[PSF-Community] Fwd: EuroPython 2021: Call for Proposals Open

2021-04-26 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
We're happy to announce the EuroPython 2021 Call for Proposals (CFP) and
are accepting proposals for talks, training sessions, workshops, panels,
poster sessions, helpdesks and other interactive sessions at EuroPython
2021.

   * EuroPython 2021 Call for Proposals (CFP) *

  https://ep2021.europython.eu/events/call-for-proposals/

We will leave the CFP open from today until
  Sunday, May 9, 23:59:59 CEST.

To submit a proposal, please log in to the site (or create an account
first) and then proceed to the CFP page:

Topics
--

We're looking for proposals on all aspects of Python from novice to
advanced level, including but not limited to: applications, frameworks,
Data Science, internals or topics which you're excited about, your
experiences with Python and its ecosystem and creative or artistic
things you've done with Python.

EuroPython is a community conference and we're eager to hear about how
you use Python in your professional and personal activities.

Feedback has shown that attendees are interested in advanced topics, we
would like to encourage more submissions with an advanced level scope
for EuroPython 2021. Please also note that we have added back training
and workshop submissions. We had to remove those last year due to lack
of resources.

Speaker Mentoring Program
-

This year we are running a mentoring program to encourage more first
time speakers to submit proposals, as well as provide training on
delivering talks effectively. We are also looking for more mentors to
help with the program.

Please check the CFP page for details on the mentoring program.
https://ep2021.europython.eu/events/call-for-proposals/#Speaker-Mentorship-Program

Quick Summary
-
EuroPython 2021 will be run online from July 26 - August 1:

- Two workshop/training days (July 26 - 27)
- Three conference days (July 28 - 30)
- Two sprint days (July 31 - August 1)

The sessions will be scheduled to ensure they are also accessible for
those in the Asian and Americas time zones.

[PSF-Community] Fwd: EuroPython 2020: Schedule published

2020-05-29 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
We are very excited to announce the first version of our EuroPython
2020 schedule:

 * EuroPython 2020 Schedule *

https://ep2020.europython.eu/schedule/

More sessions than we ever dreamed of
-

After the 2nd CFP, we found that we had so many good talk submissions
that we were able to open a fourth track. Together with the newly
added slots for the Indian / Asian / Pacific and Americas time zones,
we now have a fully packed program, with:

- more than 110 sessions
- more than 110 speakers from around the world
- 4 brilliant keynotes, two of which are already published
- 2 exciting lightning talk blocks
- 4 all-day tracks, with a whole track dedicated to data science topics
- a poster track, which we’ll announce next week
- a virtual social event
- an after party
- and lots of socializing on our conference platform

We are proud to have reached almost the size of our in-person event
with the online version of EuroPython 2020.

Never miss a talk
-

All talks will be made available to the attendees as live Webinars,
with easy switching between tracks, as well as online streams, which
will allow rewinding to watch talks you may have missed during the
day.

Conference Tickets
--

Conference tickets are available on our registration page. We have
simplified and greatly reduced the prices for the EuroPython 2020
online edition:

https://ep2020.europython.eu/registration/buy-tickets/

As always, all proceeds from the conference will go into our grants
budget, which we use to fund financial aid for the next EuroPython
edition, special workshops and other European conferences and
projects:

* EuroPython Society Grants Program *

  https://www.europython-society.org/grants

We hope to see lots of you at the conference in July. Rest assured
that we’ll make this a great event again — even within the limitations
of running the conference online.

Sprints
---

On Saturday and Sunday, we will have sprints/hackathons on a variety
of topics. Registration of sprint topics has already started. If you
would like to run a sprint, please add your sprint topic to the wiki
page we have available for this:

 * EuroPython 2020 Sprints Listing *

 https://wiki.python.org/moin/EuroPython2020/Sprints

If registrations continue as they currently do, we will have a few
hundred people waiting to participate in your sprint projects, so this
is the perfect chance for you to promote your project and find new
contributors.

Participation in the sprints is free, but does require
registration. We will provide the necessary collaboration tools in
form of dedicated Jitsi or Zoom virtual rooms and text channels on our
Discord server.

EuroPython is your conference
-

EuroPython has always been a completely volunteer based effort. The
organizers work hundreds of hours to make the event happen and will
try very hard to create an inspiring and exciting event.

However, we can only provide the setting. You, as our attendees, are
the ones who fill it with life and creativity.

We are very much looking forward to having you at the conference !

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2020: Second call for proposals (CFP) - Going global

2020-05-08 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
After participating in several other online events in Europe, we found
that there is a lot of interest in these events from other time zones
as well. This is a real advantage of running an online event: without
the need to travel, joining an event becomes much easier.

  * EuroPython 2020 Online 2nd CFP *

   https://ep2020.europython.eu/call-for-proposals/

To make it possible for speakers from the Americas and
India/Asia/Pacific regions to give talks at EuroPython 2020 as well,
we have decided to extend the schedule and provide extra slots in the
CEST morning and the evening hours, so that we can have almost 80 talk
slots available, and run a second CFP with specific emphasis on
submissions from outside the central European time zones.

Submitting a talk
-

We will run this second CFP from May 11 until May 24.

To submit a talk, please visit our CFP page on the website. This has
all the necessary details on how to submit a talk.

We would also welcome submissions for helpdesks and posters,
regardless of time zone, since we haven’t received any in the first
CFP.

Results from the first CFP
--

The results from the first CFP will be announced on Sunday (May 10).

[PSF-Community] Sharing our research and licenses for going online with Python events

2020-05-07 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
In March 2020, we had to make a tough decision on whether to cancel
EuroPython 2020 or run it online. Since we did not want to lose
continuity and all the work we had already put into the in-person
event, we decided to go for an online version.

Now, just as many other in-person events, running the online version
required a lot of research, experimentation, gaining knowledge in
using online conference tools and finding a concept which would allow
us to carry over as much of the in-person conference experience to the
online version as possible.

  * EuroPython 2020 Online *

https://ep2020.europython.eu/

This is an on-going effort, but we believe that our existing research
will help other Python events go online as well and want to share this
knowledge with you.

Running Online Conferences
--

The two central documents we have are:

- EuroPython 2020 - Online Conference Tools

This covers research on a lot of different tools available out
there, our experience with them, hints and tips on how to use them
effectively (esp. for Zoom and Discord).

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1OAVtZnxVgmkDGvSV1vEzra7m5Nfjr-81kCrustzxAek/edit#

- EuroPython 2020 - Virtual Conference Concept

Since we had to start afresh with the conference concept, we ran and
still are running a brainstorming phase to come up with ideas and
are now starting to materialize these into a concept, which we’ll
use as basis for running EuroPython this year.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1aGnYM3RlyLFUmdhnykGfgD6gNXJYo8zateu9Re_fdNg/edit#

If you have questions around these documents and their content, feel
free to contact us at helpd...@europython.eu.

Sharing our Zoom Webinar and Pro licenses
-

In addition to sharing our research, we’d also like to share the Zoom
Webinar and Pro licenses we have with other events, where possible. We
have already shared them with:

- PyAmsterdam
- Remote Python Pizza

The only thing we ask is that some of our work group members can
participate in the event as co-host to observe and help, since we need
to train and gain more experience in using these tools. As a bonus, we
can also help with the configuration and share our existing
experience.

If you’re interested in this, please get in contact with us at
helpd...@europython.eu.

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2020: Ticket sales started

2020-04-21 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
We have started the EuroPython 2020 online conference & sprint ticket
sales today.

   * EuroPython 2020 Ticket Sales *

https://ep2020.europython.eu/registration/buy-tickets/

Simplified ticket structure
---

In order to keep things simple for the EuroPython 2020 online version,
we have significantly reduced the ticket prices and refactored the
ticket structure to just two ticket types and two categories:

Conference & sprint tickets
---

The conference & sprint ticket includes admission to the EuroPython
2020 main conference (July 23-24) and sprints days (July 25-26).

 - Business conference ticket: EUR 175.00 incl. 0% Swedish VAT
(for people using Python to make a living)

 - Personal conference ticket: EUR 95.00 incl. 0% Swedish VAT
(for people enjoying Python in their free time or as a freelancer)

Sprint-only tickets
---

Admission to the sprint days (July 25-26) is free of charge, but we
still require you to register and “buy” tickets, since that way we can
send out the conference details using our ticketing system:

 - Business sprint ticket: EUR 0.00 incl. 0% Swedish VAT
(for people using Python to make a living)

 - Personal sprint ticket: EUR 0.00 incl. 0% Swedish VAT
(for people enjoying Python in their free time or as a freelancer)

Full details

Please see our registration page for full details on the available tickets:

https://ep2020.europython.eu/registration/buy-tickets/

As a reminder, here’s the conference structure:

 - Thursday & Friday, July 23 & 24:
Conference talks, keynotes & virtual exhibition

 - Saturday & Sunday, July 25 & 26:
   Sprints

Participate in Talk Voting
--

With conference tickets, you will also be able to participate in the
talk voting which is still available until Sunday, April 26 23:59:59
CEST. Talk voting is your chance to tell us what you’d like to see at
EuroPython 2020.

https://ep2020.europython.eu/events/talk-voting/

Sprints-only tickets are not eligible for talk voting, but if you have
bought a ticket for one of the previous EuroPython conferences, you
can still vote after logging in to the website.

Guido van Rossum Core Developer Grant
-

For Python Core Developers, we have put a special grant in place,
which will allow core developers to get free tickets to the
conference.

If you want to sign up, please check our grant page for details on how
to apply:

https://www.europython-society.org/core-grant

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2020: CFP for the Online Event

2020-04-02 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
Since we had started the CFP under the assumption of running an
in-person conference and are now switching EuroPython 2020 to an
online event, we will extend the CFP for another two weeks until April
12, to give everyone who would like to participate in this new format,
a chance to submit a session proposal.

* EuroPython 2020 Online - Call for Proposal *

   https://ep2020.europython.eu/call-for-proposals/

The online event will have this layout:

- July 23 - 24 (Thursday, Friday): conference days
- July 25 - 26 (Saturday, Sunday): sprint days

Presenting at EuroPython

For the conference days, we are looking for the following session types:

- Talks of 35- or 45-minute duration (including 3-5 minutes for Q&A)
- Posters
- Help desks / Panels / Interactive sessions

We will give out free tickets to the event for all selected speakers.

For posters, we are planning to collect them on a gallery page,
together with PDF versions to read during the event. The speaker will
then be available during the poster session to answer questions and
present more details using screen sharing.

Help desks, panels and interactive sessions will be run using virtual
rooms we’ll make available during the conference days.

We will also have lightning talks for the online event, but those will
be collected closer to the event using a separate form or Google sheet
- similar to how we run this at the in-person conference.

For submitting sprints, please check our sprints page. Note that
unlike the conference days, the sprints day won’t require buying a
ticket.

https://ep2020.europython.eu/events/sprints/

Let’s make this an engaging event for everyone
--

Even though we’re running an online event, our aim is to make the
online event as engaging as possible, so we will provide ways for
direct interaction with the speakers after their talk in separate
virtual rooms and additionally a chat system for asynchronous
interaction.

The conference system will also allow live polls and text or
audio/video based Q&A sessions, so please consider this when preparing
your sessions and add any polls you’d like to run in the submission
notes section (“Additional information for talk reviewers”).

The conference will be held between 09:00 CEST and 20:00 CEST on the
two conference days. We will try to schedule talks based on location
and timezone of the speaker. Please indicate your timezone in
submission notes.

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2020: Online conference from July 23-26

2020-03-31 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
In the last two weeks, we have discussed and investigated concepts
around running this year’s EuroPython conference as an online
conference. We have looked at conference tools, your feedback, drafted
up ideas on what we can do to make the event interesting and what we
can accomplish given our limited resources.

Today, we are happy to announce that we will be running

 * EuroPython 2020 *

from July 23 - 26 2020
   as an online conference

We are planning the following structure:

- 2 conference days with keynotes, talks, lightning talks, poster
  session (Thursday and Friday)

- 2 sprint days with multiple sprint teams (Saturday and Sunday)

Attending the conference days will require a ticket, participating in
the sprint days will be free.

We will publish additional information on the new format as it becomes
available. A few updates for today (more details will follow in
separate blog posts):

Call for Papers (CFP)
-

With the new plan in place, we will extend and retarget the CFP we had
been running in the last three weeks to the online setup.

Please note that we will not have training sessions at EuroPython
2020. We will have keynotes, 30 and 45-minute talks, panels,
interactive sessions, as well as try to come up with a format for
doing posters and lightning talks.

Unlike for our in-person event, speakers will get free tickets to the
event, since we don’t have to cover catering costs.

We need your help
-

Given that we had already put a lot of work into the in-person event
organization, a lot of which we’ll now have to adapt or redo for the
online set up in the few months ahead of us, we will need more help
from the community to make this happen.

If you would like to help, please write to bo...@europython.eu. We are
specifically looking for people with experience using online
conference tools to help host tracks during the conference days.

Sponsoring
--

As for the in-person event, we will have sponsorship packages
available for the online event as well. Because the format is
different, we’ll have to adjust the packages we had intended for the
in-person to an online setup.

If you are interested in sponsoring EuroPython 2020, please write to
sponsor...@europython.eu. We will then send you more details, as they
become available.

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2020: Going virtual / EuroPython 2021: Dublin, Ireland

2020-03-17 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
In our blog post on the COVID-19 last week, we were still hopeful that
the situation would improve in time for the event in July. The last
few days have shown us that we need to have a more realistic view on
how things will develop in the coming months:

https://blog.europython.eu/post/612393987829039104/europython-2020-and-covid-19

Right now, we are at a point in the conference organization where we
have invested a lot of time into the preparation of the conference,
but have not started ticket sales, entered sponsorship agreements or
ordered conference and marketing material.

We also had discussions with the venue and caterer on possible options
to address the risk of not being able to hold the event in July due to
government regulations preventing indoor gatherings.

EuroPython 2021
---

In our EuroPython Society Board call last night, we discussed the
situation, looked at the options and decided to take the offer of the
venue to postpone the in-person conference to next year.

 * EuroPython 2021 will be held in Dublin, Ireland, *
   * from July 26 - August 1 2021 *

How about a virtual EuroPython 2020 ?
-

Since we all love EuroPython, the community and good vibes coming from
such gatherings, we are now considering turning this year’s EuroPython
2020 conference into a virtual event.

For this, we’d like to gather some feedback and have created a form
for you to let us know what your thoughts are on such a virtual setup:

   * EuroPython 2020 going virtual feedback form *

 https://forms.gle/dwMYXVR4RFAqvthP6

If we go for the virtual setup for EuroPython 2020, the dates will
likely change a bit, so ticket sales will start a little later. For
now, we will leave the EuroPython 2020 Call for Proposals (CfP)
open. Please note that those talks will then have to be held from your
notebook/desktop without face-to-face audience contact. On the other
hand, many more people could join in, since there’s no travel
involved. We will aim to make the virtual event as interactive as
possible.

Code name: EuroPython Winter Edition

While we’re at it, we’d also like to use the form to gather some
feedback on the idea to have a winter EuroPython event, one where we
run a BarCamp/Sprint/Hackathon style setup in a smaller setting.

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2020: Call for Proposals now open

2020-03-09 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
We have opened the Call for Proposals today. It will be left open for
three weeks and then close on:

Sunday, March 29 23:59:59 CEST

In order to submit a proposal, please log in to the site (or create an
account first) and then proceed to the CFP page:

 * https://ep2020.europython.eu/call-for-proposals/ *

We’re looking for proposals on every aspect of Python: all levels of
programming from novice to advanced, applications, frameworks, data
science, Python projects, internals or topics which you’re excited
about, your experiences with Python and its ecosystem, creative or
artistic things you’ve done with Python, to name a few.

EuroPython is a community conference and we are eager to hear about
your use of Python.

Since feedback shows that our audience is very interested in advanced
topics, we’d appreciate more entries in this category for EuroPython
2020.

Please help spread word about Call for Proposals to anyone who might
be interested. Thanks.

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2020: Launching the conference website

2020-03-08 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
We are very excited to announce the launch of our website for
EuroPython 2020:

 * EuroPython 2020 Website *

https://ep2020.europython.eu/

Our web WG worked hard on putting the finishing touches on the website
and many other team members helped update the content.

We have ported the accounts from last year to the new website, so you
should be able to login with last year’s details. That said, we’d
recommend changing your password as best practice.

Please note that we have also updated the profile page, so after login
you will be redirected to the profile page to make any necessary
adjustments.

More updates:
-

- The CFP will launch as planned on Monday, March 9th.

- We are also considering to open early bird sales on Wednesday, March
11 at 12:00 CET. However, since we’re still waiting for the VAT ID
registration, we won’t be able to produce invoices yet. Those will
get delivered later when we have the VAT ID - much like in
Edinburgh, where we had similar delays.

- Ticket prices are already available on the registration page. Unlike
in previous years, we are publishing all prices at once, so that you
  can get a better overview.

- As you probably know, the Corona virus has hit Europe and we are
closely monitoring the situation. We will publish separate blog
posts on this topic. So far, we are hopeful that the situation will
  have calmed down by July.

- We have prepared the sponsorship packages and will announce these in
separate blog post. Early bird sponsors will again receive a 10%
discount on the package price. If you’re interested in becoming a
sponsor, please contact our sponsor team at
  sponsor...@europython.eu.

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2020: Pre-launch Website Ready

2020-01-22 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
In the last couple of weeks we have put together a pre-launch site
for EuroPython 2020, which has all the information around the event,
as we currently know and can share with you.

  EuroPython 2020 Pre-launch Website

  * https://ep2020.europython.eu/ *

The main website will go online around early in March and we plan to
also open the CFP and ticket sales around that time. It will use the
same URL, so you can keep this bookmarked.

Some additional updates:

- We have signed the venue agreement, so if you have waited with your
flight and hotel bookings for the final confirmation of the
conference dates, you can now go ahead. Looking at the hotel booking
websites, it’s probably a good idea to book early.

- We will now enter negotiations with the booth builder and finalize
the sponsorship packages. As last year, we’ll again offer an early
bird 10% discount for sponsors who sign up in the first few weeks
after we’ve published the finalized packages on our blog.

Re: [PSF-Community] Python Calendar Team - Volunteers needed

2020-01-22 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
Hello everyone,

if you're interested in helping with adding events to the calendars
please *subscribe* to our ML:

https://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/python-events

I don't have time to do 1-1 introductions to how we operate
the calendars and send emails to everyone who responded, sorry.

I'll wait a couple more days and then ask on the list for
GMail compatible email addresses I can then add to the calendars
and also send an intro to the list.

Thanks,

are now happy to announce the winner:

EuroPython 2020 will be held at the CCD in

Re: [PSF-Community] Introduction (Aditya Bholah)

2019-10-20 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
Hi Aditya,

there are many ways you can start contributing. This could be by
submitting patches, helping update the Python wiki or documentation,
running local user groups or events to attract more people to the
language or even just to connect the ones in your
area which are using Python.

E.g. have a look at this page if you're interested in the latter:
https://wiki.python.org/moin/LocalUserGroups

Re: [PSF-Community] EuroPython 2019: Mobile Conference App available

2019-06-27 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
James: We do have our own mailing lists as well. The point in posting
here is to address and engage with PSF members specifically, since
many of our attendees are PSF members.

We post announcements since we want to keep people up to date
with what's happening and not miss anything.

As mentioned, I'd love to see more such announcements from other
conferences as well, but many of them unfortunately don't appear to
have the PSF members on their radar.

Since we do believe in the PSF community, we also believe that such

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2019: Mobile Conference App available

2019-06-26 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
We are pleased to announce the mobile conference app for EuroPython
2019, again hosted on the Attendify platform:

EuroPython 2019 Conference App

   * https://ep2019.europython.eu/events/conference-app/ *

Engage with the conference and its attendees

The mobile app gives you access to the conference schedule (even
offline), helps you in planing your conference experience (create your
personal schedule with reminders) and provides a rich social
engagement platform for all attendees.

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2019: Beginners’ Day Workshop

2019-06-20 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
If you’re new to Python, you should come to our friendly, welcoming
and helpful Beginners’ Day Workshop. We cater to new Pythonistas of
all levels: from absolute beginners through to experienced programmers
encountering Python for the first time.

* https://ep2019.europython.eu/events/beginners-day/ *

What is Beginners’ Day ?

Beginners’ day welcomes and supports folks who are new to Python
programming. It takes place on Tuesday 9th July, from 9:30 - 16:00 at
the workshop venue, FHNW Campus Muttenz. Just in time to get you ready
for all the talks which follow on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday !
It’s also a great place to make friends with fellow attendees and
figure out how to get the most out of EuroPython.

Bring your laptop, because this will be a hands-on session!

The day will start with workshops to give you the chance to try out
Python in lots of different situations: making a game, creating a
website, programming embedded devices or telling stories with data (in
a Jupyter notebook). Later in the day you’ll have an opportunity to
further explore those aspects of Python which appeal to you with the
support of a team of experienced and helpful mentors. We’ll end the
day with a question and answer session about Python, EuroPython and
the wider Python ecosystem.

The emphasis will be in creating a fun, supportive and useful path
into the Python programming language and its community.

Sign up for Beginners’ Day
--

You will need a conference pass to attend, but otherwise, it’s free,
so if you’re thinking of coming to the conference, but you’re new to
Python or programming, this could be the session for you:

https://ep2019.europython.eu/registration/buy-tickets/

The session will be presented in English (although our mentors will
typically speak a few other languages as well).

If you’d like to come, please do register in advance for this session,
so that we know how to plan to make it the best yet. We need to know
the numbers for planing the workshop.

Sign up for Beginners’ Day here:

Call for Mentors

The workshop is being organised by experienced Python programmer and
educator, Nicholas H.Tollervey.

Already know Python? Do you value working in an open, inclusive and
collaborative way? Want to develop your mentorship skills? Fantastic!

We’re looking for folks with the technical skills, patience, humour
and empathy to work with beginners who may come from a wide variety of
backgrounds and levels of experience. It’s rewarding, fun and a great
way to give back to the community.

We’d especially love to hear from you if you can add an extra language
to help non-English speakers feel comfortable asking questions, or if
you’ve never mentored before and want to try to share your knowledge
for the first time. This is a supportive environment for both beginner
programmers AND beginner mentors. :-)

Please sign up as a mentor on our mentor registration form:

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2019: Community Discounts

2019-06-18 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
The EuroPython Society (EPS) does not only run the EuroPython
conference, but also aims to provide help for the Python community in
Europe in general.

   * https://www.europython-society.org/ *

Let’s all meet at EuroPython

In addition to the Python Organizers Lunch (see previous post), which
focuses on conference organizers, we are also establishing a program
to support attendees of Python user groups and conferences in Europe.

We’d like to invite all of you to EuroPython 2019 this year. Of
course, we cannot give out free tickets to everyone, but we can at
least recognize your participation in the Python community by giving
out discounts for the conference.

  * https://ep2019.europython.eu/ *

Discounts for EuroPython Tickets

If you are running a Python event (conference or user group) in
Europe, please reach out to bo...@europython.eu to request a coupon
code for your group, which you can then pass on to your group members
or attendees.

If you are not running a user group or conference, but a regular
attendee of one, please contact your organizers to have them submit a
request. We can only distribute codes at the user group and conference
organizer level.

The coupon codes are valid for conference tickets bought starting
today and will give you a 10% discount on the ticket price (both
regular and late bird prices). The codes are setup for user group
sizes of between 30-50 members, but we are also extending this to
organizers and attendees of larger conferences. If you need a code
valid for larger groups, please mention this in your email.

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2019: Warning - Spoiler alert!

2019-06-14 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
Usually, we try to have something as surprise for our attendees every
year. However, for this year’s conference, we have decided to give our
attendees something to play with and this needs a little more
preparation than a bottle or a beach towel.

Drum roll… crowd screaming… and here it is: we’re please to
present the...

EuroPython 2019 PewPew Game Console
---

* https://ep2019.europython.eu/events/pewpew-workshops/ *

The device was created and designed by Radomir Dopieralski, a long
time EuroPython regular and enthusiastic Python device and robotics
builder.

The PewPew is a simplified game console, programmable with
CircuitPython, a variant of MicroPython. It comes with a 64 LED
display and a set of small buttons to drive the console.

We will have one device per attendee with training or conference
ticket and plan to give them out together with the badges.

Free Workshops
--

To teach you how to program the consoles and help with any questions
you may have, we have arranged a special workshop room on the training
days Monday and Tuesday, where Radomir and his team will run workshops
focusing on the PewPew. You will learn how to write small programs and
games.

Our hope is that you will take this knowledge home and spread the word
about how much fun Python is – especially for younger users.

The workshops are free for EuroPython conference or training ticket
holders, but please see our notes on catering on the training days.

Help us run the workshops
-

Since Radomir needs help with running the workshops, we are reaching
out to you with this blog post. If you are interested in embedded
Python, hardware hacking, game development and similar topics, we
invite you to come help us running those workshops.

This is a great opportunity to meet with Python developers and learn
together, and we’re sure you will have great fun while helping other
attendees. Whether it’s just lending a hand getting things working, or
running a whole workshop – it’s up to you, either way we will greatly
appreciate your help.

Please sign up using our mentor form. Many thanks !

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2019: Talk Voting is open

2019-05-13 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
Talk voting is your chance to tell us what you’d like to see at
EuroPython 2019. We will leave talk voting open until:

   * Friday, May 17 23:59:59 CEST *

In order to vote, please log in to the website and then navigate to
the talk voting page:

 * https://ep2019.europython.eu/events/talk-voting/ *

How talk voting works
-

The talk voting page lists all submitted proposals, including talks,
trainings and posters. The proposals are sorted in random order.

In order to vote, have a look at the title/abstract and then indicate
your personal interest in attending this session. We have simplified
the voting process and you may choose between these four options:

- must see
- want to see
- maybe
- not interested

The talks you haven’t voted for are marked "no vote". Your votes are
automatically saved to the backend without the need to click on a save
or submit button.

Please note the voting period is a bit shorter this year. We want to
make up some time and release a first selection of accepted proposals
by May 22.

Who can participate ?
-

Any registered attendee of the current EuroPython as well as any
attendee of one of the past EuroPython conferences going back to 2015
can vote. If you have submitted a proposal this year, you are also
eligible to vote.

Talk Selection
--

After the talk voting phase, the EuroPython Program Workgroup (WG)
will use the votes to select the talks and build a schedule.

The talk voting is a good and strong indicator what attendees are
interested to see. Submissions are also selected based on editorial
criteria to e.g. increase diversity, giving a chance to less
mainstream topics as well as avoiding too much of the same topic.

In general, the Program WG will try to give as many speakers a chance
to talk as possible. If speakers have submitted multiple talks, the
one with the highest rating will most likely get selected.

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2019: Call for Proposals

2019-04-25 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
We are happy to announce the Call for Proposals is now open. The CfP
will close on Sunday in two weeks:

   * Sunday, May 12 23:59:59 CEST *

Please submit your proposal via our website:

 * https://ep2019.europython.eu/events/call-for-proposals/ *

We’re looking for proposals on every aspect of Python: programming
from novice to advanced levels, applications and frameworks, or how
you have been involved in introducing Python into your
organization. EuroPython is a community conference and we are eager to
hear about your experience.

Please also forward this Call for Proposals to anyone that you feel
may be interested.

Presenting at EuroPython

We will accept a broad range of presentations, from reports on
academic and commercial projects to tutorials and case studies. As
long as the presentation is interesting and potentially useful to the
Python community, it will be considered for inclusion in the program.

Can you show something new and useful? Can you show the attendees how
to: use a module? Explore a Python language feature? Package an
application? If so, please consider submitting a talk.

PyData EuroPython 2019
--

As usual there will be a PyData track at this year’s
conference. Please submit your papers for the PyData track through the
EuroPython form. Any suitable (i.e. data science, AI and analytics)
submission will be considered for the PyData track.

The PyData track is run in cooperation with NumFocus.

The 2019 PyData track will be on Tuesday (trainings), Wednesday
(talks) and Thursday (talks).

There are six different kinds of contributions that you can present at
EuroPython:

Formats
---

* Talks and trainings should be held in English language only.

* Regular Talk / approx. 110 slots

These are standard “talks with slides”, allocated in slots of

The Q&A session, if present, is included in the time slot. 3-5
Minutes for Q&A is a good practice.

We will only offer a limited number of 60 minute slots, please only
choose these slots for in-depth sessions or topics which require
  more background information.

  - 30 minutes (ca. 50%)
  - 45 minutes (ca. 34%)
  - 60 minutes (ca. 16%)

We are looking for an approx. distribution of expertise (Python or
  domain expertise)

  - 40% Beginners
  - 25% Intermediate
  - 25% Advanced

* Trainings / 16 slots

Deep-dive into a subject with all details. These sessions are
apporx. 3 hours long. The training attendees will be encouraged to
bring a laptop. They should be prepared with less slides and more
source code. Room capacity for the trainings rooms is approx. 100
  seats.

* Panels

A panel is group of three to six experts plus a moderator discussing
a matter in depth, an intensive exchange of (maybe opposite)
opinions. A panel may be 30-60 minutes long. We have introduced this
interactive format for EuroPython 2017 due to the many requests we
have received to make the conference more interactive and have more
challenging / mind-bending content in place. Please note if you
suggest a panel you will have to organise the panelists and
coordinate with the Program WG, panelist will require a ticket to
  the conference.

* Interactive

This is a completely open 60-minute format. Feel free to make your
suggestions. There are only two rules: it must be interactive,
real-time human-to-human-interaction and of course compliant with
  the EuroPython Code of Conduct.

* Posters / 20 slots

Posters are a graphical way to describe a project or a technology,
printed in large formats; posters are exhibited at the conference,
can be read at any time by participants, and can be discussed face
to face with their authors during the poster session.

* Helpdesk / 6 slots

Helpdesks are a great way to share your experience on a technology,
by offering to help people answering their questions and solving
their practical problems. You can run a helpdesk by yourself or with
colleagues and friends. Each helpdesk will be open for 3 hours in
total, 1.5 hours in the morning and 1.5 hours in the
afternoon. People looking for help will sign up for a 30 minute slot
and talk to you. There is no specific preparation needed; you just
need to be proficient in the technology you run the helpdesk for.

* Lightning Talks

A lightning talk (LT) is a short presenatation which must not be
longer than five minute. LTs are not via the CfP but walk-in
  registations, see here.

Community Based Talk Voting
---

Attendees who have bought a ticket in time for the Talk Voting period
gain the right to vote for talks submitted during the Call For
Proposals.

The Program WG will also set aside a number of slots which they will
then select based on other criteria to e.g. increase diversity or give
a chance to less mainstream topics.

Conference Layout

[PSF-Community] EPS: Announcing the Guido van Rossum Core Developer Grant

2019-01-31 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
At the last General Assembly of the EuroPython Society (EPS) at
EuroPython 2018 in Edinburgh, we voted on a new grant program we want
to put in place for future EuroPython conferences.

We all love Python and this is one of the main reasons we are putting
on EuroPython year after year, serving the "cast of thousands" which
support Python. But we also believe it is important to give something
back to the main team of developers who have contributed lots of their
time and energy to make Python happen: the Python Core Developers.

This group is small, works countless hours, often in their free time
and often close to burnout due to not enough new core developers
joining the team.

Free Tickets for Python Core Developers
---

To help with growing the team, putting it more into the spotlight and
give them a place to meet, demonstrate their work and a stage to
invite new developers, we decided to give Python Core Developers free
entry to future EuroPython conferences, starting with EuroPython 2019
in Basel, Switzerland

In recognition of Guido’s almost 20 years of leading this team, and
with his permission, we have named the grant “Guido van Rossum Core
Developer Grant”.

Details of the grant program are available on our core grant page:

https://www.europython-society.org/core-grant

PS: If you are a core developer and want to organize a workshop,
language summit or similar event at EuroPython 2019, please get in
touch with our program workgroup (prog...@europython.eu) soon, so that
we can arrange rooms, slots, etc.

PPS: If you want to become a core developer, please have a look at the
Python Dev Guide:

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2019: RFP for Venues

2018-09-28 Thread M.-A. Lemburg

Many thanks to everyone who had submitted contact details and venue
suggestions after our call.

We have tried to include all of them in the list of direct recipients.

Feel free to forward the blog post to additional suitable venues.

Many thanks,

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2019: Seeking venues

2018-09-24 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
Dear EuroPython'istas,

We are in preparations of our venue RFP for the EuroPython 2019
edition and are asking for your help in finding the right locations
for us to choose from.

If you know of a larger venue - hotel or conference center - that can
accommodate at least 1400 attendees, please send the venue details to
bo...@europython.eu. We will then make sure to include them in our RFP
once we send it out.

The more venues we gather to reach out to, the better of a selection
process we can guarantee, which in return, will ultimately result in a
better conference experience for everybody involved.

When sending us venue suggestions, please make sure to provide us with
the following: name and URL of the venue, country and city, as well as
the contact details of the sales person in charge of inquiries (full
name, email and phone).

We were planning to start the RFP process in the coming days, so
please make sure you send us your recommendations as soon as possible.

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2018: Schedule available

2018-07-03 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
Over the last few weeks, our program WG has been working hard on
getting the schedule all lined up. Today, we’re releasing it to the
Python world.

 Schedule for EuroPython 2018

 * https://ep2018.europython.eu/en/events/schedule/ *

With 140 speakers and more than 150 sessions, we have a full packed
program waiting for you. Please note that the schedule may still
change in details, but the overall layout is fixed now.

Book your EuroPython 2018 Ticket

Please make sure you book your ticket in the coming days. We will
switch to late bird rates closer to the event.

If you want to attend the training sessions, please buy a training
pass. We only have very few left and will close sales for these later
this week.

Travel & accommodation tips
---

Since we’re close the conference and The Fringe is starting a week
later, Edinburgh is in high demand. If you’re having problems finding
a hotel, please also consider searching for apartments on the well
known booking sites.

For traveling to Edinburgh, we suggest also considering a combination
of plane and train or bus. London, Birmingham and Manchester all
provide train and bus lines going to Edinburgh and by booking a
combination, you can often save a lot, compared to a direct flight to
Edinburgh.

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2018: Inviting European Python Conference Organizers

2018-07-01 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
The EuroPython Society (EPS), who is organizing the EuroPython
conference, last year extended it’s mission to also provide help for
the Python community in Europe in general.

As part of this, we would like to get to know, and help create closer
ties between organizers of other European Python events.

Organizers’ Lunch
-

We would like to invite representatives of all European Python
conference to EuroPython 2018 to join us for an organizers’
lunch. We’re planing the lunch for Friday, July 27, in the organizer’s
room (Soutra Suite).

Our aim is to get to know each other, exchange experience in
organizing events and to find out how we, as EPS, can most effectively
help other conferences going forward.

Free Tickets

To support and facilitate this, we are giving out one free conference
ticket per conference team, so that each team can send a
representative to the organizers’ lunch.

If your team wants to send someone to join, please write to
bo...@europython.eu, mentioning the conference you’re organizing and
some background on your team.

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2018: Community Discounts

2018-07-01 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
The EuroPython Society (EPS) extended its mission last year to not
only run the EuroPython conference, but also provide help for the
Python community in Europe in general.

Let’s all meet at EuroPython

In addition to the Python Organizers Lunch (see previous post), which
focuses on conference organizers, we are also establishing a program
to support attendees of Python user groups and conferences in Europe.

We’d like to invite all of you to EuroPython 2018 this year. Of
course, we cannot give out free tickets to everyone, but we can at
least recognize your participation in the Python community by giving
out discounts for the conference.

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2018: Beginners’ Day Workshop

2018-06-29 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
Maybe you’ve come to EuroPython as a programmer from another language.

Or perhaps you have other tech skills or you really want to understand
what it’s like to program in Python.

Then come to our Beginners’ Day at EuroPython.
https://ep2018.europython.eu/en/events/beginners-day/

What is Beginners’ Day ?

Beginners’ Day is a session we are running, just for newcomers to the
Python programming language, on Tuesday, July 24th from 09:30 - 16:45,
at the Edinburgh International Conference Center (EICC), the
EuroPython 2018 venue, and just in time to get you ready for all the
talks which follow on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

You will need a conference pass to attend, but otherwise, it’s free,
so if you’re thinking of coming to the conference, but you’re new to
Python or programming, this could be the session for you.

The workshop will be run by:
- Vincent D. Warmerdam (PyData Amsterdam)
- Christian Barra (EuroPython board member)

Sign up for Beginners’ Day
--

Whether you’re totally new to programming or you already know another
language - this full day session will give you a crash-course in
Python, and the ecosystem around it. You’ll get the context you need
to get the most out of the rest of the EuroPython conference.

Bring your laptop, because this will be a hands-on session!

This session will be presented in English (although a few of the
coaches do speak basic Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese).

Please see the Beginners’ Day page for the full program:

https://ep2018.europython.eu/en/events/beginners-day/

If you’d like to come, please do register in advance for this session,
so that we know how to plan to make it the best yet. We need to know
the numbers for planing the workshop.

Call for Mentors

Already know Python ? Want to be a mentor ? Fantastic !

Especially if you can add an extra language to help non-English
speakers feel comfortable asking questions, or if you’ve never
mentored before and want to try to share your knowledge for the first
time.

Please sign up as a mentor on our mentor registration form:

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2018: Invoices available

2018-06-29 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
We have great news ! After many months of sorting the UK VAT
registration issue, we have finally been registered for VAT in the
UK. This is the number, we’ve all been waiting for:

 GB 297620469

We’ve now generated all the missing invoices for existing purchases
and hope that this will make it easier for companies to now register
their employees as well.

EuroPython 2018: Get your tickets before we sell out
  https://ep2018.europython.eu/en/registration/buy-tickets/

Downloading Invoices

If you have already purchased tickets, you can find the invoices in
your account. Simply log in, go to the profile page, select “Orders,
invoices & coupons” on the right and you should find the invoice links
for your orders.

The invoices are generated as PDFs, so you can print or archive them
easily.

Sorry for keeping you waiting so long.

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2018: Training pass sale starts on Friday at 12:00 CEST

2018-06-07 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
As we have already announced, access to trainings is not included in
our regular conference tickets this year. We have done this to keep
the conference ticket prices reasonable, acknowledge the value in the
trainings are and to add more flexibility.

Two full days of trainings included
---

Training passes allow you to access all trainings on the two training
days, Monday and Tuesday. Each training will run for 3 hours and they
will be scheduled in 3 parallel tracks.

Please note: Training access is on a first-come-first-served basis. We
don’t provide registration for specific training sessions.

A light lunch is served on the training days, which is included in the
training pass price.

* Business training pass: EUR 295.00 excl. VAT, EUR 354.00 incl. 20%
UK VAT (for people using Python to make a living)

* Personal training pass: EUR 175.00 incl. 20% UK VAT (for people
  enjoying Python from home)

* Student training pass: EUR 125.00 incl. 20% UK VAT (only available
for pupils, students and postdoctoral researchers; please bring your
student card or declaration from University, stating your
affiliation, starting and end dates of your contract)

The trainings pass does not grant you permission to attend the main
EuroPython conference days or the sprints. Please get a separate
conference ticket for this.

Available training sessions
---

We have already selected an initial set of trainings, you can view on
our session list:

  https://ep2018.europython.eu/en/events/sessions/#Training-sessions

We will also have a few sponsored trainings, which are free (you don’t
need a training pass to attend these). These will be announced in a
separate blog post.

Only a limited number of training passes available
--

Since we don’t want to overbook the trainings sessions, we have
limited the number of training passes to 200.

Training pass sales will start on Friday, June 6, at around 12:00
CEST (that’s 10:00 UTC, 11:00 BST, 13:00 EEST, etc.).

Given the experience with the early bird tickets, which sold out in
less than 45 minutes, we recommend to get your ticket as soon as you
can.

Regular conference tickets are selling out much faster than last year
as well, so the same recommendation applies to those as well:

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2018: Looking for a photographer

2018-06-04 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
At last year’s event, we had a professional conference photographer,
Alessia Peviani, from our community, help us cover the event in
pictures.

  https://ep2017.europython.eu/en/europython/photos/

This year she unfortunately cannot attend, so we’re looking for help
from other photographers in the community.

Here’s what we can offer:
-

* recognition and publicity by listing you as the official EuroPython
  conference photographer

* free tickets for the conference and trainings

* refund for travel and accommodation up to EUR 500

* gratitude by our attendees who really appreciate having this kind of
  documentation available

What we are asking for:
---

* cover all aspects of the conference in photos

* photos licensed under the CC BY-NC license, with a special exception
for the EPS, so that we can use the photos for promoting the
  conference

* self-management and help with administering the Flickr group,
uploads by other community photographers and discussions

If you are interested in helping us, please write to me...@europython.eu.

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2018: Early Bird Ticket Sales

2018-05-30 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
We are happy to announce that we’ll start early bird tickets on

   Thursday, at around 12:00 CEST.

We have 200 conference tickets available at the Early Bird rate and
they usually sell out within a day or two.

Invoices will be available in a few weeks
-

Since we’re running the conference in the UK this year and conference
tickets are taxed at the location of the conference, we have to charge
and pay 20% UK VAT on the tickets.

In order to do this, we need a UK VAT registration and associated VAT
ID. Unfortunately, this whole process has taken way too long and so
we’re starting ticket sales without issuing invoices at this time,
simply because we would not be able to issue valid VAT invoices.

We will issues these as soon as we have the UK VAT ID, which should be
within the next couple of weeks if all goes well.

We’ll announce this on the blog and you will then be able to download
the invoices in your website account.

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2018: Talk voting is open

2018-05-25 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
At EuroPython, we let our attendees have a significant say in the
selection of the sessions which are presented at the conference. We
call this “talk voting” - attendees can tell us which submitted talks
they’d like to see at the conference.

To be eligible to vote for talks, you need to be a submitter of talks
and everyone who attended one of the previous year’s EuroPython
conferences.

Since we’re a bit short on time, talk voting
will only be possible for a few days,
until Sunday, May 27.

How talk voting works
-

Please log in and proceed to the page
https://ep2018.europython.eu/en/speakers/talk-voting/ to vote for
talks.

The talk voting page lists all submitted proposals, including talks,
trainings and posters.

At the top of the page you find a few filters you can use to narrow
down the list by e.g. selecting tags you’re interested in or only show
one type of proposal and also to select the sorting order.

For each submission, you can find the talk title with a link to the
talk page.

In order to vote, have a look at the title/abstract and then indicate
your personal interest in attending this session. We have simplified
the voting process and you may chose between these four options: “must
see”, “want to see”, “maybe” and “not interested”. Please ignore the
option “not voted” - it’s an alias for “not interested”.

If you have questions about the talk, you can go to the talk page and
enter a comment.

Note that your votes are automatically saved to the backend without
the need to click on a save or submit button.

Talk selection
--

After the talk voting phase, the EuroPython Program Workgroup (WG)
will use the votes to select the talks and build a schedule.

The majority of the talks will be chosen based on the talk voting
results. Part of the available slots will be directly assigned by the
Program WG based on editorial criteria to e.g. increase diversity or
give a chance to less mainstream topics.

In general, the Program WG will try to give as many speakers a chance
to talk as possible. If speakers have submitted multiple talks, the
one with the highest rate will most likely get selected.

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2018: Call for Proposals closes on Sunday

2018-05-19 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
We would like to remind you that our two week call for proposals (CFP)
closes on Sunday, May 20.

If you’d like to submit a talk, please see our CFP announcement for
details:

https://blog.europython.eu/post/173666124852/europython-2018-call-for-proposals-cfp-is-open

Submissions are possibe via the CFP page on the EuroPython 2018
website:

https://ep2018.europython.eu/en/call-for-proposals/

We’d like to invite everyone to submit proposals for talks, trainings,
panels, etc. Looking at the submission counts, we are especially
looking for more trainings submissions (note that you get a free
conference ticket and training pass as trainer of a selected
training).

Submissions will then go into a talk voting phase where EuroPython
attendees of previous years can vote on the submissions. The program
work group will then use these votes as basis for the final talk
selection and scheduling.

We expect to have the schedule available by end of May.

Please help us spread this reminder by sharing it on your social

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2018: Ticket Sales Update

2018-05-09 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
Some community members have been wondering why tickets are not
available yet. We’d like to update you on the current status.

EuroPython is run by the EuroPython Society located in
Sweden. However, the conference being held in the UK, we have to
charge UK VAT for the tickets we sell and submit the collected VAT to
the UK tax authorities. In order to be able to do this, we have
register with the UK tax authorities and this is where we have
experienced unforseen delays.

After several attempts at getting this sorted, our friends at PyCon UK
have helped us find a capable accountant with whom we are currently
implementing the registration. Hopefully, the tax authorities won’t
take too long to issue us a UK VAT ID. As soon as we have it, we will
start ticket sales.

Ticket Prices Available
---

That said, we do already have some more information for you: we have
decided on the initial ticket prices for EuroPython 2018. In case you
need budget approval from your employer, you may put in your request
now.

Please see our blog post or registration page for full details on the
ticket pricing:

extension, please submit your proposals as early as possible - also to
reduce work load of the reviewers. Thank you.

Presenting at EuroPython

We will accept a broad range of presentations, from reports on
academic and commercial projects to tutorials and case studies. As
long as the presentation is interesting and potentially useful to the
Python community, it will be considered for inclusion in the program.

application? If so, please consider submitting a talk.

Submission types

* Regular Talk / approx. 110 slots
* Trainings / 12 slots.
* Panels
* Interactive
* Posters / 15 slots
* Helpdesk / 6 slots

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2018: Hotel tips and general update

2018-03-08 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
As you may know, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival is starting one week
after EuroPython 2018 in Edinburgh. Since this typically attracts many
thousands of people and artists, the hotels are filling up quickly in
Edinburgh.

If you’re planning to attend EuroPython, please book your hotel
early. Many booking sites offer free cancellations, so there’s no risk
in making reservations now, even if you decide not to come in the end.

Room allocation for EuroPython 2018
---

To help with this, we have partnered with the Edinburgh Convention
Bureau to set aside a number of hotel rooms which are reserved for
EuroPython attendees. These rooms will be held reserved until a few
weeks before the conference and are also available with a free
cancellation option.

The Edinburgh Convention Bureau has setup the following website for
booking rooms from this allocation:

* EuroPython 2018 Hotel Booking Website *
https://cabsedinburgh.eventsair.com/QuickEventWebsitePortal/europython-2018/home-page
(run by the Edinburgh Convention Bureau)

Update on EuroPython 2018
-

Meanwhile, we wanted to give you an update of where we are with the
conference organization:

We are still working on getting everything setup for launching the
website, opening ticket sales and the Call for Proposals (CFP).

This year the EuroPython Society (EPS) will be running the ticket
sales, rather than a local organization and we are facing some
challenges related to VAT taxes, which are taking longer to sort out
than expected.

This is the main reason for the delay you are seeing, but we’re
getting there.

Enjoy,

[PSF-Community] Looking for new maintainer for PSF European Conference Kit

2017-07-21 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
Hello all,

Together with Armin, I created the first three conference kits
for the PSF to use at conferences:

https://wiki.python.org/psf/PSF%20Conference%20Kit

in 2012 and managed the European kit for the past five years,
sending it around Europe to various conferences such as FOSDEM,
EuroPython and a few regional ones:

https://wiki.python.org/psf/PSF%20Conference%20Kit#A2012-2017

After five years, I'd like to pass on this role to someone
else, ideally someone from Germany as well, since Germany
seems to have really low parcel sending fees compared to most
other European countries (outgoing usually costs EUR 30-40;
sending back along the same route typically at least EUR 100).

If you're interested in taking this role, please let me know
and I can set things up.

Thanks,

2017-06-08 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
We are happy to announce the schedule for EuroPython 2017 in Rimini,

all the sessions in the last few weeks.

With over 200 sessions, over 180 speakers, one day for workshops, 5
days of talks, training, keynotes, lightning talks, posters, help
desks and open spaces, followed by 2 days of sprints, EuroPython will
be one of the most exciting and vibrant Python events this year:

 * EuroPython 2017 Schedule *

   https://ep2017.europython.eu/p3/schedule/ep2017/

The schedule is available in table and list format. Please note that
we are still applying small changes to the slots where necessary.

Many thanks to everyone who submitted proposals. EuroPython wouldn’t
be possible without our speakers !

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2017: Talk voting is open

2017-05-01 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
At EuroPython, we let our attendees have a significant say in the
selection of the sessions which are presented at the conference.

We call this "talk voting" - attendees can tell us which submitted
talks they’d like to see at the conference.

To be eligible to vote for talks, you need to be a registered attendee
of the current EuroPython, or attendee of the past two EuroPython
conferences.

How talk voting works
-

Please log in and proceed to

 * https://ep2017.europython.eu/en/speakers/talk-voting/

to vote for talks.

We have simplified
the voting process and you may chose between these four options:
- must see
- want to see
- maybe
- not interested

Interested in attending EuroPython? Entry tickets are now on sale and

*** Buy your EuroPython ticket ***

  https://ep2017.europython.eu/en/registration/buy-tickets/

Tickets for EuroPython will be sold in three phases:

First, we’ll have a short early-bird ticket phase, where we’ll sell
tickets at a very low rate. Only 200 tickets will be available for
this rate, so be quick. It usually takes just a few days for them to
sell out.

We’ll then switch to the regular rates, and closer to the conference,
to the on-desk rates.

You can get tickets for the whole week, if you don’t want to miss
anything, or buy day passes at the on-desk rates in July to attend
only one or two days.

We further offer three different rates: ‘students’ (including PhD and
postdoc researchers), ‘personal’ and ‘business’ passes (for
companies). Speakers and trainers will benefit of special discounts.
See Call for Proposals for further details:

Twitter feed @PythonEvents to get immediate updates whenever a new
event is added. Please see our wiki page for details:

   https://wiki.python.org/moin/PythonEventsCalendar

The calendars are open to the world-wide Python community, so you
can have local user group events, as well as regional and
international conference events added to the calendars.

NEWS

Looking back, the calendars have proven to be a great tool
for the Python community to connect, with more than 250 conferences
and more than a hundred of user group events listed since 2012.

We would therefore like to encourage everyone to submit their
2017 events, so that the Python community can get a better overview
over what's happening in Python land.

ADDING EVENTS

Please see the instructions at

https://wiki.python.org/moin/PythonEventsCalendar#Submitting_an_Event

for details on how to submit an event. We've made it really easy for
you: just need to send an email to our team address using the email
template we provide for this. Thanks.

MORE INFORMATION

More information on the calendars, the URLs, feed links, IDs, embedding,
etc. is available on the wiki:

[PSF-Community] Farewell to Rob Collins

2016-11-16 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
We would like to share with you the sad news, that Rob Collins has
passed away earlier this month, on November 2nd, after a short but
intense illness.

Many of you may know Rob from the sponsored massage sessions he
regularly ran at EuroPython in recent years and which he continued to
develop, taking them from a single man setup (single threaded process)
to a group of people setup by giving workshops (multiprocessing) and
later on by passing on his skills to more leaders (removing the GIL)
to spread wellness and kindness throughout our conference series:

https://ep2015.europython.eu/conference/talks/sponsored-massage-training-in-aid-of-the-python-software-foundation

His massages regularly raised more than a thousand dollars which were
donated to the Python Software Foundation (PSF) to do even more good.

Rob also gave a lot of thoughtful talks at the EuroPython conferences,
always very cheerful, full of humor and many good insights. Here’s a
selection:

 * EuroPython 2015: DumbDev – eight rules for dumb development
   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEOI8y0qHMk

 * EuroPython 2015: Lightning Talk announcing the Python Massage
   Foundation
   https://youtu.be/WmvTfUYJ2Bw?t=1539

 * EuroPython 2013: TDM Test Driven Madness
   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nj4nwh_VrPM

 * EuroPython 2012: An introduction to his neck and and shoulder
   massages
   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itn8W9zI0Wk

 * EuroPython 2011: Pricing products using Python graphs and sets
   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TN9nIBxDXU8

Rob was a true Pythonista from the heart. He will always be remembered
for his humor, great spirit and kindness.

You were such a cheerful person. We will miss you, Rob.

Thank you for all the inspiration,

Re: [PSF-Community] PSF Fellow Nomination Process & Fellow Working Group

2016-11-04 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
Thank you for driving this, Ewa.

While you are making changes to the bylaws regarding Fellows,
please also consider that we reintroduce the possibility of
Fellows to convert from emeritus status back to Fellow status
without having to go through the whole process again, as we
had in the V1 bylaws (section 4.8 - see
http://legacy.python.org/psf/bylaws/).

Thanks.

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2016: EPS and PSF sessions

2016-07-20 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
We would like to draw your attention to the following sessions by the
EuroPython Society and the Python Software Foundation, two of our
Python community organizations working for you.

EuroPython Society Sessions
---

The EuroPython Society (EPS) is organizing the EuroPython conference
series and working with the EuroPython Workgroups, including the
on-site team, to run EuroPython conferences.

Each year, we are running our General Assembly at the conference,
reporting on our activities and, probably more interesting for many of
you, a session to introduce the organization concepts we’re using to
run these conferences.

 * EPS General Assembly
   Thursday, July 21, 14:30, Room A2

 * EuroPython 2017 - Help us build the next edition !
   Thursday, July 21, 14:00, Room A2

Both sessions are open to all EuroPython attendees.

If you’d like to help us with the organization, please attend the
EuroPython 2017 session. You can also become a member of the EPS and
then vote at the General Assembly.

Python Software Foundation Session
--

The Python Software Foundation (PSF) is the organization behind Python
itself. It holds the IP rights, runs PyCon US and tries to help the
Python community world-wide to run events, user groups, workshops or
Python related programming projects by giving out grants.

This year, we’re again having a PSF Members meeting at EuroPython,
where the PSF reports on its activities, new plans and organizational
changes.

 * PSF Members Meeting
   Wednesday, July 20, 15:45, Room A2

The meeting is open to everyone, so if you want to learn more about the
PSF activities, please join in.

Re: [PSF-Community] EuroPython 2016: Hot Topics Call for Proposals is Open !

2016-06-06 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
I asked about the student house rooms and we still have a few
of those available. People can directly talk to the Colegio
Mayor Deusto and make reservations there.

For finaid we have a waiting list, so it's
unlikely that we'd be able to take on additional requests,
even if some of the initial recipients decide not to take
advantage of the finaid grants.

I can ask whether we still have the really affordable student

[PSF-Community] EuroPython 2016: Hot Topics Call for Proposals is Open !

2016-06-05 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
We are happy to announce that we’ve opened our second Call for
Proposals. This call is limited to hot topics and most recent
developments in software and technology and will run until June 12.

   *** Proposal Submission Page ***

   https://ep2016.europython.eu/en/speakers/hot-topics-cfp/

Why is there a second call ?

Planning a big conference is a challenge: On one hand people like to
know what will be on our talk schedule to make up their mind and make
travel arrangements early. On the other hand technology is progressing
at enormous speed these days.

So we have given this some thought and decided to split the Call for
Proposals in two phases, with the second just weeks before the
conference.

Submit your hot topic talk
--

This CFP is reserved for:

 * hot topics
 * emerging technologies
 * brand new developments in software & hardware
 * recent results in research and science

Some suggestions for topics:

 * Exciting new hardware & Internet of Things
 * Robotics
 * Virtual Reality
 * AI & Deep Learning

The second call will be open for nine days only:

Saturday June 4th 0:00 to Sunday June 12th 24:00 CEST.

The program work group will then select the most exciting and
intriguing submissions and will notify the winners on short notice.

Submit your poster or run a help desk
-

Since we still have a few slots left, we are also looking for more
posters and help desks - these are not limited to hot topics.

Get a ticket discount
-

For talks, posters, help desks we will give out a 25% discount coupon
valid for one conference ticket.

Only historical reasons. Up until a few months ago, the PSF wiki
was only accessible to PSF members, so the second link was not
public. We subsequently changed the default on the
PSF wiki to readable by everyone (see attached email).

Dear Members,

I have now implemented the changes listed below. If you find pages
which should not be open to the general public or ones which should
be, please let me know.

Many PSF wiki pages will now be word readable and editable by
all PSF members with an account. As per the resolution, only
PSF voting members will get an account (it's easy to become voting
member though; see
http://pyfound.blogspot.de/2015/02/enroll-as-psf-voting-member.html).

Please see the front page for additional details:

I don't think there's a general purpose answer for this,
except maybe: ask the chair(s) of the WGs ...

Thank you for explaining your concern in more detail. This makes
it easier to understand why you think we should have put this
up for a members vote.

Please note that most of the PSF's funding is generated not
through direct PSF sponsors, but instead through profit generated
via running the PyCon US conference. Those sources of funding have
(so far) never been subject to membership approval, not even
board approval. The PyCon US chair is responsible for those
selections.

If you have concerns about which sources of funding the
PSF uses, please sign up for the sponsors WG to help with the
decision process and policies.

If you believe we should do a members vote on this, you
can raise this on the psf-vote list. If there's enough demand,
I doubt that the coming board will reject the wish to
run a members vote on the topic.

All that said, oversight over the funding of the PSF is
one of the main responsibilities of the board and even if the
sponsor selection is delegated to a WG, the board remains
ultimately responsible for any decisions in this direction.

Some background:

The main reason members had to vote on sponsors under the
version 1 bylaws was that sponsors gained voting rights. Otherwise,
the board would have been able to take on this decision process
by itself and relief the members from this duty (the board has
in most cases done pre-screening of the candidates all along).

Under the version 2 bylaws, anyone can self certify
as voting member, so while sponsors now no longer have
voting rights, they can still have employees, engaging in
Python community work, gain voting rights. In the end,
removing the sponsor membership class is not really a
practical loss.

Cheers,

As Ewa mentioned: We did have a discussion on the psf-vote list,
where all voting members are subscribed, prior to implementing
the change.

Does that answer your question ?

If not, perhaps you could explain what you believe should have
been done and wasn't.

Changes to bylaws are usually implemented by the board. They can
also be put up to vote with the voting members and for larger changes,
the board will generally take that approach.

In this particular case, this wasn't deemed necessary, as the
change only affects the existing sponsor members and there was no
opposition on the psf-vote list, nor from the sponsor members
themselves.

We did consult the existing sponsor members before implementing
the change. None of them opposed the move.

As I mentioned in the email, the main purpose is to simplify
sponsor signup. Sponsors will no longer have to wait for the
next members vote to sign up, we don't have to run extra votes
every time we have a few signups and the decision to accept
sponsors is moved into a WG which is much easier to get involved
in as PSF member than having to run for board.

Overall, the PSF is moving more and more in the direction of
trying to engage our members in the operations of the PSF.
We're doing this by opening up WGs with targeted scope and
so far, it's working well:

[PSF-Community] Sponsor Members - Bylaws Revision

2016-05-25 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
Dear PSF Members,

the board has just approved an amendment of the PSF bylaws to
remove the sponsor membership category. From now on, we will
just have sponsors and no longer need to vote them in, hopefully
making it much easier to sign up new sponsors. The next step is
creating a sponsors WG to take over sponsor management.

Here's the official resolution:

- RESOLVED, that the Python Software Foundation amend the PSF bylaws to
remove the Sponsor Membership category. All changes made by the
   Bylaws WG are listed here:

https://bitbucket.org/malemburg/psf-bylaws/diff/bylaws.md?diff1=ba846896778b&diff2=fa6ce90a3f1376b2708bf76d87c70813f96e010a&at=default.
Approved 11-0-0 via email vote 25 May 2016

and these are the updated bylaws:

https://www.python.org/psf/bylaws/?20160525

(the parameter is just a trick to bypass the cache :-))
