With Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 PulseAudio 0.9.21 runs pretty well playing sound
smoothly over my WLAN-attached AirportExpress (AE) devices. Thanks a lot
 for this nice work!

However after startup the AE is only detected when manually performing a
network-reset. In addition, if WLAN-connection skips temporarily the AE
may get "lost" and is not available until the network was disconnected and
 re-connected again (using GNOME network-manager).

I'm not sure on what additional information you need, so please ask.

Pulseaudio 0.9.21 streams very well over an attached AirportExpress in
Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 am64. However the streams have a quite long delay of 3
to 6 seconds thus making them unsuitable for video.

Interestingly, volume control from PA/Gnome-Applet reacts immediately as
expected but volume controls from applications have the same 3 to 6 s
 delay.

It would be very nice to have this delay solved in one of the following
 milestones (if possible).

Comment(by coling):

Yeah this is a known limitation of the driving code just now.

Volume changes are passed over a control channel to the device so are
acted on immediately even if the device has a full buffer.

If the app in question is clever, it passes on the volume changes to lower
down the stack the change will be immediate but if it attenuates the data
it's sending out it will have the delay.

I'll be fixing this at some point when I rewrite the timing code. Just
finding it hard to find the time for that as it's a rather complex
 process.

Comment(by coling):

Does unloading and reloading the module-raop-detect module work? You can
do this by loading paprefs and then unticking and reticking the
 appropriate ticky box.

If this works then I can only surmise that this related to PA process
being started before avahi at login. This is totally possible. I'm not
sure if we need to idle and reconnect to avahi or whether the system
should guarentee avahi is available at login... h.

Nope. Paprefs won't do the job, sorry. However when disconnecting from
network and reconnecting immediately the AE-sink becomes available...

Comment:

In that case this is almost certainly avahi related in some capacity. I
have seen people mention the same problem with native PA auto-discovery
too. Lennart may have some ideas?

all the apps I tested are not ;-)

Good to hear, that you have the issue in mind - gives us a little chance
for the future. As for now I'm so happy that it works at all that I can
live well with the delay. Fortunately the volume control works fine even
 when using media keys.

ACK. Ping to my ''Airport.local'' is responsive only after a network
reset. Do you have any ideas for a workaround to make things as easy as
 possible?
