Many thanks, that's really helpful. A couple of notes in case it helps
anyone. To get that to work, on this system at least, you need to disable the
Mission Control Shortcut keystrokes, even though it looked as though they were
set to shift up and down arrows.
While exploring, I found that you can also change the gain of the selection
with the mouse-wheel while holding down control and shift. That might just
prove useful.

Hi Peter,
While the clip is selected, press control-shift-up arrow or down arrow to
adjust the gain. The amount of each adjustment is set in the preferences.
Remember, you don’t have to separate the clip first, just make a selection in
the edit window and make your adjustments.
