Re: [PSF-Community] EuroPython 2019: Mobile Conference App available

2019-06-27 Thread David Lord
Given the amount of updates that EuroPython sends out, I can't actually
remember what else this mailing list gets off the top of my head. However,
I didn't sign up for this list expecting to get a constant stream of
updates about EuroPython. From the name and description I'd imagine it
would be more focused on news about the PSF and community efforts with and
around the PSF itself.

It's not that I don't like to know that EuroPython is hard at work, it's
great that you're enthusiastic, but I don't think the level of updates
currently being sent to this list is useful. A few of the most important
updates, such as a CFP or ticket sales seems more appropriate.

I can add a filter that deletes anything with "EuroPython", but that means
I will hear nothing, rather than just important things, and might miss
other PSF-related discussions of EuroPython.

2019-06-27 Thread Mariatta
If you find yourself receiving too many posts from EuroPython, it is quite
simple to filter and automatically archive/delete/mute emails containing
the word "EuroPython".

Perhaps the problem is not with EuroPython posting too many things, but
rather why aren't other members share more "community-type" announcements
here?

If people always have to worry that they'll be criticized as "spamming" it
will deter people from actually posting useful information.

I personally think info about a conference is relevant to the community, so
it is fine to post them here.

Another thing that would be great is if the PSF community page (
https://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/psf-community) can be updated to
include more elaborate guidelines and examples of what posts are acceptable
or not.

2019-06-27 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
James: We do have our own mailing lists as well. The point in posting
here is to address and engage with PSF members specifically, since
many of our attendees are PSF members.

We post announcements since we want to keep people up to date
with what's happening and not miss anything.

As mentioned, I'd love to see more such announcements from other
conferences as well, but many of them unfortunately don't appear to
have the PSF members on their radar.

I'm sorry if our posts come across as spamming. That is certainly
not our attention.

Since we do believe in the PSF community, we also believe that such
announcements should be sent to this group and, personally, I'd love
to see lots more coming from all kinds of Python events, projects,
etc. A community has to be filled with life, lots of opinions,
discussions and buzz.

If the majority believes that this is not what this mailing list
about, I can remove it from the list of MLs we distribute
announcements to.

Re: [PSF-Community] EuroPython 2019: Mobile Conference App available

2019-06-27 Thread Horst Gutmann
Big +1. If the EuroPython messages are perceived as spam then that's
more a testament to the otherwise really low traffic here 🙂 @MAL: Keep
them coming please 🥳

Cheers,
Horst

Re: [PSF-Community] EuroPython 2019: Mobile Conference App available

2019-06-27 Thread Steve Holden
No worries. That's for the PSF to take a view on. I merely commented on my
own experience of the list.

I'm sure you remember many times in the past when what seemed like a great
idea would be floated within the Foundation membership, supported
enthusiastically, then wither and die on the vine.

That's a fairly healthy sign - many new initiatives, most of which are not
expected or required to "succeed" but which will leave ripples in the pond.

Sadly, this one appears to be sinking like a stone.

I suspect this is because many of those who joined don't feel empowered to
post to the list. So the best thing this white male can do is get out of
the way.

Re: [PSF-Community] EuroPython 2019: Mobile Conference App available

2019-06-27 Thread Steve Holden
If the community were more active the EuroPython announcements would be
lost in the noise.

The fact that they are so prominent is really a measure of the channel’s
uselessness. It appears to be little more than window-dresssing: this is
clearly not seen as a channel through which to address “the PSF community”
(whatever that is).
