Hello Ramie, for the most part, you will always have at least one track selected. If you are having a problem with wanting to have a track unselected then creat a new track that you don't need to use and that track will automaticly be selected. With the Shift R command to arm a track, that track needs to be selected in the track table. With you not hearing the last track you recorded when playing back a new track you recorded, you may have left the first track armed and then armed a new track so you are recording over the first track.
