Accepted speakers will be
notified by Thursday, December 27, 2018. The schedule will be published
on Monday, December 31, 2018.

Recording Permission

The talks in the Open Document Editors DevRoom will be recorded (audio
and video).

In the “Submission notes” field, please indicate that you agree to have
your presentation recorded and published under the same license as all
FOSDEM content (CC-BY). For example: “If my speech is accepted for
FOSDEM, I hereby agree to be recorded and to have recordings - including
slides and other presentation related documents - published under the
Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) 4.0 International License.
Sincerely, Name”.

[libreoffice-projects] Marketing Call Minutes

2018-03-07 Thread Italo Vignoli
1. LibreOffice Viewer promo video for Google Play (as mentioned on this
list): what we should include, how long it should be, other ideas

* Make a short video, a summary, that can be extended when new releases
are made (keep the source) -- add "Help us to make it even better!" at
the end with tdf.io/joinus

* Do an animation rather than show the app itself? eg LibreOffice logo
on a desktop PC, then shrinks and jumps into a phone -- "The power of
LibreOffice is now available in your pocket" -- talk to Franklin about
his contact who does 3D animations with Blender and provide a concept
(we should provide some kind of briefing)

* Make a longer video when editing becomes a standard feature?

* AI developers: LibreOffice Viewer only has ownCloud in the storage
settings, even though it supports Nextcloud too (and more?)

2. Stickers: we want to place another order soon, so what do our
marketing communities (especially NLPs) need? Any new ideas?

* AI Mike: Look at Moo in the UK (who do TDF business cards) -- check
their prices for a bulk order of stickers, so we can get bunches of
stickers printed on demand

* What do we want? Regular LibreOffice, DLP, hexagonal (LO 6) -- check
with Jona for the size of the hexagonal stickers (Fedora has them),
smaller stickers for phones, Proud Contributor

* AI Mike: Email different lists (localisation, documentation) asking
what kind of stickers they would like -- open a wiki page

* Try to attract more developers: stickers and posters, like "Hacking in
the front line!" or similar

3. Feedback on the announcement of LibreOffice 6.0

* LibreOffice 6.0 was well received; boost in donations

* More local languages for the announcements would be good --
translators need the PR draft a bit earlier; difficult to plan when
technical comments are still coming in days before the release

* Italo to look at gaps in the calendar (between major and minor
releases), to make other announcements

* LibreOffice 6.0 to be included in the upcoming of Pardus, a Linux
distribution popular in Turkey

4. Upcoming events

* Local conference in Surabaya, Indonesia,à on March 24/25 -- they are a
large community, so it would be good to get them more active in the
global community

* April 7/8: Hamburg hackfest and German community meetup

* AI Mike: do more word-spreading about the hackfest and meeetup

* In May: OSCAL free software conference in Tirana (Albania)

* In June: Open Expo in Madrid, speech and table for LibreOffice to be
confirmed

* In August: Debian conference in Taiwan, with LibreOffice community
meetup (including community members from Korea and Japan), KDE Academy
in Vienna (Austria)

* Turkey: Free Software and Linux days in Istanbul in April (2 days);
end of July is Linux Summer Camp (10 days, includes Linux courses and
trainings)

Some people have added information to the FOSDEM pad, which is related
to 2017, while the updated information for FOSDEM 2018 are on the wiki page:

For instance, the social dinner on Saturday will be in a different
location, and the information about other topics are outdated.

I will sync the wiki and the pad, but in the meantime please add your
name to the wiki (especially for the dinner, as qwe have a maximum
number of participants).

You can download LibreOffice from the website, and install it on your

open source, and is not backed by a company but by a large community of
FOSS advocates.

[libreoffice-projects] [libo-marketing-priv] Marketing/Community Budget 2018

2018-01-06 Thread Italo Vignoli
In order to improve the management of the marketing/community budget for
2018, we ask native language communities to provide the following:

1. A list of objectives you would like to pursue in 2018. Please avoid
wishful thinking, and stick to realistic objectives. A few examples:
organize a meeting with public administrations to educate them about
LibreOffice and ODF; organize a local LibreOffice Conference; reimburse
volunteers travelling around the country to present LibreOffice and ODF
at local events.

2. For each objective, provide a rationale and a sensible amount of
money. Again, we are spending donations money, and we must be extremely
cautious both with requests and with approvals. Requests missing a
rationale or easy to understand details will not be approved.

3. For requests equal or exceeding 1,000 euro, you must provide the
outline of a project, because a large amount of money is probably
covering different expenses (people, suppliers, events) and budget
approvers should be allowed to have a clear picture of what they approve.

Examples of activities which TDF will provide a budget for:

1. community events (aimed at getting face-time for community contributors)

2. marketing activities (aimed at representing the project to the
outside world)

3. targeted projects (for instance, promoting LibreOffice in schools)

In addition, we ask you to provide a list, if any, of infrastructure
related requests, such as - for example - additional computing power or
new services for your native language community.

The idea is to keep the administrative overhead as low as possible, and
have two authorizers responsible for each budget.

TDF BoD will provide a budget bucket for marketing and one for
community. Budget requests will be associated to the relevant budget,
and then approved by budget approvers (according to the availability of
funds).

As a sample, a request could look like this:

##

We'd like to request a 2018 budget of 1000 € for community events and
1500 € for marketing.

Expenses we envision are

1. marketing: attendance at XYZ trade show to show LibreOffice to ABC
user group (700 € booth costs, 300 € for collaterals and 500 € of
travel, totalling to 1500 €),

2. community: a community weekend to discuss tasks and ideas (600 €
hotel, 100 € for snacks and 300 € travel, totalling to 1000 €).

##

Before sending any budget request, please read carefully TDF policies:

Travel: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/TDF/Policies/Travel
Refunding: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/TDF/Policies/Refunding
Community Refunding:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/TDF/Policies/Community_Refunds

Deadline for submissions is January 28, 2018, in order to have amounts
discussed during FOSDEM meetings.

Submission should be sent to treasu...@documentfoundation.org, with a
copy to it...@documentfoundation.org.

Thanks, Italo

Although the HackFest should be focused on development, I think that we
could add a non development related task - for instance, in December we
could focus on the upcoming announcement to start drafting documents -
to increase participation from community members.

Of course, this should not be seen as an "everyone is welcome" message,
but I think it could be important for people who are not skilled devs
but are willing to contribute to the community building side of the
HackFest.

I have sent a comment by email but it looks like it has been ignored:
most conference centers still have 4:3 configurations, so switching to
16:9 would be a problem for all people speaking at conferences (with a
few exceptions). There should be a resizing feature which allows to
switch from 4:3 to 16:9 without changing the aspect ratio of iterms on
the slide (which is what happens today). A large slide with more white
space is not a problem, and is often acceptable, as much as a narrower
slide with less white space. A large slide with all objects stretched
orizontally is not acceptable (and needs a lot of rework).

>+ perhaps make it dependent on the actual screen dimension (Eric)

This should be a must.

Re: [libreoffice-projects] On the communication channels we use

2017-07-31 Thread Italo Vignoli
People already on Telegram are far more than people willing to move to a
different platform like RocketChat (which I have installed, to discover
that nobody was using it).

Telegram groups are used for discussions, and it looks like there is a
majority of people more familiar with Telegram than with other tools
(and this has nothing to do with TDF team, but with the habits of people).

IMHO, we have to reach out to people, and not force them upfront to
switch to what we consider a better option. Once they have started to
contribute, we can ask them to move to our preferred platform, which is
a mailing list (for marketing). This is what happens today.

Marketing coordination happens on the private marketing mailing list,
where people are invited once they show some willingness to help (but
then the reality is that these people are more active on Telegram than
on the mailing list).

I use IRC to communicate with other team members, although I do not like
at all the system (independently from the client, as I have tested them
all, to discover that they are developed by developers for developers,
and not for people with a different background and mindset).

The fact that we respect people willing to use IRC instead of Telegram
is confirmed by bridges which have been created between the two. Bridges
are available for general discussions, QA and design, so for every group
where they are needed.

By the way, if I had to use what my family and friends are using, I
would switch to POTS and text messages, as this is what old people in
industries such as communications and marketing are using (nobody is on
Telegram or Slack, a few are using FB Messenger and even less WhatsApp
and Skype).

Re: [libreoffice-projects] Quick poll about slide format

2017-07-27 Thread Italo Vignoli
Hi Heiko, being a heavy Impress user, and having the majority of my
slides in the Screen 4:3 format (because the majority of projectors in
conference centers is still supporting only the Screen 4:3 format), I
can tell you that a killer feature here would be a format converter from
4:3 to 16:9 which adapts the contents without stretching horizontally
all visuals (something which does not allow a quick conversion).

The ideal situation would be a switch between the two formats which is
triggered by the connection to the external video/projector.

[libreoffice-projects] Minutes of Marketing Call

2017-07-25 Thread Italo Vignoli
1. LibreOffice 5.4 Launch

LibreOffice 5.4 announcement is scheduled for Wednesday, July 26, at 1PM
CEST. Localizations of the press release should be sent to Italo for
distribution. Media pre-briefings have been organized on Monday and
Tuesday, prior to the announcement.

2. Enterprise focused activity (Foad)

Foad is a new member of the community, who has a solid experience in
marketing software to enterprises. He will start a project to interact
with large software vendors such as SAP and SalesForce, to integrate
LibreOffice into their large enterprise software.

3. What about a Telegram marketing group?

Given the success of the Design Group on Telegram, we have created a
LibreOffice Marketing Group to integrate the public marketing mailing
list (which has been rather dormant during the last few months). The
link to subscribe to the group is the following:
https://t.me/LibreOfficeMarketing. As usual, confidential discussions
about marketing strategies and launch activities will continue on the
private marketing mailing list, which is a closed list by invitation.

4. What about a Spanish marketing group?

There is a growing number of people in Spanish speaking countries,
especially in South America, willing to help in promoting LibreOffice in
their geography. It looks like some of these people might have issues in
speaking English, so the idea is to have a Spanish marketing group
(either Telegram or mailing list) where people can discuss in their
native language, with the help of other people who might not be fluent
in Spanish but are willing to help (like Italo, who understands Spanish
but speaks a funny mixture of Italian, Spanish and Portuguese). Comments?

Marketing Call is today, July 17, at 2PM CEST (Berlin time).

We will connect using Jitsi at the following URL: http://meet.jit.si/tdf

technology is offered by Google Chrome, followed by Chromium, while all
other browsers might not work at all).

If Jitsi fails, we will fallback to Google Hangouts.

AGENDA

1. LibreOffice 5.4 Launch
2. Enterprise focused activity (Foad)
3. What about a Telegram marketing group?
4. What about a Spanish marketing group?

[libreoffice-projects] Marketing Call July

2017-07-04 Thread Italo Vignoli
July marketing call will be focused on the announcement of LibreOffice 5.4,
scheduled for the last week of July. We will organize a number of briefings for
the media, to provide advanced information on the new major release.

Materials for localization will be available next week. During the last few
months we have added a substantial number of new journalists in Africa, Asia
and Latam, so localization will be very important.

Agenda for the call will be shared in advance, to allow people to get prepared
and ask questions.

Best, Italo

[libreoffice-projects] Minutes of Marketing Call - June 14, 2017

2017-06-15 Thread Italo Vignoli
Minutes of Marketing Call - June 14, 2017

Attendees: Uwe Altmann, Jona Azizaj (partial), Florian Effenberger
(partial), Sophie Gautier, Marina Latini, Anxhelo Lushka (partial), Mike
Saunders, Martin Srebotniak, Heiko Tietze, Italo Vignoli, Franklin Weng

Agenda

1. Announcement of LibreOffice 5.4

Announcement of LibreOffice 5.4 is scheduled for the last week of July
(potential date: Wednesday, July 26). We have started collecting
information, and while Mike will be working at the new features video,
Italo will be drafting documents for the announcement: press release,
background on new features, white paper about cost of interoperability
(based on interesting findings from the National Institute of Standards
and Technologies of the US Government), white paper about ODF vs OOXML,
and possibly a video about ODF vs OOXML. Materials will be ready in
early July.

2. LibreOffice 6.0: why the change of numbering

After LibreOffice 5.4, we will change development cycle, as we will
launch the LibreOffice 6 family (starting from LibreOffice 6.0 in late
January 2018). The Design Team has started to work on a new branding
concept for LibreOffice 6.0, and we will probably launch a mascot
competition (which is going to be discussed during the next BoD
meeting). Rationale for the change of development cycle will be
discussed at the LibreOffice Conference in Rome.

3. Status of update of TDF slide decks

Italo has just managed a Migration to LibreOffice Workshop in Tirana,
and he has updated most of the shared TDF slide decks. He will upload
the updated slide decks on the wiki during the weekend, including the
first release of the ODF vs OOXML slide deck, which will be finalized in
early August (just before the workshop in Taiwan). During the next few
months, Italo will try to organize a number of webinars or seminars to
bring everyone up to speed on the topic (which is not trivial,
especially if we want to communicate with "normal" end users, who
represent the majority of LibreOffice users also in enterprises).

Questions

- LibreOffice conference and the ODF Plugfest

The technical session of the ODF PlugFest in Rome will be organized on
Tuesday, October 10, the day before the opening session of the
LibreOffice Conference. The presentation session will be organized in
the afternoon of Wednesday, October 11, at the end of the opening
session of the conference.

- Questions about Italy Defence project

The Italian Ministry of Defence has migrated 35,000 desktop out of
100,000. During the process, L2 and L3 support has been provided by the
internal structure of the organization, which is providing the same kind
of services for several applications (as most contents exchanged inside
the organization cannot be shared with any external structure, because
of the peculiar nature of the Ministry of Defence).

- Further updates of the status of UK and Munich City

We do not have any specific updates on the progress made in UK about the
switch to ODF. For sure, the UK government has now other priorities than
in 2014, because of the Brexit discussions with the EU. On the contrary,
the fact that the city of Munich is switching back to MS Windows and MS
Office seems just a matter of time. Unfortunately, the entire FLOSS
ecosystem has managed the situation in the wrong way, as it has
overlooked the importance of communicating the advantages of the switch
to OSS on a daily basis (even when you have a strong political sponsor).
For sure, the city of Munich has been functioning for 12 years - without
any major hiccup - with a FLOSS based infrastructure, which represents
in any case a testament of the viability of FLOSS for large public
administrations. Also, to switch back to MS Windows and MS Office the
city of Munich will spend almost 100 million dollars during the next few
years, with an estimated increase of 75 million dollars over the current
FLOSS infrastructure. This figure does not include hidden security costs
based on the higher vulnerability of MS Windows based systems, as
demonstrated by the recent WannaCry attacks (which have not affected
MacOS and Linux systems).

- Akademy booth

TDF booth at KDE Akademy will be staffed by Gabriele Ponzo and possibly
Xisco Faulì. Italo will put in touch the different people attending the
event.

[libreoffice-projects] IMPORTANT Change of Date of the Rome Conference

2017-05-10 Thread Italo Vignoli
Unfortunately, we have to postpone the conference to October 11 to
October 13 for logistics issues. The rooms confirmed for October 11 to
October 13 are on the Capitoline Hill, and are used by the City of Rome
for official events. They are called Sala dei Protonotari, Piccola Sala
dei Protonotari, and Sala del Carroccio.

On behalf of the organizing committee I apologize for the inconvenience.
The conference website has been updated.

I look forward to meeting the entire community in Italy in October, for
a successful conference.

Best, Italo

IMPORTANT: for any question about the conference, feel free to send me
an email, but do not reply to this message as it is sent to all mailing

Please fill in your availability:

[libreoffice-projects] Marketing Call

2017-03-20 Thread Italo Vignoli
Marketing Conference Call is scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, March 21,
at 1PM UTC. We will connect using TDF Jitsi instance, which is still
under test (the call will be used to get a feedback):

https://vm184.documentfoundation.org/TDFMarketing

Please remember that Jitsi works better with proper WebRTC support,
which is provided by Chromium, while Firefox seems to have issues
(please do not use a proprietary browser).

Agenda for the call will be the following:

1. Report of LibreOffice 5.3 launch
2. Forecast of marketing activities of Native Language Projects
3. Next marketing activities: annual report, month of LibreOffice
4. List of needs for Native Language Projects
