Nice!

We do not use a triple store any more - all important data is kept in a RDB.

That's an interesting technical choice... could you tell a bit more why you
did the switch?

*There is an increasing amount of data sets being made available online
through an increasing amount of data portals. Just like the Web, this vast
amount can be exploited in two ways: search and exploration. The main
difference is that searching consists in finding specific data sets
matching a given set of criterion while exploring relates to the
opportunistic hopping from dataset to dataset following interesting links.
 Whereas the former can deal with isolated data silos, the later relies a
lot on the presence of links across datasets and the portals. When such
links are established we move from scarce data sharing to the creation of a
global interconnected knowledge space that can be easily browsed for
information.*

*In this one day workshop we will discuss, and experiment with, the
practicalities of data exploration through interconnected data source. We

centralized and very powerful solutions centered (and depending on …)
around Web hosted servers and (mobile) clients accessing it. As a
direct consequence of that, the usage of Linked Data depends on the
availability of a Web infrastructure compassing data-centers, high
speed reliable Internet connection and modern client devices. If any
of this is missing, our community is not able, yet, to provide any
Linked Data enabled data management solution. Still, the digital
divide that is currently widely recognized separates the world into
those who have access to Web-based platforms and those who don’t.

persons who don’t have access to Internet but would benefit from being
able to use Linked Data.We should keep everyone in mind when we design
Linked Data platforms and aim at helping to reduce this digital

This workshop, organised around an morning of presentations and an
hacking afternoon, as for objective to discuss the steps to take to
lower the requirements for deploying Semantic Web technologies. For
instance, making Semantic Web platforms usable under limited computing
power and limited access to Internet. During the hacking session, a
specific focus will be put on the usage of Semantic Web technology for
educational software.

= Topics =
Topics of the workshop include, but are not limited to:
* Off-line linked data synchronisation
* Low resource demanding triple stores

 Why should it not be as easy to deploy to 'The Web'

  Great point!

A cool idea indeed!

 A webby application store driven by the likes of GoodRelations, FOAF
 Profiles, SIOC data spaces, WebID ACLs, and Payswarm is something that's
 missing re. poweful Linked Data showcase outside the realms of dataset
 publishing. Imagine if developers could produce Linked Data apps for
 desktops, notebooks, tables, and phones that were easy to discover,
 courtesy of the kind of serendipity inherent in Web-scale Linked Data
 meshes. Basically, you end up with something as simple as:

 Developer Activity:

 1. write app
 2. describe app -- using something as simple as a turtle document
 3. deploy app to a Web location -- e.g., dropbox or an ftp location
 4. ACL protect access to the app via WebID
 5. use WebID watermarked X.509 certificate as the license file which
 enforces terms of use

+1

 6. announce app via a Tweet, G+, Facebook, LinkedIn post.

Could we just replace that by announce to the Web as well?
using a distributed social networking platform featuring the same standard
goodness and openness as the rest of the Web ;-)

Hi all,

That may or may not really fit into the discussion, but here is a small
write up about the commercial benefits of doing 5 star data instead of 3:
http://wp.me/p1ffiZ-7D

It is not a new idea but some data owners I spoke with did not see it that
way, thinking that Linked Open Data implies giving away all the data for
free.
This post relates what I explained to them, hope this makes sense. And if
it doesn't, I'd be pleased to discuss it :-)

CALL FOR PAPERS

1st International Workshop on Artificial Intelligence meets the Web of Data
(AImWD-2012)
co-located with European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI-2012)
( http://sites.google.com/site/aimwd12/ )

--
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
--

The Linked Data initiative aims at improving data publication on the Web,
thereby creating a
Web of Data: an interconnected, distributed, global data space. The Web of
Data enables
people to share structured data on the Web as easily as they can currently
share documents on
the Web of Documents (WWW). The basic assumption behind the Web of Data is
that the
value and usefulness of data increases with the amount of interlinking with
other data. The
emerging Web of Data includes datasets as extensive and diverse as DBpedia,
Flickr, and
DBLP. A tip of the iceberg representation of its content is behind
maintained at http://lodcloud.net
The availability of this global data space creates new opportunities for
the exploitation of
Artificial Intelligence techniques in relation with knowledge
representation, information
extraction, information integration, and intelligent agents. Two approaches
can emerge: (i)
using AI techniques to address the problems the Web of Data faces or, (ii)
using the design
principles of the Web of Data to improve knowledge representation within AI
techniques.
The workshop aims at bringing together researchers and practitioners
working on the Web of
Data and/or Artificial Intelligence to discuss the union of these two
research areas. Several
core challenges, such as the interconnection of heterogeneous datasets, the
provenance of the
information and trust issues will be at the centre of the discussion. With
this workshop, our
goal is to contribute to the birth of a community having a shared interest
around publishing
data on the Web and exploring it using AI technologies â or the inverse,
developing and
improving AI technologies which use tools from the Web of Data.

Missing results on DBPedia end point

2010-09-26 Thread Christophe Guéret

 Hello,

There seems to be an issue with the SPARQL end point of DBPedia,
http://dbpedia.org/sparql.

When I run this first query:

   SELECT ?result WHERE {http://dbpedia.org/resource/WVNS-DT2
   http://dbpedia.org/resource/WVNS-DT2
   http://dbpedia.org/ontology/formationDate
   http://dbpedia.org/ontology/formationDate  ?result. }

I get the following result telling me that ?result is a date:

   sparql xmlns=http://www.w3.org/2005/sparql-results#;
   xmlns:xsi=http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance;
   xsi:schemaLocation=http://www.w3.org/2001/sw/DataAccess/rf1/result2.xsd;
   head
   variable name=result/
   /head
   results distinct=false ordered=true
   result
   binding name=resultliteral

datatype=http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#date;2006-09-13/literal/binding
   /result
   /results
   /sparql

But when I want to find a resource which matches that specific date, no
result are returned:

   SELECT ?result WHERE { ?result
   http://dbpedia.org/ontology/formationDate
   2006-09-13^^http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#date. }

gives

   sparql xmlns=http://www.w3.org/2005/sparql-results#;
   xmlns:xsi=http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance;
   xsi:schemaLocation=http://www.w3.org/2001/sw/DataAccess/rf1/result2.xsd;
   head
   variable name=result/
   /head
   results distinct=false ordered=true
   /results
   /sparql

Could this be a bug of some sort? I also tried to run the same couple of
queries on http://lod.openlinksw.com/sparql and everything works fine there.

Re: Next version of the LOD cloud diagram. Please provide input, so that your dataset is included.

2010-09-03 Thread Christophe Guéret

 Hi Ted,

But please ... this time, will there be any effort to make visible
the clustering within the LOD Cloud? This seems to me one of the
best ways to encourage data set publishers to link out -- and that
*is* important to grow the utility of the *overall* data set.

To date, the only graphic I've seen which shows just how little
overall interconnectedness there is (was) in the LOD Cloud is my
own ... which someone has long since removed from display on the
EWC wiki page with the Cloud-like graphic, and which is certainly
well outdated, but which is still found here --

http://virtuoso.openlinksw.com/images/dbpedia-lod-cloud.html

As for the clustering, you can also have a look at the picture we
plotted with a network analysis tool: http://blog.larkc.eu/?p=1941

Our network file that we created out of the data on the ESW wiki
will also be outdated as soon as the new picture is completed.
I'll make a new version of it with the data on:
http://www4.wiwiss.fu-berlin.de/lodcloud/
With such a file, everyone will be able to plot its own cloud picture
and highlight the different structures he wants to see in it.

Re: Please stop massive crawling against http://openean.kaufkauf.net/id/

2010-06-08 Thread Christophe Guéret

Dear Martin,

I guess the VUA crawler was our. The deficient process has been stopped
now and won't be restarted before being checked for bugs.

Sorry about all the problems caused.

Best regards,
Christophe

 Dear all:

 The volunteer who is hosting http://openean.kaufkauf.net/id/, a huge
 set of GoodRelations product model data, is experiencing a problematic
 amount of traffic from unidentified crawlers located in Ireland
 (DERI?), the Netherlands (VUA?), and the USA.

 The crawling has been so intense that he had to temporarily block all
 traffic to this dataset.

 In case you are operating any kind of Semantic Web crawlers that tried
 to access this dataset, please

 1. check your crawler for bugs that create excessive traffic (e.g. by
 redundant requests),
 2. identify your crawler agent properly in the HTTP header, indicating
 a contact person, and
 3. implement some bandwidth throttling technique that limits the
 bandwidth consumption on a single host to a moderate amount.

 Note that the full dataset is always up to date in the LOD SPARQL
 endpoint at

 http://lod.openlinksw.com/sparql

 Thus, there is rarely a need to crawl the complete dataset.

 Thanks for your consideration.

 Best wishes

 Martin Hepp

Brilliant! I submitted it now to Sindice [1] and 'registered' the org prefix
in prefix.cc [2] - you might want to support it by voting it up ;)

Cheers,

Nice. I've added it to CKAN: http://www.ckan.net/package/org_ontology

Cheers,

ISWC'09 2nd International workshop on Nature inspired Reasoning for the Semantic Web (NatuReS)

2009-08-01 Thread Christophe Guéret
Apologies for multiple copies due to cross-postings.

   CALL FOR PAPERS

The second International Workshop on

   Nature inspired Reasoning for the Semantic Web
  (NatuResS09)
  http://natures.few.vu.nl/2009

October 26, 2009
@ 8th international Semantic Web Conference (ISWC 2009), Washington, DC

BRIEF DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES

The Semantic Web (SW) carries out the vision of a Web of data usable for both
human and machines. This web, consisting of inter-connected instance data
annotated with possibly expressive ontologies, promises a huge opportunity for
Web-based applications in many domains. In this web the vision of distributed
reasoning has replaced the myth of a commonly agreed upon ontology every data
provider would rely on.

However, existing reasoning techniques often fail to this live up to this
distributed vision of knowledge on the web. Reasoner may not be able to cope
with the high number of instances and/or the expressiveness of the ontologies
describing them (scalability problem) or fail to deal with a sometimes
unreliable
network, lack of maintenance of information or the variety in quality
(robustness problem).

The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers from the Semantic Web
community with more Nature inspired communities, such as the people interested
in Computational Intelligence (CI), Neural Networks and to discuss on current
trends in Semantic Web. The workshop will feature invited talks from experts in
the corresponding areas as well as contributed talks presenting
submitted papers.

TOPICS OF INTEREST

We encourage the submission of papers investigating the use of nature inspired
techniques to address knowledge representation and reasoning problems. Those
problems includes (but are not restricted to) the following topics :
 * Data storage and retrieval: how to efficiently create and manage a
repository
 of potentially billions of (RDF) triples.
 * Data integration: how to find correspondences among the different ontologies
 (alignments).
 * Complex reasoning: how to find implicit information efficiently in large,
 expressive, or distributed ontologies.
The suggested keywords are
 * Neural Networks
 * Evolutionary computing (EA and others)
 * Swarm intelligence (Ants, PSO, flocking birds)
 * Potential field methods
 * Simulated annealing
 * Artificial immune systems
 * Epidemic protocols (Gossiping)
 * Ontology alignment
 * Reasoning
 * Distributed Knowledge Management System
 * Peer data management system (PDMS)
 * Complex systems
 * Data integration
 * Semantic Web
 * RDF
