North Korea Unleashes Deadly Strike on South Korea North Korea fired on the South Korean island of Yeonpyeong this morning, setting houses ablaze, prompting evacuations, and killing two marines, reports the BBC. South Korea retaliated, scrambling fighter jets and firing 80 rounds after 200 North Korean artillery shells began falling on the island and surrounding waters near the disputed maritime border between the two countries. South Korea is now on its highest nonwartime alert, while North Korea has yet to comment on the attack. The South Korean strike comes just days after the nation showcased a new uranium enrichment plant, and in the midst of a transition of power from current dictator Kim Jong-il to his son, Kim Jong-un. South Korean officials are investigating whether the artillery fire may have been an accident associated with North Korean naval practice that kicked off on Monday. On Yeonpeyong itself, residents reported that "houses and mountains are on fire and people are evacuating. You can't see very well because of the plumes of smoke." South Korean television YTN reported that artillery fire injured two civilians.
